Discussion Is Nathan Fielder the greatest Millennial? (1983)

Post image

Sure many Millennials have redefined technology like social media and AI. Nathan Fielder between 2022-2025 was learning how to fly a commercial airplane, made an entire scripted drama series, and did a vertigo with Elizabeth Holmes and her husband I really ain’t doing shit with my life.

Serious Elder millennials, question.

44/m here, why is it watching 2000s emo reels of dudes reacting to songs at concerts gets me too? Is it cuz when the song came out it reminds you of a simpler time or are you sad/happy cuz it hits that was a peak moment that youll never get back?

Other Youth working at the thrift store

I went to the thrift store yesterday looking for a yellow jacket and black pants with a red stripe. I'm going to be Jay for Halloween. My coworker is going to be bob. My debit card wasn't working with their machine. So i was just chatting with the kids behind the counter who were discussing where they were going to go party in a town a couple hours away. I laughed because I worked at the same thrift store when I was 21 and made the same 2 hour journey to go party.

Here is where I got a reality check of today's youth.

Both kids had no idea who Jay and Silent bob were. When I stepped aside to figure out my debit card issues a lady came up and she was buying a stack of cds. The kid had to ASK HER WHAT THEY WERE!! We both laughed at the kid. Another lady our age heard the conversation and also laughed. Then he told her the price. 50 cents each and we laughed more and discussed how expensive they used to be for so few songs.

I figured this group would understand how ridiculous this is. My boys know what CDs are and who jay and silent bob are.

Idk who those kids parents were but they need some education 😂😂😂

Discussion Back in the 90s, is it just me or did the air smell better--could you smell the rain more? Or are we just so stressed out that we don't notice?

I swear the summer air smelled better back in the 90s as a teenager.

Seltzer water really fell off, but it was everywhere in the 2010s. I never stopped. Still drinking several cans of Polar a day.

Nostalgia 90s music artists were poetic, but so unhinged

Holy crap. I decided to revisit a couple of albums that i listened to from late 90s and they are... Poetic, but goddam so unacceptable today.

Bloodhound gang: use your fingers - im singing along to the lyrics and thinking if i did this in public, jail

Next up: presidents of the usa, title album - man this is so good. Candy, lump, old man on the back porch (i can see this being me).

Anyone else listen to this in the 90s?

Discussion The price we pay?

so did we ever consider that not being able to afford life is just the price that we pay for getting to live through the 90s and early 2000s?

Discussion Fellow 1993 millenials, do you consider yourselves zillenials?

So the parameters for the zillenial generation seem to be all over the place depending on who you ask. Some people put it as far back as 1993 or even 1991.

I was in my late teens/early 20s when the culture started to shift, so I got exposed to zillenial pop culture and was still within the marketing demographic. I can still kinda vibe with zillenials because we do have some experiences in common. It's not like there's much difference between your late 20s and your early 30s anyway.

That being said, I feel like my childhood was absolutely more millenial than gen z. I grew up poor so we didn't have cable until I was 8, and I have very clear memories of dial up internet which we kept until 2004 or so. I still got to enjoy classic late 90s cartoons like Hey Arnold, Spongebob, The Wild Thornberries, and Rocket Power, just a teeny bit later than when they originally aired. And I did have the same pop culture experience as my elder millenial cousins, it was just the more tween-friendly version that I got from my Girls Life and Discovery Girl magazines.

I also still remember 9/11 pretty clearly. Being in second grade, I was too young to fully understand the political implications. However, I do remember being actively scared, and the impact of the event was strong enough to affect my worldview.

As for zillenial/zoomer childhood experiences, I played with Bratz dolls and visited Everythinggirl.com, but was too old for Webkinz when they came out. I watched Ned's Declassified and Zoey 101, but had long outgrown Nickelodeon once Victorious came on. Even when iCarly came out, my taste in media was already taking an edgier and more mature direction.

Personally, I'd put the zillenial marker at around 1995/96, but I wanna hear what y'all think!

Discussion Words your Gen Alpha kid probably doesn’t know

In conversation with my youngest and I suggested he spit out the loogie in his throat. His response, “what’s that?” I was shocked! Once I explained he said, “oh I call that phlegm” 😒

What other words are dying out?

Serious 3 years since Matthew Perry died

Post image
150 Upvotes

It’s been 3 years since we lost Matthew Perry, and it still hurts knowing that the man who made millions of people laugh is no longer with us.

