Gameathlon: Age of Mythology LAN (Athens, September 11-13)

Post image

Hey r/AgeofMythology,

For those who don't know me. I've been playing Age of Mythology since as long as I can remember. I got into competitive Age of Mythology when I was 14 and have never looked back since. I went from tournament competitor, to top finisher to tournament host and from the outside looking at other titles like Age of Empires 2, Starcraft 2, League of Legends ect. and seeing the crazy LANs they would throw I was always like... one day, one day AoM will get put in the spotlight.

Well, wait no longer. I've already put out an announcement video where you can see what the event is all about but let me just tell you a few things here.

For those unfamiliar with Gameathlon. It is Greece's largest gaming convention. We're talking 20,000+ attendees over a weekend, LAN party setups, live tournaments, cosplay and much more. It's been running for years and it is a proper event. Not just some small local thing.

This year it is running from September 11-13 at a literal Olympic Arena in Athens. The Tae Kwon Do Olympic Arena to be specific. The qualifiers will also be hosted online on my twitch channel starting in Late June/Early July

The reason I'm excited beyond belief is because Age of Mythology made a name for itself partly because of the Greek mythology, because of the connection to the rich history that Greece has and because it made a generation know about things like the Trojan war, Achilles, Odysses and many other ancient war heroes.

If you're in Europe or thinking about a trip to Athens in September, check in, this is real. I'll be there, Moose will be there and the highest profile Age of Mythology competitors will be there as well.

The more noise the AoM community makes about events like this, the more of them we may get so leave a comment, share the news and lets get hype.

Retold Age of Mythology's Biggest LAN Event Since 2003 Kicks off TODAY

$10,000 Gameathlon: Athens LAN: Day 1

It's been a long road. People have travelled from across the globe; Brazil, America, Canada (Australia) and all over Europe to gather to put on one epic show. There will be 13 series, 13 series to decide it all. Every trick in the book is fair game however the only difference is your opponent is right across from you.. oh and the cameras, live audience, thousands of people and everything else as well.

Start time: 1500GMT

The Matchups:
Recon vs IamMagic. I can't tell you how excited I am to watch these two play. They are both legends and are at arguably the highest level they've ever been. Nerves and sleep are the only thing that can hold them back at this point.

Mosca vs Tunison are the next on the chopping block. Two practice buddies. Tunison has told me in the past that they played over 400 games against each other in preparation for S tier tournaments. To put it simply, these guys know each others game like the back of their hand but do they know how each other will play under the pressure of a LAN event? Time will tell.

TheRapl vs Grass is possibly going to be missed from our stream. It is all down to time. But this is a matchup that has some history. TheRapl reminded me of it yesterday - tricks have been used, advantages gained and drama ensued... that was a long time ago though. Hopefully we will get to see some of it!

Our final game is TheMista vs HUSKSUPPE. I've heard it all from TheMista, from I'm unprepared, I haven't played that much, I'm losing a bunch of games all the way to, yeah I'm as prepared as I could be and I'm unbeatable atm. So... yeah, it's psychological warfare from the go but he is up against a bit of a wildcard. SUPPE when fresh is one of the strongest players who just simply couldn't make it through the last series in the qualifiers. He beat everyone at this tournament at least once in the Qualifiers as well with the exception of Recon. He plays his own style that is very different to what everyone else does and he means business today. This is going to be a hell of a series to finish day one on.

Retold Walls and Buildings melt like paper

Post image
39 Upvotes

After playing sever matches with my friends 3vs 3 Titan and trying different god compositions with varying degrees of success we realized one important difference with original AoM. The buildings and the walls, even the strongest ones, are being destroyed in seconds even without the use of siege.

To make matters worse it seems that the siege weapons of the Norse got some sort of durability buff. If they reach a fortress they destroy it in seconds even if you have infantry around them hitting them with everything you got.

In our latest game which we lost I realized that the japanese balista (don't remember the exact name since I don't play them) is basically a machine gun. When the Titan AI was attacking they were dealing insane amount of damage to the army and to the buildings.

My question is why? Is the game focused on offensive play only?
And as an after thought while typing my rant, is the game being optimized for 1vs1 only? Titans are also a lot weaker when compared to the original, they die easier, some minor gods are also less impactful in team games e.g. son of Osiris is always snipped by AI no matter what especially out in the open, good luck as an egyptian to make another 350 favor to summon him again.

Retold What happened to the Colossus?

Despite being buffed in every single way compared to AoT, Colossus feel really weak rn when they felt really strong before, at least in my opinion, and most tierlists from the time seem to agree.

Why do you think they fell off so much? Hero creep? MU creep? Or other siege weapons just make more sense?

Before anyone complains about the fact that we played as Ra in multiple missions, this is clearly not about that. Ra didn't play any part in any story. It was mainly about Osiris, Isis and Set.

"We can invoke Rain from Ra!" was the only time he was even referenced. Compare that to Odin, Zeus or Poseidon. Even Hades had more involvement in the story. We ventured into the underworld to recover his lost relics. Reginleif was a servant of Odin, and Odin's Tower played a minor role in the Titans campaign. There was nothing about Ra in Fott or in any one of the DCL campaigns.

I was watching some old content and saw during October and November last year there were pumpkins instead of berry bushes. Is this happening again this year?

Imagine if we had Horus instead of Isis as major Egyptian god

Reading Egyptian mythology, it's so annoying they have Isis on there instead of Horus. The rivalry between Horus and Set is perhaps the biggest story in Egyptian mythology. Having Isis there is like having Freyja over Thor or someone irrelevant like Demeter over Poseidon or Hades. Ra is fine to stay since he's kinda like the "all father" god in Egyptian mythology.

