Hey everyone,
I have a Lenovo Legion Y540 with an Intel i5 9th gen and GTX 1650. It's around 6 years old, and recently it stopped turning on completely.
I took it to an authorised Lenovo service centre first. They told me the motherboard was dead and needed to be replaced, which would cost around ₹25–30k. They also said that manufacturing of this motherboard has been discontinued.
After that, I took it to a local repair shop. Initially, they said the motherboard was mostly fine and suspected a faulty IC. They quoted around ₹7,800 for the repair.
They spent 3–4 days trying to fix it, but unfortunately, they couldn't get it working. They said the Intel CPU was okay, but another Intel chipset was showing 0.00 V. Eventually, they also concluded that it couldn't be repaired.
Here are a few things I've noticed:
- Pressing the power button does absolutely nothing. No lights, no fans, nothing.
- The charging indicator used to work intermittently, but now it doesn't turn on at all.
- Interestingly, I can still charge my phone using the laptop's battery while the laptop itself is switched off. (Always on usb port)
- The DC charging jack was replaced around 5 months ago, and it worked normally for months after that.
I'm confused about the chipset diagnosis. If the Intel chipset is dead or not receiving power, could the USB port still charge my phone from the laptop battery?
Does the 0.00 V reading necessarily mean the chipset itself is dead, or could a power-management circuit or another motherboard component be responsible?
I was charged ₹909 for diagnosis at Lenovo and ₹250 at the local shop. I haven't gone ahead with the ₹25–30k motherboard replacement.
I'd appreciate any advice from people familiar with motherboard-level laptop repairs. Is there any realistic possibility of repairing this, or should I accept that it's gone?
Thanks!