For so many of us, Matthew wasn’t just an actor. He was Chandler Bing, the sarcastic, awkward, lovable friend who could turn even the most ordinary moment into something hilarious. His jokes, his expressions, his perfectly timed comebacks, and that unforgettable smile made Friends feel like home.

But behind all those laughs was a real person who faced his own struggles, and that makes his legacy even more meaningful. He gave us countless moments of happiness through his work, and even years from now, new generations will discover Chandler Bing and laugh just as hard as we did.

Rewatching Friends will never feel quite the same knowing Matthew is gone, but every time Chandler makes us laugh, a little piece of Matthew lives on.

Discussion Just asked by a younger coworker about life in 2008. Get me me rocker

My coworker (25) just asked me (41) about life in 2008. We're both new to our place of employment, but this is his first job out of college whereas I have 15ish years of experience in my field.

He's a good dude and was legitimately curious about how the job market and life is now compared to the crisis that was 08. I graduated college in May '09 so I was explaining how things were; experienced people losing their jobs and applying for/getting the entry level jobs that were generally stepping stones for new grads, part time jobs or retail/grocery store positions having more applicants from everyone trying to keep a roof over their head, the lead up to the mortgage crisis, etc, etc. I recommended he watch "Too Big To Fail" as that movie could explain what happened better than I ever could.

Not gonna lie it felt like "tell me a story, Grandpa," but I explained the good of it too. The fun times we had with bars and house parties, showing him pics from those times on my Facebook, explaining how some new grads survived.

It also turned into a rant about post 9/11 life. He's never lived in a world without TSA - we have. He didnt have the same analog childhood we did; not that I expected him too, just a contrast of differences as life changed.

He made a comment about how time moves too quickly and I chuckled in agreement. I pointed out the thing that messes with me is some of us still have our old consoles with our saved games around. Our kids now can jump on and pick up where we left off all those years ago. Kinda messed with him as well.

Discussion Millennials who were born in the 80s but grew up in the 90s, are they considered 90s kids?

• Upvotes

I was born in 1988. I was only two when that decade ended, and I have like zero memory of it. The 90s on the other hand were full of memories. Which is why I consider myself a 90s kid despite technically not being from it. Is that fair?

Discussion My Gen Alpha kids think my entire childhood was illegal

5.5k Upvotes

I'm 37 kids in discussion are 10 and almost 8. Over the weekend we were talking about influencers and their antics. My 10 yo showed me a video of two guys trying to eat an ice cream cone in 3 bites and tells me she thinks this is why girls live longer. I laughed because all I could think of is what her reaction is going to be when I tell her about Jackass. When I explained it to them they were shocked! They kept saying how dangerous it is to act that way knowing kids are watching. I explained adults didn't care about our safety or mental wellbeing back then like they do now. They were complaining about Halloween specials for kids and how they aren't scary enough so I found Are you Afraid of the Dark and offered to put it on for them. They swore it wouldn't be scary because it's made for kids. I played a random episode and within 10 mins they were begging for me to turn it off. My 8 yo loves folklore and cryptids(he has a stuffed mothman he carries everywhere) he has just discovered creepypastas and was telling me about them and now it's crazy that stuff like that is on the Internet and asked if we had anything scary when I was a kid. I told him yes, we had rotten.com and vaguely told him what was on it. He looked at me shocked and asked me how we were on the dark web and we didn't get arrested.

I have now found it incredibly entertaining to tell my kids what the early 2000s was like because its horrifying to them yet they are equally jealous that they don't get any of the crazy stuff we had because their parents know better.

What's more "lore" I can tell them to freak them out about being a millennial child/teen.

Discussion Feels good to have a physical at 40 and have no issues or no medications needed.

• Upvotes

I've always been active physically. I have a desk job but outside of work I do a lot of exercise. Last year I was cycling 100-150 miles a week. This year I've been trying to walk 30 plus miles in a day. I'm still training my way up to it but last Sunday I did 15 with the dog. He loved it.

My only vice is beer a few times a week. I've been cutting out most meat nowadays too. Still will have a burger here and there but mainly doing beans and eggs for my protein.

I didn't expect any surprises at the doctor and I got the results back a bit ago. Triglycerides were a bit higher but I think that's because walking isn't as intense as cycling is.

Once I get my 30 mile accomplishment completed I'm going to start adding weight. I was reading that Roman soldiers could march 30 miles plus in a day. I want to see if I can do it too.

I will keep staying active until the day I die. I'll be the 80 year on a bicycle cruising around my small town.

Now if I can just get my mental health under control...
