I noticed 2 days ago the hinge is protruding. Didn’t think much of it but it seems to have gotten a tiny bit worse. Either way I spoke to Apple Support who asked me a bunch of irrelevant questions like “do I use it in a case? How do I hold the device?” Etc.
They gave me 2 options, go to the store and get a replacement (confirmed that they may or may not have stock and they don’t know). Option 2, an AppleCare + claim for $99 and obviously the full amount held on my card. I asked why this is the case it’s not accidental damage and he had no idea just said that’s a good point. I’m not paying $99 more to get a device that possibly might have the same issue. Makes no sense.

Such a great device but crippled. I usually don’t care and these things don’t bother me a whole lot, but spending $2k to wait for it to break or pay $99 more for a replacement with no fix guaranteed is a wild experience.

To those claiming it’s a small handful of devices don’t forget it’s literally week one of release and there are a good amount of issues. We still have many many more people waiting for their devices to deliver.

Update: The retail store told me to bring it back if/when the display cracks as it’s “cosmetic” at the moment. Waste of time I’ll be returning it.

Am I the only one who prefers this color over Star White? I was about to get the white one, but I ended up going with Night Sky.

I got lucky the day after release at my local Apple Store—got the last one that day and canceled my preorder. This was before I saw all the posts about issues with some units. The more I saw those, the more nervous I got. I had a day where I was almost ready to return it and grab an 18 Pro Max instead, but then I realized I’ve wanted a foldable for years and specifically wanted it to be an Apple product. I finally got one, so I didn’t want to let the early reports scare me off.
I have AppleCare+ and the regular warranty, so I’m not overly worried. Five days in and going strong: no issues, no bumps, no cracks. I fold and unfold it all day with no problems.

As a former heavy 17 Pro Max and iPad mini user, this just made a lot of sense to me. The outer screen handles the quick stuff fine and the inner screen is nice for the things I used to pull out the mini for.

Anyone else who almost returned theirs over the early reports? How’s yours holding up?

Have owned the phone since release day, seen all the other issues people have been having with the hinge. (So far no hinge issues)

I was using my phone to see some YT while cooking my second steak ever. The phone was probably ~2 feet away from the pan.

After finishing, I noticed there was ~5 tiny tiny specs of grease on the inner screen. I tried wiping it with my hand and noticed it “smeared”, after trying a bit more forcefully I noticed that those parts of the screen felt smooth, almost as if the grease ate through or peeled those parts.

Worst part is if I try to rub those areas it continues expanding.

Will probably take to apple to get opinion, but found it weird that if it was the grease, apple didn’t think people would put their grimes hands while eating?

Edit 1: I have tried isopropyl alcohol with a microfiber towel, and although it cleared it a bit, the spots in the pictures remain, I can feel the matte to smooth change when I slide my finger

TL;DR:Me cook steak, tiny grease spots hit phone screen, me wipe, screen coating go bye-bye and spots get bigger.
Me confused why expensive phone no survive greasy fingers.

Had the opportunity to use a medical grade Xray today and had to take a peek at the internals of the Duo.

Finally secured! Waited in line at Apple Alderwood Mall and they had the 1tb Nightsky I wanted. Can’t wait to use it and gather my thoughts on it, but it feels good in the hand

Many posts on this sub have reached a level of intensity I haven’t seen in a long time. Scrutinizing every speck, bump, or ridge on your phone and developing severe anxiety about potential failure won’t alter anything.

The reality is that nearly every device will be fine. Cracked screens affect only a minority of iPhone Duo owners; I’d estimate fewer than 1% experience this issue.

Hopefully you bought Apple Care, but even without it, Apple will replace a defective phone. You won’t lose thousands of dollars, and most will face only a day or two of inconvenience before receiving a replacement. Each day your phone stays intact increases the chance of same-day stock at the Apple Store.

Enjoy your phone and stop worrying about every detail. If it cracks, it cracks, and Apple will fix it—yet you’re draining the joy from a phenomenal, fun device by obsessing over minor concerns, most of which are likely imaginary.

Just a reminder that if you miss the Action Button on the non-fold iPhone you can change your lock screen buttons to whatever you like.

I have one of mine set to Silent Mode for quickly putting my phone in silent without opening the main display.

I fell in love with this device. Don’t listen to the haters. If you’re thinking about it, go get it.
Playing need for speed underground 2 in full screen mode makes it a gaming console for me.

update: Apple Store is replacing it when they get stock in

Was able to snatch one at the Washington Square store near Portland after following a notification from iphonestockchecker yesterday. Completed the process, from the notification to the payment, in 25 seconds. Canceled my delivery order after I physically held the box in my hands. 200 miles of driving, totally worth it 🥲

And no issues here! Saw a comment on another post here that the silent majority with no problems are enjoying their Duos and I have to agree.

My Duo fell out of my pocket while riding my bike today. It had an Apple case on it, but when it hit the ground, the front portion of the case popped off. The phone must have bounced and landed face down because there are some pretty significant scuffs along the left edge of the front display and some damage around the hinge area.
Thankfully, the screen and glass are completely intact, and the phone is still fully functional. But I couldn’t be more upset, especially since I was already debating whether to keep it or return it before the 14-day return window expires. I also have AppleCare+, but I’m not sure what my options are since the damage is cosmetic. Pretty frustrating that Apple’s own case didn’t do a better job protecting it.

I created this for myself on Saturday (24/10), and managed to pick up a phone in store on Tuesday (27/10, yesterday). Sharing it now in case it helps somebody else.

It covers Apple Store pickup only, not carriers. The biggest restocks this week have been in the morning (7 - 8am), with sporadic restocks throughout the day. All of the data so far is on the page.

Once in stock they go very quickly, typically within a minute or two. So once a notification comes through you'll have to be rapid on the checkout.

On iPhone, notifications only work once the page has been added to your Home Screen from Safari itself, not from a browser inside another app. The steps are on the page.

This was a quick personal project so none of the bells and whistles (personalised notifications, etc.) offered by some paid services, but no sign-up either. I'll keep it live for at least the next three weeks.

Noticed this zit coming from the hinge area. Now I am being told I should take the phone in. Just made a reservation on Halloween but this doesn’t seem promising.

I've used a couple of apps on the front screen but no one comes close to youtube.

Only had my iPhone Duo for 4 days with light use and this is already happening. Apple is replacing it for free with AppleCare, but without it, I’d be looking at a repair bill this high. Definitely disappointed, but I’m glad Apple stepped up and recognized the issue.
