You guys are getting more than 10 units for R150?
24F here. This is killing me guys, my electricity is costing me an arm and a leg, I work 7 days a week to pay for my studies and I've gotten 2 days off this year, (I say this to explain that I should NOT be struggling like this.) and electricity is KILLING me, I put in R300 this week, and it's lasted me like 3 days, I don't even have a TV, or anything that uses too much electricity except my fridge maybe, I cook on a one plate, electricity-saving, plugin stove that my mom gifted me for my birthday, and still my electricity finishes SO quickly and is way too expensive, I work from home, so I don't even have travel costs, I shower twice a week and bucket bath the other 5 days of the week so again, I should NOT be struggling like this, but if I don't work I get salary cuts! What am I going to do to last me until Monday? If I can't work I'll lose my job and I don't qualify for free units, what are you guys doing to save electricity or spend less on electricity? I need these 5 units to last me until, literally Tuesday morning, ANY ideas welcome! My heart goes out to those with travel costs.
Off topic but the other day there was a lady on the side of the road who did deliveries for Woolworths, she was in TEARS because she was standing there until someone saw her and her son was in the car alone about 2 km down the road, while she waited in a more well-known spot for help, and she cried and cried because she works JUST to put petrol into her car and barely cover her son's schooling, what has our cost of living come to? We work SO hard, and we just can't get ahead.

Bluff/Montclair
Hi, Redditors! šš¾
Iām a 30-year-old Black gay man living on the Bluff, and Iām looking to make some new friends!
Iād love to meet people who enjoy going out for coffee, grabbing lunch, and exploring different spots around Durban on Saturdays or Sundays. It would be lovely to have someone to try out new places with, enjoy good conversations, and just spend some quality time together.
Full disclosure: Iām gay, so female friends are especially welcome! š But honestly, anyone who isnāt homophobic is more than welcome.
I live near Bluff Road and would also love to find a walking or jogging buddy. Whether itās a casual stroll, a morning jog, or a spontaneous coffee date, Iām keen!
Iām really just looking to build genuine friendships with people nearby who enjoy getting out of the house, exploring, and making the most of their weekends.
A small safety note: Iād prefer that we chat a little first and meet somewhere public initially. Just a simple precaution to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable.
If youāre around the Bluff or anywhere in Durban and this sounds like your kind of thing, feel free to reach out! š

Event/Meetup Making Friends in Your 30s and 40s in Ballito, KZN
Iām a 34-year-old woman living in Ballito, and Iāve been struggling with social isolation since returning to South Africa after spending several years working overseas.
One thing Iāve realised is how incredibly difficult it is to make meaningful friendships in your thirties. Everyone seems to have their established circles, families, routines and commitments. And somehow, you find yourself living a perfectly functional adult life without much of a social community.
Iām self-employed, financially independent, have travelled extensively and continue to travel. I have a million interests, but very few people to share them with.
I love electronic music, animals, psychology, space, documentaries, horror movies, international travel, plane watching āļø, intellectually stimulating conversations reading, and generally anything that makes life feel interesting.
Lately, Iāve been thinking a lot about ageing, longevity and the importance of social connection.
It occurred to me that if I got married tomorrow, I wouldnāt have any bridesmaids. If I broke my leg, I genuinely wouldnāt know which friend to call to take me to hospital.
And I suspect Iām not the only person living like this.
Iād love to create a small friendship group of men and women, ideally between 30 and 50, who live in Ballito or the surrounding areas and genuinely want to build lasting friendships.
Maybe youāve recently relocated from Johannesburg or Cape Town. Maybe youāre divorced, single, married without much of a social circle, an expat whoās returned home, or simply someone who wants more meaningful connections.
Iām imagining something along these lines:
š·A weekly supper club : Meeting once a week for dinner, either at someoneās home or a local restaurant. Good food, conversations, laughter, and gradually getting to know one another.
monthly adventures : Planning something fun together. A weekend away, a hike, a game reserve, a concert, a road trip, or discovering somewhere new.
šCelebrating life together : Birthdays, Christmas, New Yearās Eve, milestones, and all the little occasions that are better when shared.
šA genuine support system : People who eventually become the friends you can call when life gets difficult, not just when thereās something fun happening.
Time is the most precious currency we have and thereās something very precious about spending it with others.
Perhaps we could start with a casual coffee or dinner somewhere in Ballito and see where it goes.
If any of this resonates with you, please comment or send me a message. Iād love to hear a little about you.
Maybe there are more of us out there than we realise. ā¤ļø

Recommendation Puppy school/training
Helloooo, Iām looking for any recommendations for a reliable and trust worthy puppy school/training facility for my pup, heās 10 weeks tomorrow and has been given the clearing to go out for training. Heās a German shepherd and is just the cutest little guy but he is quite the biter and Iāve tried at home training but it doesnāt seem to work. Anywhere in Durban would be appreciated but preferably somewhere in the Berea/Musgrave area is fine, even Durban north. Thanks!

