Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

Material [OC] A tiny, fast notes app for your terminal inspired by the 80s

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey folks! I built a notes app inspired by the 80s, when software felt simple and snappy.

It launches in 2.6ms. I've taken notes for 10+ years, first in VS Code, then Obsidian. Sometimes I just want to jot down a thought and get back to work.

If you're curious about it, I built a small website for it: https://noted.computer

Give it a go, feedback is welcome! <3

This is where I work and where I spend my free time. I'm currently moving it to Quickshell and dropping Waybar and some rofi menus, so this is the last version with Waybar.

Most of my workflow is through the terminal, this machine is really only used for programming so i apologize for the lack of window variety.

A little pixel-art cat that lives on the desktop and walks over whatever windows are open. In the video it comes out, falls from the top of the screen, chases the cursor, and eats treats I drop for it. It also sleeps in a bed on the bar and reacts to the system (for example, it pants when the CPU runs hot).

Material [OC] Kinjo — a local network browser with a little terminal colour

Hey r/unixporn! I’ve been working on Kinjo, a TUI for discovering local network services and launching actions against them.

I got tired of using Avahi’s CLI tools to list services, then switching to other commands to actually do something with them. I couldn’t find a lightweight terminal alternative that fit that workflow, so I built one in Rust with Ratatui.

The interface uses dark panels, soft blue highlights, muted labels, and colour-coded service types. Tabbed views organize services, hosts, and matching commands, with connection details alongside the list.

Find an SSH server and connect, open a device’s web interface, or launch your own command—all without leaving the terminal.

The colour palette is built in (for now); keybindings and actions are configurable through TOML. Actions can use discovered hostnames, addresses, ports, and TXT data. If several actions match, you choose which one to run.

Try it:

  • Homebrew: brew install abbyssoul/abyss/kinjo
  • Debian/Ubuntu: download the .deb for your architecture from Releases, then run sudo apt install ./kinjo_*.deb
  • Nix: nix run github:abbyssoul/kinjo

On Linux, discovery uses the Avahi daemon, which needs to be running.

Source, configuration examples, and full installation instructions

I’d love feedback on contrast, spacing, information density—and what would help it fit into your terminal setup.

Material [OC] kew music player with winamp style visualizations in the terminal

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi unixporn,

We haven't posted updates about kew for a long time, but this time it's special. Because with kew 4.4.2 you can have projectM/Milkdrop visualizations via a plugin right in the terminal.

We have also fixed a lot of bugs in kew that emerged after we rewrote the UI completely, and now have no open bugs.

I also want to point out that you can make your own layouts in kew now.

You can try an alternate kew layout by renaming ~/.config/kew/layouts/alt.layout to current.layout

We haven't seen a lot of people trying this and would love to hear feedback on layout editing too see where it might need improvements.

Screenshot [OC] Built a lightweight extension to theme GitHub with Catppuccin, Tokyo Night, and frosted glass

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I built a lightweight, zero-dependency browser extension called **Theme Studio for GitHub** to bring popular community palettes and aesthetic customizations directly to GitHub.

### Features

- 12 Curated Themes: Catppuccin Mocha, Tokyo Night, Dracula Pro, Cyberpunk 2077, Midnight OLED, Nordic Frost, Matrix Terminal, and more.

- Glassmorphism & Wallpaper Engine: 14 built-in vector wallpapers or custom uploads, with real-time sliders for blur diffusion (0-30px) and surface transparency.

- Full Code Syntax Recoloring: Works across both GitHub Classic (PrettyLights) and modern React Monaco code views.

- Contribution Graph Palettes: Custom heatmap colors (Electric Glacier, Matrix Phosphor, Sakura Petals, Royal Amethyst, Crimson Blood).

- Clean Focus Mode: Quick keyboard shortcut (Alt + Shift + F) to toggle off backgrounds for screen sharing and meetings.

### Technical Details

- Pure Vanilla JS and CSS (no bundlers, no node_modules, zero external dependencies).

- Manifest V3 compliant.

- CSS variables injected at document_start for zero layout shift (CLS).

- Handles GitHub Turbo / SPA page transitions automatically.

Source Code & Setup:

Feedback and PRs are welcome.
