Discussion My Gen Alpha kids think my entire childhood was illegal

5.5k Upvotes

I'm 37 kids in discussion are 10 and almost 8. Over the weekend we were talking about influencers and their antics. My 10 yo showed me a video of two guys trying to eat an ice cream cone in 3 bites and tells me she thinks this is why girls live longer. I laughed because all I could think of is what her reaction is going to be when I tell her about Jackass. When I explained it to them they were shocked! They kept saying how dangerous it is to act that way knowing kids are watching. I explained adults didn't care about our safety or mental wellbeing back then like they do now. They were complaining about Halloween specials for kids and how they aren't scary enough so I found Are you Afraid of the Dark and offered to put it on for them. They swore it wouldn't be scary because it's made for kids. I played a random episode and within 10 mins they were begging for me to turn it off. My 8 yo loves folklore and cryptids(he has a stuffed mothman he carries everywhere) he has just discovered creepypastas and was telling me about them and now it's crazy that stuff like that is on the Internet and asked if we had anything scary when I was a kid. I told him yes, we had rotten.com and vaguely told him what was on it. He looked at me shocked and asked me how we were on the dark web and we didn't get arrested.

I have now found it incredibly entertaining to tell my kids what the early 2000s was like because its horrifying to them yet they are equally jealous that they don't get any of the crazy stuff we had because their parents know better.

What's more "lore" I can tell them to freak them out about being a millennial child/teen.

Discussion How many of you are low/no contact with your family?

The past 6 years have been super rough. With how the world is going, my husband and I decided that we would go low contact with my family to see if that helped my mental health.

I entered perimenopause last year and it was intense to say the least. My masking abilities completely went away and I did not realize how nerodivergent my brain is until I couldn't pretend anymore. Now all the behaviors I have dealt with my entire life from my sisters and parents are completely baffling to me. I truly don't understand when people lie, I was never the one to tell a lie so I didn't really notice that other people constantly do. It's actually one of the things my older sister always made fun of me for, she would berate me for being a "goody goody" when actually I was autistic.

I was always the one who would reach out and randomly text people funny things that happened to me. I would tell everything to anyone who asked. Basically overshared because that's how I built connections with people. Now I have pulled back and my phone is basically silent. I don't do social media, this is the only platform I visit on a daily basis.

And I am the most at peace I have ever been. Living in our own little bubble with my husband and child. Has anyone else gone this route?

I talked to one of my older sisters and she is in the exact same boat. She has been going to therapy and healing herself. She is a later Gen Xer and I am an Xennial.

Discussion I'm re-watching the X-files. This is such a well written, well done show. It makes me mourn good writing and plot arcs.

My wife and I decided to re-watch the X-files recently. It is such a good show, but more than that, it's a really great example of a show that is "binge-worthy", but clearly isnt made to be binged. It also doesnt require cheap humor or one-liners to be engaging.

The show has 3 overall plots at all times. The individual episode plot, the season plot, and the series plot. Characters are well thought out, and even side characters are nuanced and have depth. There may be characters that only exist to move the plot, but any character that is recurring has depth.

It is a breath of fresh air to see the pieces come together on a character you didnt think mattered, but ends up being a completely interesting and riveting part of the show.

The biggest thing I've noticed is the pacing. The pacing is incredibly consistent. You certainly have episodes that put more in to the plot than others, but the exposition is incredibly consistent in pacing and you don't miss out on everything if you dont stare at the screen while some character explains the plot that will impact the next 3 years of a show so if you miss it you are completely in the dark.

I really feel that television today is either weak story that only exists to make space for terrible one-liners and zingers, or it is well done, but instead of giving us regular new episodes, we get 6 episodes over the course of a few months, and then a 2 year or more break. And by the time new episodes are released, you have to go back and watch summaries of the in-depth plot points you missed or were alluded to, or worse yet need some vignette or outside-the-show information to understand.

Anyways, if anybody needs a show to watch my recommendation is probably pretty clear:)

  • The text was originally written as a joke/filler classified ad by staffer John Silveira and published in the September/October 1997 issue of Backwoods Home Magazine.
  • It blew up into a widespread viral internet meme on October 27, 2005, when a user on YTMND paired the classified ad and the photo of the man with the mullet with the song "Push It To The Limit".

Serious 3 years since Matthew Perry died

Post image
147 Upvotes

It’s been 3 years since we lost Matthew Perry, and it still hurts knowing that the man who made millions of people laugh is no longer with us.

For so many of us, Matthew wasn’t just an actor. He was Chandler Bing, the sarcastic, awkward, lovable friend who could turn even the most ordinary moment into something hilarious. His jokes, his expressions, his perfectly timed comebacks, and that unforgettable smile made Friends feel like home.

