/r/Pretoria Community Update: New Rules regarding Solicitation and Content Relevance

Hi everyone,

As /r/Pretoria continues to grow, we are introducing a few official rules to ensure the subreddit remains a helpful, safe, and relevant resource for everyone living in or visiting our city. We've kept intervention to a minimum so far. In general we've only banned blatant racism, bots, and spammers, so we've generally got a very well behaved community.

We want to keep this space focused on discussion, advice, and news specific to the Jacaranda City, however. To support this, we have added the following rules to the sidebar, effective immediately:

A. No Begging, Crowdfunding, or Financial Solicitation

We have seen an increase in posts asking for financial assistance, "loans," or e-wallets. While we sympathize with those in difficult situations, Reddit is not a safe platform for verifying financial needs.

What is banned: Requests for money, e-wallets, and links to crowdfunding sites (e.g., BackaBuddy, GoFundMe).

Why: This rule is in place to protect our community from potential scams and unverified solicitation.

Advice: If you are in need, please reach out to registered NPOs or charity organizations rather than soliciting here.

B. Keep Content Relevant to Pretoria and the greater Tshwane

Please ensure your posts are directly related to Pretoria or the greater Tshwane municipality.

General SA News: News that affects the whole country (e.g., general Eskom updates, national politics) belongs in /r/southafrica unless it has a specific Pretoria angle.

Other Cities: Posts clearly meant for Joburg or other regions will be removed.

Context: If you post a photo or link where the connection to Pretoria isn't obvious, please explain it in the title.

C. Standard Civility & Privacy

We are also formalizing standard expectations:

Be Civil: Disagreements are fine; personal attacks and hate speech are not.

No Spam: Accounts that exist solely to advertise businesses will be banned.

No Doxing: Do not post personal contact details (phone numbers, addresses) of yourself or others.

These rules are here to improve the quality of the sub. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment below or message the moderators. Finally, thanks to everyone reporting posts, messaging the mods for clarifications, participating, /u/Afreak-du-sud for their post on the big uptick of begging and the scamming that inevitably goes with it. Don't worry, though, we don't ban for tagging the mods.. šŸ˜‚

Thanks for helping us keep /r/Pretoria a great community!

Do you guys know of any pawn shops that collect big stuff from a storage container in Centurion + do you want a free bookshelf?

Edit: I meant that WILL collect. Sorry can't change the title.

I'm starting a new life, and need to rid myself of pretty much all that I own. The little bit of furniture I own and the big appliances are the biggest problem.

I'm hoping to get it out of the storage on friday afternoon/Saturday. I'm not currently in Gauteng, and I'm leaving again Sunday so there's a limited window for this to happen.

Also, one of the items is a fridge, but since it's in a storage container I won't be able to plug it in to test it. Would they still be willing to buy it, even for less in that case? The other is a king bed. There's also potentially a washing machine if a friend doesn't buy it from me.

I also have other miscellaneous items, like kitchen stuff and a vacuum.

But the bed and fridge are the problems.

P.S. I have beat up bookshelves I can't really sell. One is a bit chipped. The other is just a bit ugly. It was a figurine display shelf originally. I got them from someone I have no attachment to and was going to abandon them. If you can get to Glen Austin on Saturday you can literally just have them for free. They mean nothing to me.

Where to buy affordable sports clothing?

As the title suggests, i am in the market to buy some sports clothing. I am not prepared to pay almost R1000 for a sports bra.

I gym, run, and am training for Hyrox/Deadly Dozen. Any suggestions are nuch appreciated!

Especially the more comfy clothes. The one pair of shorts I own is the tyoe that goes up my crack within the first 3 steps i take in a run and it really is super uncomfortable.

Thanks!

For curious people who want to be self educated in some topics.

Hi guys!

I was thinking of starting a little club where we educate each other on different topics. It would be on Zoom or WhatsApp, with scheduled times where we come together, discuss a certain topic, share what we know and learn from one another.

