iPad Air 13-inch vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S12+ for heavy reading and studying
I'm looking to buy a tablet primarily for studying, reading case studies, ebooks, and academic papers, with the ability to highlight text, annotate PDFs, and occasionally take notes directly on documents.
I currently own a reMarkable 2 and a reMarkable Paper Pro. While I enjoy using them for handwritten notes, their relatively slow refresh rates make navigating long documents and ebooks frustrating. I'm looking for a more responsive device that would make reading and studying more efficient.
I'm considering the 13-inch iPad Air and Samsung's Galaxy Tab S series. I use a Samsung S25 Ultra, so a Samsung tablet seems like the natural choice, especially given the familiarity and potential integration with my phone. However, I've read that the iPad's 4:3 aspect ratio is better suited to reading documents, whereas Samsung's wider 16:10 displays are more geared towards media consumption.
I've never used an iPad or been deeply involved in the Apple ecosystem, but I'm open to switching if it offers a genuinely better experience for my needs.
I'd love to hear from people who use their tablets extensively for reading and studying:
- Reading experience: How do the iPad Air 13-inch and Samsung Galaxy Tab S series compare for reading ebooks, academic papers, and lengthy case studies?
- PDFs and annotations: Which offers the better experience for highlighting, annotating, underlining, and taking notes directly on documents?
- Display and aspect ratio: Does the iPad's 4:3 aspect ratio make a meaningful difference when reading PDFs and ebooks, or is the difference overstated?
- Apps and workflow: Which platform has better apps for managing and reading PDFs, ebooks, and study materials? I'd also appreciate recommendations for specific apps.
- Performance and usability: How important are refresh rate, scrolling smoothness, and screen responsiveness for this kind of use?
- Ecosystem: Given that I use a Samsung S25 Ultra, would I lose anything significant by switching to an iPad, or would a Samsung tablet be the more practical choice?
My primary use case is heavy reading and studying, with occasional note-taking and document annotation. Watching videos and general entertainment are secondary considerations.
I'm new to buying conventional tablets, so I'd particularly appreciate advice from people who have used either device for serious reading and studying rather than just general browsing and media consumption.
Which tablet would you recommend for my use case, and why?
