中国生活 | Life in China Do you think Chinese government OVERREACTED to Mbappe's answer during interview about his favorite meme?

Mbappe was asked what's his favorite Meme on internet. He answered his favorite and funniest meme is his face on Mao Zedong's head.

But apparently this interview got backlash in China. Specifically it angered Chinese Government — CCP. So they decided to ban La Liga in China and broke all commercial contracts between Chinese companies and Kylian.

Later Kylian apologized saying he didn't mean to insult China and Chinese people.

Do you think Chinese government got kinda too sensitive and overreacted? Or you side with Chinese government instead?

国际关系 | Intl Relations China congratulates Brazil’s Lula on reelection

Context:

  1. Beijing congratulates Brazil's Lula on his successful reelection and wishes him continued achievements in Brazil's national development under his leadership.
  2. Beijing is ready and will be using this opportunity to further promote a "China-Brazil community with a shared future".
  3. Lula defeated Far Right Flavio Bolsonaro in Sunday's runoff to win a fourth non-consecutive term as president.
  4. In the mean time, Bolsonaro has fled the country and has refused to concede the loss of the elections. When asked about Bolsonaro's refusal to concede, Beijing replied "that they will respect the choice of the Brazilian people".

Additional Context:

  1. Lula's win doesn't not mean that Brazil has aligned completely with China nor America, his victory rally was that “We are no one’s backyard!”
  2. Meanwhile China has been Brazil's top trading partner since 2009 with Brazil's exporting 3x more to China than to USA. The US has tried in the meantime to pressure China to swap Brazilian Farm goods for American Farm goods.
  3. While it is clear what stance China has taken to Brazil's elections, it is unclear how the US will react to Lula's win, whether the Americans will respect Brazil's democratic elections or not. Trump has previously declared that he likes Lula but would have preferred Bolsonaro.
  4. However Brazilian and American diplomatic relations may soon become complicated as
    1. After F. Bolsonaro has refused to concede his loss, he was asked to surrender his passport due to a pending investigation into a previous financial crime.
    2. F. Bolsonaro has taken his family and smuggled themselves to Argentina, where they then flew to the USA.
    3. The Trump administration has unusually fast tracked a visa for the South American immigrant Bolsonaro family. According to the timeline of events, a family visa was issued in less than 24 hours for the Bolsonaro. It is unlikely that ICE will question their arrival.
  5. Brazil currently has not issued an extradition request for Flavio as he is not being charged for anything just that he is part of an investigation.

新闻 | News China's first AI-generated film to get a theatrical release flops at the box office

Chinese audiences may be happy to let AI generate their microdramas—but a fully AI-generated feature film may be a step too far.

China’s first AI-generated feature to release in cinemas, the sci-fi thriller Sanxingdui: Future Past, flopped at the Chinese box office. The movie, produced by Bona Film Group, tells the story of an archaeologist who must save the future world enslaved by AI, according to Chinese state media. It only managed to generate an estimated $180,000 through Monday, according to ticketing platform Maoyan. The film had a budget of $1.5 million, according to AFP.

Jiang Defu, the company’s chief operating officer, acknowledged the film’s lukewarm reception in an interview with Chinese film outlet Yuli. Still, he argued Sanxingdui was an important experiment. “We are the first to try it, the first to get a theatrical release permit, and the first to be tested by the audience,” he said. “I think that is not easy at all.”

Social media reactions to the film have been mixed. “China’s first AI movie totally traumatized me,” wrote one user on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media platform similar to Instagram. Another user was more positive: “My biggest takeaway? AI movies are super low-cost and let you tell stories with complete freedom.”

咨询 | Seeking Advice (Serious) Worried about seeing a dermatologist in China

I’m studying in China, and I’m currently in my final year at university.
I had unprotected sex with a girl, including oral sex. About two days later, I noticed a bumps in the area between my testicles and anus, where hair grows. I’m really scared that it could be an STI, although I know there could be other explanations.
I want to visit a dermatologist at a hospital to get it checked, but I’m extremely worried about my situation as an international student. I’m afraid that if I test positive for an STI, it could affect my student status, scholarship, or even lead to deportation. I’m in my final year, and I really don’t want to risk everything I’ve worked for.

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Xian from Pakistan and would love to meet some local and international people here. I’m 34M and interested in making friends, exploring the city, discovering good food spots, and learning more about life in Xi’an.
If you’re living in Xi’an too, feel free to say hello! 😊

Culture Creativity?

Post image

Google just resurfaced this photo from over 10 years ago. A picture from a "colouring book" my kids were given. Where an "example" picture is supplied. This is not how colouring books work in the west, in my experience. You colour it however you want. How about your childhood? A rule based culture starts early?

问题 | General Question (Serious) What are your opinions on Mao Zedong?

After the recent Mbappe-Mao Zedong incident (where Mbappe called Mao Zedong a dictator, then China banned the steaming of LaLiga - the league where Mbappe plays in - from China, I saw many people (none from China) say that China is overreacting, etc.

My honest opinion was that I respect the Chinese position on the matter, as u have self respect and don’t tolerate hearing those claims abt ur leader, ever more so when it comes from the best football player itw.

But all the reactions I got is that he is bad, he killed many Chinese people, etc.

I find it weird that non-Chinese people are accusing him of being bad because of the famine he caused (among other reasons), while the Chinese government is defending his name and legacy.

If he really was bad, the Chinese people and government should be the top hatters for him, not defending him.

So I wanna hear ur side of the story, as Chinese people living in china.
Not the governments position (as Ik that Mao Zedong co-founded ur ruling party), and not the opinion of outsiders.
