Politics Why are there so many excuses on this subreddit for why voter suppression is ok?

• Upvotes

Have any of you got a single argument to justify the change that isn't entirely dependent on sour grapes and arbitrary denial of rights? I swear every single argument supporting this shit is just some variation of "well I did it, why couldn't they" and being a judgemental prat to justify it.

"Oh these drop kicks shouldn't vote if they can't get their shit together enough to enroll" as if your arbitrary standards for what's a reasonable expectation have any justification beyond your own prejudice. You know why it's arbitrary? Because the explicit reason for changing the system is a fucking lie and the electoral commission called it out because they don't believe it's justified based on the evidence. Never mind the fact we waited weeks of negotiation last election after the count, the saving time shit is bullshit.

I'd love to see a single argument that isn't rooted in arbitrary prejudice and before you go all BUT THEY'RE INCOMPETENT, motherfucker we let people with dementia vote and rightfully so. Competency isn't a requirement for the right to vote and it never has been, if it was we wouldn't have universal voting but we do because it's the morally just solution to who gets to vote. Denying people basic rights to increase your chances of being elected is morally abhorrent and I don't think a single one of you can provide an intellectually consistent justification for it not devoid of morality.

Link showing electoral commission's argument below.

Politics Dealing with a future without our kids

• Upvotes

There is a lot going on at the moment, I've just waited 2 months to see a gp in person, the specialist referral has been silent for 2 weeks despite being told they'd contact us that week. We have private insurance, but it appears all levels of health is at crisis point.

While that scares me, what is terrifying is what my kids (12 and 13) are talking about with their future, they see school friends leaving for Australia, they see the news stories and how unaffordable houses are, how everything is expensive. They have both told me they see their future outside of New Zealand. This generation aren't planning OEs but immigration to countries where they can see themselves reaching their dreams. While they may not be entirely correct, I believe that New Zealand is becoming a country where you are punished for staying, our best and brightest will succeed and thrive overseas where they would struggle here.

How are we going to cope with our kids not at home? When my mum got sick, I was able to be there for her. I don't think we will have the same care when we are older and there is nothing we can do to change that without the government making some huge changes.

Politics Campaigning on Election Day vs the advance voting period

• Upvotes

No campaigning or advertising including billboards is allowed on election day. I understand why that was the case historically, to avoid last minute influence or pressure. However, with more and more people voting in advance, people voting on election day have more protection than people voting any other time and that to me seems inconsistent. Is it time to change the law?

I think maybe the billboards and other advertising are fine and should be allowed on election day as well. But there should be heavy penalties for putting pressure on individual voters (eg. Door knocking, approaching people with political sales pitches in and around polling places), for the entire period that voting is open. Would that be a more consistent approach? Do you have other ways to solve the inconsistency? Is this something that doesn't need fixing?

Politics Enrolled early but not on the role - happening to anyone else?

• Upvotes

Hopefully this post is allowed.

Months ago I checked my enrollment and despite being enrolled at my address for the previous 2 elections they had no record of my enrollment. So I scratched my head then re-enrolled. This was at least a couple of months ago.

Today I went to vote (with no easy vote card because I wasn't sent one) and what do you know, I'm not on the roll. I had to submit a special vote which meant filling out all my details again by hand, and was informed that if I was enrolled it will be counted and I wasn't it won't.

Will I ever find out if my vote was counted? I'm a little annoyed because if they hadn't changed the enrollment date rules this wouldn't be an issue.

I'm hoping this is an anomaly but I'm curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Discussion How many of you are a single car family with children?

• Upvotes

My wife and I are thinking about becoming a one-car family, but we’re still unsure whether to pull the trigger.

We both work full-time and have a 3-year-old son who goes to kindy each day. My wife drops him off every morning, as it’s on her way to work, while I start work around 6:30am in central Christchurch.

We’ve considered getting an electric bike with a child seat so I could commute to work and pick up our son in the afternoons. However, it would be a pretty big commitment to rely on that form of transport, rain or shine!

My commute is about 11km each way, and luckily, we live in North Brighton, where I believe there will soon be a cycleway connecting all the way into tow.

EDIT - Sorry I should have been specific but my sons kindy is only around 2km from our house, my workplace is 11km so on days I have to pick him up I would just get him on the way home from work. I pick him up twice a week when my wife has afterschool meetings.

Advice Chinese Mini Excavator

• Upvotes

I'm taking the plunge- Madam Chair has approved the $$- and I'm getting a mini excavator for a load of landscaping work, and various small drainage projects around the small-block.

I've decided on a Rippa ECO R10, available from distributor in Nelson.

Calling out to anyone with a Rippa in NZ to tell me what they've learned, what they think etc....

HELP!!

Advice Working fulltime alternate weekly with 7am-3pm and 3pm-11pm along with studying fulltime online Masteral program

After my daytime job for years, I was offered a job with weekly alternating 7am-3pm and 3pm-11pm shifts. theres a lot of pros for the job (for in placement/paid because I do it at work, for saving money for uni fees without going on student loan, etc). the cons - is this really doable or am I overdoing it and would risk physical and mental exhaustion? Is it still good to try it for a few months and see if it works out or do I ask for casual position instead? The reason why I cant let go of the offer is because its too hard to find a job now and staying at home for months will drive my head overthinking etc.

another option would be go on student loan, and just wait for a casual or part time position in the same industry while studying fulltime online.

Hopefully I hear from someone who has experience this. Or suggestions please. This has been running in my head for weeks

Discussion Anyone else getting crossed lines/ background voices on mobile calls lately?

I’m on Kogan Mobile (which uses the One NZ network) and twice this week while talking to someone from a completely quiet space, the person on the other end could distinctly hear a voice in the background on my side. I couldn't hear the voices at all on my end, but they could hear both me and the voice at the exact same time. My partner also heard a random voice on call with someone else recently. Is anyone else experiencing these weird background conversations/voices on their calls lately? Should i raise a complaint to kogan?