ISIS is the Favor God

Post image
79 Upvotes

That is her specialization, right? Drop your Pharaoh on the monument, and it will get 2x as much favor. Sounds like it might be a good idea to use if you want to go for some myth unit Strats, right?

Lol. No.

I ran some numbers. See, Ra's special bonus is that his empowering will also empower all the other buildings in the radius... INCLUDING OTHER MONUMENTS. Except he also gets to get extra resources, research things faster, and get buildings up quicker.

So which gods gets more favor? Here are the numbers assuming 5 monuments:

Ra: 0.08 + 0.11 + 0.15 + 0.17 + 0.25 = 0.76
Isis: 0.08 + 0.10 + 0.13 + 0.15 + 0.40 = 0.86

Yep. Isis gets 0.1 more favor than Ra does. That is 12% more favor, or about an extra monument to the villagers. And it costs her 20% of her gold income.

Why on earth do pro players rate Isis so highly?

Edit: Oh right. A+E. That's it.

One good thing about Egypt

Village Centers make a lot of sense.

if you can find a spot that is directly adjacent to gold and food, slapping down a village center there can work out better than going for a full town center. You want to make it so that the Pharaoh is empowering the gold gatherers, and the hunters in the same building.

The 20% boost from the Pharaoh empowerment almost counteracts the 25% slower villager creation, but there should be A LOT less walking time, so it might actually get an edge against a regular town center.

Set has an easier time with this because he can bring food to the TC as husk and boit showed a few months ago, but it still works well for Isis and Ra too, if you can find a good spot

Is it intentional that a taotie can't eat a kuafu?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A taotie can eat workers like Atlantean citizens (not hero citizens). But it can't eat a kuafu, including both regular kuafus and a hero kuafu. Is it a bug? Or intended?

By the way a Jotun can make a one-shot kill against a kuafu.

Retold AoM Retold Multiplayer Matchmaking Needs to Be Fixed

Is anyone else frustrated with the current matchmaking system in Age of Mythology: Retold?

It's really annoying to constantly get matched against players who have 300–400 more Elo than you. These matches often feel completely one-sided, and instead of having a competitive game where both players have a fair chance of winning, you end up spending 15–20 minutes getting stomped by someone who is clearly playing at a different skill level.

What makes it even more frustrating is that the matchmaking seems to work only one way. I never get matched against players who have 300–400 less Elo than me, but somehow getting matched against players with 300–400 more Elo happens. Why is that?

I understand that AoM: Retold doesn't have the largest player base, and matchmaking may need to expand the Elo range to find opponents. However, I'd much rather wait an extra 4–5 minutes in the queue for a reasonably balanced match than waste 15–20 minutes playing against someone who's in a completely different league.

I genuinely believe matchmaking is one of the major issues contributing to player frustration and potentially to the game's declining player base. A competitive game needs to make players feel that they have a fair chance, even when they lose.

A 100–200 Elo difference is perfectly fine, but anything beyond 200 Elo makes the match feel unfair and unbalanced.

Would you rather wait a few extra minutes for a balanced match, or get into a game quickly against someone with 300–400 more Elo?

I think this is something the developers really need to look into.

Retold The Biggest Event In The History Of The Universe... kinda... sorta. :D

TONIGHT IS FIGHT NIGHT.

This is the event none of you asked for but you’ve all been wanting for a very, very long time! The strategic genius, never played a bad game in his life, all-around fun guy John Arbiter takes on the up-and-comer, community hero, hard-work-first Motaba in a world-first $500 showmatch. The biggest prize pool for a Retold showmatch, if I’m not mistaken, making it the biggest event of its kind ever!?! Sort of... kinda?

Okay, with that out of the way, let’s get to the serious stuff.

Both players are currently rated around 1750, which is pretty high on the ladder. They both play a fairly wide god range. John has recently proved to the world how easy Gaia is by getting to 1900 playing only Gaia. Motaba has not cracked 1800 with anything yet. It is bound to be a cracker of a series, and we don’t get to watch this level very often, so I hope you all join in and enjoy it for what it is.

I will be pointing out mistakes, I will be hyping up big plays, and I will be enjoying the ride, so come join me and the rest of the AoM community to watch these two duke it out.

When: TODAY 1500 GMT
Where: www.twitch.tv/iamboit
OR: www.youtube.com/boittv
Why: ’Cause John is a fairly popular streamer, and Motaba has also thrown his hat in the ring for commentating and streaming. I think that is enough for them to have somewhat of a stage to perform on.

Hope you all enjoy :)

Retold Old Man from Ioklos easter egg in AoM Retold Obsidian Mirror

I was so happy to find the Old Man from Ioklos/Iolcos (that one that appears in the beggining of Fall of Trident/ More Bandits scenario) hidden in a cave in the Obsidian Mirror campaign along with some capybaras!

He is a little bit hidden in a cave, although I am 100% sure a lot of people noticed this already xD but didn't found a post about it (which is understandable, kind of a minor detail. But it's awesome to find these kind of things as easter eggs, because it shows passion with our game from the developers).

I edited the https://ageofempires.fandom.com/wiki/Good_Enough_to_Eat#Trivia with this too.

Does anyone play Age of Mythology Retold on Linux?

I am having trouble with cross play for age of mythology retold on Linux (Ubuntu).

I used to be able to play on Linux just fine. I think the crossplay would automatically sign me in.

Everything was fine and dandy.

Then after September 2026 it stopped working.

This user for AoE2 DE

Describes a similar issue here:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/813780/discussions/3/598526768326946113/

I think I used to get an in-game pop up with a code that allowed me to sign in with my phone.

But now it doesn't do that. For some reason.

Any suggestions?
