Verified Discussion on Rule 2 Language and acceptance of AI translation + AI complain post

Recently the mod team and some user had a quick discussion regarding Rule 2 in our sub. It's a simple rule where all submission (post and comment) must be done in English or Malay. Translation must be given if other languages are used. Dialects such as Kelate etc are usually allowed. Here is the detailed explanation of rule 2:

2. Subreddit language

Posts and comments should be in English or Malay. Feel free to ask for translations; there are many who will be happy to oblige.

Why are other Malaysian languages not allowed such as Chinese, Tamil or Kelantanese?

Have you ever sat at a table where a few people are speaking a language you don't understand and leaving you out of the discussion? While this may be more pleasant for the native speakers, it's bad for the table as a whole. The net quality of discussion decreases. This is a platform for discussion so we prioritise making sure everyone can participate. English and Malay are optimal for achieving this objective as (1) Malay is the national language so everyone educated here can understand it to some degree, and (2) English is the internet lingua franca and widely spoken locally.

What about Jawi script? It's still Malay.

See above. While everyone can read Romanised Malay, a sizeable chunk of Malaysians are not able to read Jawi. Which means allowing it would leave people out of discussions, and this is bad for the subreddit as a whole. So we don't allow Jawi either.

Recently a long time user suggested that we should relax the rule a bit, since Reddit has a build in translation function. Upon testing, said function only works on Reddit app, not in other platform. That is why we will continue to maintain current language barrier.

We also have come across some posts that is not in either Malay or English, but an AI translation was provided. The mod team thinks that AI translation should be allowed as the result from these AI attempts are serviceable in most cases. Of course, if we allowed AI translation, that means we need to address the possibility of allowing Youtube videos that is NOT in English nor Malay, with caption function activated so AI translation is provided. For example, THIS post. English translation is provided as long as CC is activated. That post is currently removed simply because we are still following the old rules.

Speaking of AI, the mod team is also considering whether we should allow post that complains about AI usage in posters or not, such as THIS/THIS (usage of AI from a random company), or THIS (usage of AI in content creation of a random community), or THIS (usage of AI on book covers), or THIS (usage of AI by government agencies). We have been approving every complain about usage of AI for now, but to be fair those posts, especially one that targets random companies, doesn't really pass rule 3 by our standard. It felt more of a quick rant to us. Of course, a discussion post that talks about usage of AI "IN MALAYSIA" is ok, just not a quick picture post that says "fuck AI". The mod team wishes to gather more insight from fellow users before determine how to tackle AI complaining post in the future.

TLDR:

  1. Are you guys ok with allowing non english/malay posts as long as AI translation (including youtube CC) is provided? It might increase the diversity of submission in our sub.
  2. Post that complain about AI usage: How acceptable should we be?

Education Concerns about youth radicalization in Malaysia from a student's perspective

• Upvotes

With the rise of school violence cases in Malaysia - I have started to grow concerned due to my status as a student and the possible risks I could be facing. Not only that - It was recently discovered within my own school that a boy had attempted and failed to stab another student. Due to this, I have started researching about recent school violence cases; notably the notorious ones such as the Bandar Utama case, and the recent case in Kuching. (may the victims of these cases rest in peace.)

While researching, I found a common denominator in both cases - and it is that both perpetrators engage in a online subculture, nameably the true crime community. If you are unaware, the true crime community is a community that idolizes perpetrators of violent crime and school violence such as Adam Lanza, Elliot Rodgers, and so on. Both of the perpetrators mimic the behaviors of these individuals, writing manifestos and making references to school shooters within the community - and adopting white supremacist ideas such as natural selection.

One of the other main ideas of this community is that majority of the individuals within in engage in western radical extremist ideology such as Neo-Nazism and fascism. The reason that this stood out to me is because of the notable rise that I've observed in students engaging in fascist ideology in my own school; with a student even going as far to set their profile picture as the Nazi swastika, this happened previously - yet I never saw anything being done about it, with the student simply changing their profile picture without any consequences. Not only that, a different student yelled out "All Hail Hitler" in class and nobody showed a visible reaction.

This makes me wonder, what could have caused the rise of the amount of youths being radicalized towards western extremist ideology and thought in Malaysia? Am I overreacting? Has this been happening in classrooms of other students in Malaysia? I would like to hear the opinions of other Malaysians regarding this issue.

Environment Pokok telinga ayam, eating a vinegar fly it caught

Drosera spatulata, the spoon-leaved sundew or pokok telinga ayam.

A tiny native carnivorous plant of Malaysia, it is found in damp acidic habitats like heath forests.
Locally it is considered endangered and hard to find.

Like other sundews, it is covered in tentacle-like glands that secrete a sticky mucilage to trap small insects.
It can often multiply rapidly after forest fires.

Environment Racer snails, one of our native freshwater species

Post image

Vittina waigiensis, the red racer snail or siput timba merah.

A small (3 cm) freshwater snail that lives in clean coastal streams with high flow and many rocks. It is not tolerant of turbid water and silt.

It feeds on microalgae, filamentous algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and organic biofilm scraped from hard surfaces using a specialized radula (“tongue”). They are the natural cleaners of their habitat.

They have separate sexes. When their white eggs hatch, the planktonic/veliger larvae wash downstream where they require brackish water to develop.

Their bright colours, peaceful nature and algae-feasting tendencies makes them popular aquarium inhabitants.

Economy & Finance Is Living Alone Worth the Extra Cost, or Is Sharing an Apartment Better?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ll be moving to KL soon for work, and I’m trying to decide whether to rent a room in a shared apartment or get my own studio.

I enjoy cooking and having my own space, but I also want to be practical with my finances and save money.

For those of you who live in KL, especially those who have experience living independently, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Is it better to share an apartment to save money, or is living alone worth the extra cost for privacy and peace of mind?

I’d also like to know how much you typically spend on rent, groceries, and utilities, and whether sharing an apartment has been a good experience for you.

I’m just trying to make the best decision for my budget and lifestyle, so I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thank you!

Others Crypto cards in Malaysia?

Is anyone here using crypto cards in Malaysia? Looking for a way to pay with crypto at regular stores without having to manually convert it to MYR or cash out through an exchange every time. Are there any crypto cards that actually work in Malaysia for everyday stuff like groceries, restaurants or shopping?

Anyone tried this? What's the easiest option?