The club wouldn't just be about learning new things, but also improving our debating, communication and public speaking skills and more.

I'm looking for people aged 18–25, male or female. We don't need to be many; at least 3–5 people would be enough to get started.

Idk if anyone would be interested, but if you are, please comment below and I'll text you!

Looking for a puppy named Max (long shot)

Hi everyone,

This is a super long shot, but I met an Afrikaans family with a young puppy named Max at Lynnwood Padel a few weeks ago. If you know anyone with a new puppy named Max, please DM me.

Does anyone need an au pair, or know a family who does?

Hi everyone!

I thought I’d put this out there because you never know who might be looking for someone, or who might know someone who is.

I’m currently looking for an au pair opportunity and would love to connect with a family who needs an extra pair of hands (and a responsible one at that).

A little about me: I’m a recent university graduate with a degree in Forensic Science, which probably says something about my personality. I pay attention to details, take responsibility seriously, and tend to be quite observant. I’m also someone who values structure, routine and doing things properly.

I’m hoping to find a family looking for someone dependable, patient and genuinely willing to help make their day-to-day lives a little easier. I understand that looking after children is a responsibility that goes beyond simply keeping them occupied, and I would take that responsibility seriously.

If you’re a parent looking for an au pair, or you know a family who might need one, I’d really appreciate it if you reached out or pointed me in the right direction.

I’m happy to share more about myself, my availability and any other relevant details privately.

Thank you! ā¤ļø

Safest areas in Pretoria

Hi everyone, I am looking for a safe area to move to in Pretoria. My office is in Menlyn. Ideally the closer to Menlyn the better. I found a place in Lynnwood Glen but upon asking around about safety in the area, I was warned by a couple of people that it’s very unsafe. So it’s left me feeling extremely uncomfortable with moving into the area. I would appreciate any advice.

Any employers in Pretoria hiring for December?

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for a job in Pretoria for December, after finishing my matric finals. I’m 18 and looking for my first work opportunity.
I’m a hardworking, dedicated and reliable person with good communication and people skills. I’m a quick learner, willing to take on new challenges and happy to put in the effort to get the job done properly. I’m also comfortable working with others and interacting with customers.
I’m open to different types of work, including retail, hospitality, customer service or general assistant positions.
If anyone knows of a business that’s hiring temporary or seasonal staff for December, or has any recommendations on where I could apply, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!

Do you actually agree with the party you're voting for in Tshwane? I built a free, non-partisan quiz to check before 4 November.

Should the state ever take land without paying for it? Should SAA be sold? Should unpaid electricity bills be cancelled? Should private companies run the water where the city can't?

WhichParty https://whichparty.co.za asks 30 questions like these and shows how closely you match with each of the eight biggest parties. Every party also has its own page showing where it stands on every issue.

The positions come from party manifestos, conference resolutions, votes, official statements, etc. And they're all linked to the sources.

I've tried hard to keep it fair. The goal is to help voters make an informed decision. If something looks wrong or slanted, tell me and I'll check it against the party's own documents.

Looking for a partner in crime… the strictly fun, good-vibes, no-crime kind!

I’m looking for a female friend to hang out with, explore new places, try fun activities, grab drinks or coffee, enjoy good food, laugh until our stomachs hurt, and occasionally make questionable decisions that turn into great stories.

Life’s too short to keep saying, ā€œWe should do something sometimeā€ and then never actually do it!

If you’re fun, easygoing, enjoy a bit of adventure, and are keen to make new memories and build a genuine friendship, let’s connect!

Bonus points if you can turn a boring Tuesday into a whole event.

Friendship applications are officially open. Good vibes are compulsory; boring is optional! šŸ’•

I’m a white guy, structural engineer by trade. Enjoy the bush and 4x4 adventures. Comfortable in any setting and a true gentleman with a big heart. Looking for a real friendship with someone like minded
