Disturbing content A train crash in Spain killed 68 people and cut off the entire railway today. Air Europa responded by charging €426 for a 1-hour domestic round trip.
Today, a high-speed train collision in Urda completely severed the main rail corridor connecting Madrid with Andalusia. This is the primary route linking the capital to the entire southern region, leaving tens of thousands of passengers completely stranded with zero trains running for the next couple of days.
Instead of capping fares or offering emergency relief, Air Europa skyrocketed prices across flights heading to these affected destinations.
To make matters worse, people on Twitter/X are already reporting that their existing flights got canceled with little explanation, and when they went online to rebook, they were met with these exact inflated prices.
I checked last-minute tickets for tomorrow, returning the day after. A standard 1-hour flight between Madrid and Málaga that usually goes for €70 to €100 for a round trip is currently sitting at €426.
I get that automated dynamic pricing exists, but letting algorithms cash in on people desperately trying to get home or reach family during a national tragedy is just sickening.
