Meta Upcoming rule change: Political self-posts

Kia ora r/newzealand,

We're announcing an upcoming change to the subreddit rules: Political self-posts will no longer be permitted on r/newzealand from January 2027

We're announcing this in advance so that everyone has time to become familiar with the new rule before it comes into effect. So for clarity: *there will be no changes during the lead-up to this election. *

What will this mean?

Political news articles and other external links will still be welcome, and discussion of those via link posts will continue as usual.

However, self-posts primarily intended to start political discussions, debate political issues, or share personal takes on political news will no longer be allowed.

Reddit now has a number of NZ communities dedicated to political discussion, such as r/kiwipolitics, r/kiwiantipodea and r/nzpolitics. We'd like to give those communities more room to grow while keeping r/newzealand focused on a broader range of New Zealand news, events, and discussion.

Thanks for being part of the community.

Politics Why are there so many excuses in this subreddit on why people weren't able to enrol?

I literally enrolled in 5 minutes from overseas in Uzbekistan while drunk on a work trip at 12am.

I don't understand how this is supposed to be difficult.

Edit: ps I do recommend visiting Uzbekistan. Very interesting place.

Politics Muffin Break unofficial 2026 election Bean Poll

Found this at a muffin break at an Auckland mall today. Photographed Wednesday 28th of October. Very creative way to see who people are voting for while we wait for the final results.

Looks like every muffin break is doing this.

What are our thoughts?

Discussion DO BETTER

(Kindly) do better. I am drained by the lack of compassion and callousness I see around me every day. Why do so many people focus only on their own self interest? Why are so many of you okay with how desensitised you have become to other people’s suffering? Since when do you have to agree with someone’s actions or beliefs to acknowledge that they are struggling and that they need help?

It would be wonderful if more people could take responsibility for the society they live in, rather than just worrying about how it affects them personally. I’m not referring to those who are already struggling and who are just trying to make ends meet, I’m talking about those who have enough stability and resources to make a positive impact.

Instead of punishing people for their “bad decision making” or “lack of motivation” especially when they are clearly already vulnerable, why not give the benefit of the doubt? Why not for once just consider they are already trying, that the odds may be stacked against them, and that sometimes good hardworking people can still fall behind? Why do you have to relate it back to how hard you worked and how much you overcame? Wouldn’t you want it to be easier for others since you know how difficult it can be? And then ask yourself why the conversation is always reduced to whether something will supposedly “improve the economy”, as though that is the only measure of whether a society is doing well?

It’s small minded and to be honest deeply un-Kiwi to let people go without, yet so many seem to have forgotten their morals and values the second the next shiny object of consumerism is waved in front of their face. Keeping up appearances is made to be more of a priority than showing genuine concern for the vulnerable members of our society. We are supposed to be setting an example for the rest of the world of what a fair society can look like. Punishing people and pushing them further down is not going to lead them to better decisions. Making someone’s life harder when they are already struggling does not magically make them more motivated, more capable, or more stable.

On top of that, it is concerning that so often the only time people express sadness is on social media when someone harms themselves, but continue to then ignore the conditions that may have led that person to that point. You cannot ignore people’s suffering while they are alive and then suddenly discover compassion once something terrible happens.

If even a few more people could look beyond their own perspective and actually listen to what others are telling you they need, it would make a difference. The cost of living is making life difficult for everyone at the moment to various degrees, but that’s why it’s so important that we dig deep into our hearts and try to show up better for each other even when the urge is to double down on making sure our own needs are met. It’s not idealistic to say that a better world is possible and I don’t know how anyone expects it to be different if you won’t even imagine what the next steps toward it as individuals could be.

Whether you like the person or agree with their decisions is not the main concern you should be focusing on. You do not have to approve of every choice someone has made in order to recognise that they are a human being who is struggling.

TLDR: YOUR FEELINGS ARE NOT MORE URGENT THAN THE EVERYDAY NEEDS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE VULNERABLE AND STRUGGLING. GOOD PEOPLE HELP PEOPLE IN NEED WHETHER THEY AGREE WITH THEM OR NOT. BE A GOOD PERSON.

Politics Are we on the ‘fast track’ to becoming America?

I am sure there are a ton more examples and it needs to be noted Labour is still kinda limp on anti corruption laws.

Clear lobbying, such as:
- Cozying up to Ciggie companies - Cheers National
- Sacrificing ecosystems for mining for political backers - Cheers NZF

Privatisation
- Intentional Push Towards user pays healthcare - Thanks National and co.
- Charter schools - Cheers Act

Pandering to bunny boilers
- Abortion and gender bullshit - Cheers NZF

Selling of media companies to billionaires
- Newstalk ZB is full Fox now. TPU want us to sell rnz.

Excessive use of Fast Tracking
- Thanks a lot NACTNZ

Big money donors
- There are promises behind Acts fundraising.

Honestly I think New Zealand First is a massive issue, Shane Jones in particular. But the Fast Tracking law is what gets me.

The more I look at it the more we seem to be striving to be USA. And honestly I thought we’d be better than this.

I’m personally (obviously) left aligned, without an adult in Greens since Shaw left I’m no longer a fan.

Am I stupid for thinking that NACT are getting in and throwing my vote at top? I feel like the best play is watering down NZFs influence but honestly they seem kinda weak. Any one else voting primarily against a party?

Politics Can you vote if you have Dementia?

My Dad has Dementia. He's voted in every election previously and is very political. However, he does now get confused easily about things, especially if they are new or out of the ordinary.

He says he wants to vote, I'm just a bit worried that when he gets into the booth he's going to forget what to do. He's also worried about cocking it up.

Any ideas?

Politics 10 new taxes vs $45B hole

We see all the advertising about Labour and friends having 10 new taxes.

Let’s look at NACT and unfunded promises.

  1. NZF and $4B for trains.
  2. Buying BNZ - $20B. (7 to 30 depending on who you ask).
  3. ACT - defence spending - $12B.
  4. ACT - cancer treatment center - $10B

Even if we balance this with $20b is cuts, it’s $25B with no funding plan.

Let’s ask Luxon how he will fund all that?

Discussion How many of you are a single car family with children?

• Upvotes

My wife and I are thinking about becoming a one-car family, but we’re still unsure whether to pull the trigger.

We both work full-time and have a 3-year-old son who goes to kindy each day. My wife drops him off every morning, as it’s on her way to work, while I start work around 6:30am in central Christchurch.

We’ve considered getting an electric bike with a child seat so I could commute to work and pick up our son in the afternoons. However, it would be a pretty big commitment to rely on that form of transport, rain or shine!

My commute is about 11km each way, and luckily, we live in North Brighton, where I believe there will soon be a cycleway connecting all the way into tow.

EDIT - Sorry I should have been specific but my sons kindy is only around 2km from our house, my workplace is 11km so on days I have to pick him up I would just get him on the way home from work. I pick him up twice a week when my wife has afterschool meetings.