Food banks
Hi All
I wanted to find out if there are food banks or food drives open to the public.
I know there are soup kitchens and organisations that feed the homeless. My partner and I are seriously struggling since I lost my job a few months back, I'm just trying to find any and all options to supplement food in our house.
I'm not asking for charity or donations, we've just reached a point where we skip meals to stretch food to ensure our daughter gets enough on a daily basis.
His job holds up all expenses but after bond and bills are paid, nothing is left and I'm trying to do my best to stop our situation from becoming worst whilst I'm not working.
Any advice is appreciated.

Utility/Alert Bidvest McCarthy VW Umhlanga: same engine fault on my T-Cross for two years, 8 repair attempts, and now they want another go before valuing it. Anyone else had this with them?
Crossposting from r/CarTalkZA for anyone local - full details and replies are in the original.
Short version: bought the car from them as a demo in 2023. Since November 2024, while still under warranty, it has been back about eight times with the same misfire and limp mode, three of those on a flatbed. In October they confirmed it is still the same underlying fault. Their trade-in offer, even with "assistance", left me R20k worse off than selling to WeBuyCars and buying the same new car from another VW dealer, and VW SA's answer is to attempt to repair it again first.

Best birding spots in and around Durban? (within 15-20km)
I'm thinking of taking an uber to Kloof to see what its like there. So far I've just been going around mostly parks in Durban, but I'm trying to get around more. And I want to start fairly near and then work my way out with time.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Local News A positive look at eThekwini polling data
The eNCA MarkData poll has MK at 48% which is not great, however this is down from the 55% that Ipsos had them at. Anything under 50% allows for the continuation of a coalition government to keep them out of power.
The best thing you as a voter can do is to vote for one of the parties who will contribute to a coalition government. While there may be smaller parties and independents not included above who appeal to you, if they can not earn enough of the vote to contribute to a coalition government, then it is unfortunately a wasted vote.
For anyone not aware of the break down of the KZN provincial government currently keeping MK out of power it is as follows:
Provincial Government Coalition:
- IFP (15 seats, as well as the premier position held by Thami Ntuli)
- ANC (14 seats)
- DA (11 seats)
- NFP (1 seat)
eThekwini EXCO coalition:
Voting block * ANC (5 seats, as well as the mayor position held by Cyril Xaba) * EFF (1 seat) * NFP (1 seat)
Opposition block * DA (3 seats) * IFP (1 seat)
Make sure to vote and tell everyone you know to vote.

So... Who do we vote for...?
So if DA is Zionist/Israeli Apologists etc ... ANC have dropped the ball, corruption, maladministration, etc... EFF are aggressive, flipflop populists with JuJu ... MK are militant, conservative, corruption, xenophobic with Zuma/Jacintha... Action SA are xenophobia and small in KZN... IFP are smaller than ever, passive, conservative... And all other parties are not really going to make a difference I suppose... Who do we vote for and why??

Do you actually agree with the party you're voting for in eThekwini? I built a free, non-partisan quiz to check before 4 November.
Should private companies run the water where the city canāt keep it running? Should unpaid electricity bills be cancelled? Should the city employ its own guards and cleaners, even if it costs more? Should every household that canāt afford a house get one free?
WhichParty ( whichparty.co.za ) asks 30 questions like these and shows how closely you match each of the eight biggest parties. Each party also has a page showing where it stands on every issue, and nothing you answer is stored.
Every position comes from the partyās own manifesto, conference resolutions, votes, or official statements, with a link to the source.
Iāve tried hard to keep it fair. The goal is to help people make an informed choice, so if something looks leading, tell me, and Iāll check it against the partyās own documents.

Picture The old Sea World Aquarium, apparently 1970s
It's definitely before 1973 because I found a different photo from 1973 and the red building on the left is gone.
Interesting that you can see the bench that was in yesterday's post. Behind the red pole on the right
The teardrop / circular pool was the shark tank
Also makes you realise how much of our current beachfront is reclaimed. Before the sand pumping scheme was built, high tide came right up to the Lower Marine Parde and regularly flooded it. This photo looks like it was taken at about 2-3pm taking a guess from the shadows, so if it was spring tides that day, the tide still had another 2.5 hours to push