But behind all those laughs was a real person who faced his own struggles, and that makes his legacy even more meaningful. He gave us countless moments of happiness through his work, and even years from now, new generations will discover Chandler Bing and laugh just as hard as we did.

Rewatching Friends will never feel quite the same knowing Matthew is gone, but every time Chandler makes us laugh, a little piece of Matthew lives on.

Other Youth working at the thrift store

I went to the thrift store yesterday looking for a yellow jacket and black pants with a red stripe. I'm going to be Jay for Halloween. My coworker is going to be bob. My debit card wasn't working with their machine. So i was just chatting with the kids behind the counter who were discussing where they were going to go party in a town a couple hours away. I laughed because I worked at the same thrift store when I was 21 and made the same 2 hour journey to go party.

Here is where I got a reality check of today's youth.

Both kids had no idea who Jay and Silent bob were. When I stepped aside to figure out my debit card issues a lady came up and she was buying a stack of cds. The kid had to ASK HER WHAT THEY WERE!! We both laughed at the kid. Another lady our age heard the conversation and also laughed. Then he told her the price. 50 cents each and we laughed more and discussed how expensive they used to be for so few songs.

I figured this group would understand how ridiculous this is. My boys know what CDs are and who jay and silent bob are.

Idk who those kids parents were but they need some education 😂😂😂

Nostalgia Popped collar toddler

This week is Fall ~SPiRiT WEEK*~ at my toddler’s daycare. Tomorrow is “Decades Day: Dress up to your favorite decade!”

Like this child hasn’t even lived a mf decade, let alone know what a decade means. I’m not trying to knock daycare ~*SPiRiT WEEK~ altogether (although I certainly don’t think there needs to be four a year…), but this whole “favorite decade” concept just seems absurd for the age group. I guess it’s not as uninspired as this week’s “Apple Day: Dress head to toe in your favorite apple color,” but at least the kid has a favorite apple color!

In any event, we are trying to be good sports and participate. I refuse, however, to purchase a new outfit for these shenanigans, so Popped Collar 2000’s Toddler it is!

He’s too young for a puka shell necklace, but it’s getting cold out there so I think we’ll go for a double pop (yikes!). Any other suggestions to round his look out?!

Discussion Feels good to have a physical at 40 and have no issues or no medications needed.

• Upvotes

I've always been active physically. I have a desk job but outside of work I do a lot of exercise. Last year I was cycling 100-150 miles a week. This year I've been trying to walk 30 plus miles in a day. I'm still training my way up to it but last Sunday I did 15 with the dog. He loved it.

My only vice is beer a few times a week. I've been cutting out most meat nowadays too. Still will have a burger here and there but mainly doing beans and eggs for my protein.

I didn't expect any surprises at the doctor and I got the results back a bit ago. Triglycerides were a bit higher but I think that's because walking isn't as intense as cycling is.

Once I get my 30 mile accomplishment completed I'm going to start adding weight. I was reading that Roman soldiers could march 30 miles plus in a day. I want to see if I can do it too.

I will keep staying active until the day I die. I'll be the 80 year on a bicycle cruising around my small town.

Now if I can just get my mental health under control...

Discussion Millennials who were born in the 80s but grew up in the 90s, are they considered 90s kids?

• Upvotes

I was born in 1988. I was only two when that decade ended, and I have like zero memory of it. The 90s on the other hand were full of memories. Which is why I consider myself a 90s kid despite technically not being from it. Is that fair?

Discussion Just asked by a younger coworker about life in 2008. Get me me rocker

My coworker (25) just asked me (41) about life in 2008. We're both new to our place of employment, but this is his first job out of college whereas I have 15ish years of experience in my field.

He's a good dude and was legitimately curious about how the job market and life is now compared to the crisis that was 08. I graduated college in May '09 so I was explaining how things were; experienced people losing their jobs and applying for/getting the entry level jobs that were generally stepping stones for new grads, part time jobs or retail/grocery store positions having more applicants from everyone trying to keep a roof over their head, the lead up to the mortgage crisis, etc, etc. I recommended he watch "Too Big To Fail" as that movie could explain what happened better than I ever could.

Not gonna lie it felt like "tell me a story, Grandpa," but I explained the good of it too. The fun times we had with bars and house parties, showing him pics from those times on my Facebook, explaining how some new grads survived.

It also turned into a rant about post 9/11 life. He's never lived in a world without TSA - we have. He didnt have the same analog childhood we did; not that I expected him too, just a contrast of differences as life changed.

He made a comment about how time moves too quickly and I chuckled in agreement. I pointed out the thing that messes with me is some of us still have our old consoles with our saved games around. Our kids now can jump on and pick up where we left off all those years ago. Kinda messed with him as well.
