History | ისტორია Georgia and Armenia seem like natural allies, yet their relationship isn't particularly close today. What are the main historical and political reasons for this? I'm from Greece, so I'm not very familiar with the region's history.

TL;DR: Why Georgia is growing

  • Services boom: IT/communications (+26%), transport (+19%), arts and entertainment (+16.1%), healthcare (+13.8%) and finance (+10.1%) drive the growth, while agriculture and construction shrank

Anyone hiked Chalaadi Glacier near Mestia recently? (Late October)

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!
I’m currently travelling around Georgia and planning to head up to Mestia.
I’m interested in hiking to Chalaadi Glacier, but I’m aware it’s getting towards winter and conditions might not be ideal.
Has anyone completed the hike recently, particularly in the last week or so? Just wondering what the trail conditions are like, whether there’s much snow or ice, and if it’s still realistically doable at this time of year.

Also, is anyone planning to do the hike in the next week or so ? Would be happy to potentially tag along
Any recent experiences or advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I don't like new school changes.

I entered 9th grade in 15th September and they made it more easy to get phones. Its really easy to open the box way. Changing to 11th grade system is bad too. Know i have to learn old georgian in 9th grade it used to be in 10th grade. And some of the new school books are too awful they ware very rushed. What do you all think about the changes? I wish I was born few years before so I didn't have to deal with this changes.

Language | ენა I made an app to learn Georgian, with my grandpa as the teacher

გამარჯობა!

I'm Georgian, a solo Android dev and a student in the EU. I learned English from zero just by watching anime with subtitles for 4 years, so this year I built an app that teaches Chinese the same way: real videos, and you tap any word you don't know.

While building it I realized I wanted to make the country I was born in proud. Georgian has its own alphabet and its own language family, and there's still no Duolingo for it. So I built one for Georgian. It's called Kakhi, after my grandpa, a proud Georgian.

In the app he's the one teaching you: a cartoon grandpa who pulls up a chair and says gaumarjos when you hit your goals (the video is his intro).

How it works:

- 550+ short videos from Georgian YouTubers: cooking, markets, travel, everyday talk

- Georgian subtitles with romanization over every word and English under every line

- tap any word: what it means in that sentence, its dictionary form, and what the ending does (-ში = in)

- Kakhi says every word out loud, slowly too

- watching is free, no account (there's an optional Premium for unlimited look-ups and flashcards)

It's on Google Play as "Kakhi: Learn Georgian" (Android).

Honest bits: Android only for now, and the app itself is in English. I'm sure you'll find mistakes in the subtitles; tell me and I'll fix them. And if one of the videos is yours and you'd rather it wasn't in the app, say so and it's gone.

I honestly don't know how many people want to learn Georgian, but I'm proud of this one. Any comments are welcome, especially from native speakers. The mods kindly said it's OK to share the link, so here it is (it only went live today, so Google Play search doesn't show it yet): https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kakhi.app

გაუმარჯოს!

Edit: so many of you asked for iPhone that I'm building it now (aiming for november). I added a small waitlist: leave your email here https://plyerstudios.com/kakhi (the box under the Google Play button) and you'll get exactly one email, on the day Kakhi is on iPhone. After that email I delete the whole list. No newsletter, no ads, never shared and you can ask me to remove your address any time.

English books

Trying to find these books in English while on my trip:

Hard by a Great Forest by Leo Vardiashvili or The Eighth Life by Nino Haratischwili

I went to Prospero’s, but they do not have them in stock. If you have any ideas where they may be in stock I would appreciate them! :)

a gap year - Georgian student life

Well, firstly, I graduated from school with a gold medal and decided to pursue a degree in psychology. Shortly after I started university, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and I decided to take an academic leave for a year. I was also working at the time, and it was difficult for me to balance work and studies.

After that, I changed jobs several times, working in customer support and payment processing roles. I gained a lot of experience and earned a good amount of money along the way. However, I couldn't return to university because of my debts and loans.

Five years have passed since I took that break from my studies. This year, I decided to change my major to business administration and management. I'm currently in my third week, and I already feel exhausted because I'm working and studying at the same time.

People study to get jobs like mine, and I already have one. I want to quit university again and rethink my major because I'm not sure whether I'm genuinely interested in it. I also don't have much time to study.

I can't quit my job because I need it financially, and doing so would cause me problems. I work from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., while my lectures and seminars are scheduled early in the morning. I've even had to study during working hours, which has negatively affected my performance at work.

Please, what are your thoughts? I'm worried about quitting university again, and I feel like I haven't really tried hard enough to balance everything. However, it feels impossible.

I'd appreciate it if you could share your objective thoughts...

Fighting for the proper name of Sakartvelo

Post image
43 Upvotes

I've been trying to add and keep the line "also known as Sakartvelo" for English wikipedia page about the country of Sakartvelo. I need your help to make it stay.

My edit using multiple sources calling it as it is was removed on the following grounds:
"unless you can cite reliable sources, who uses Sakartvelo in English? traveline-tourism.com and harbourfrontcentre.comaren't reliable sources"

In order for it to stay i need to gather academic sources openly calling Sakartvelo it's native name in English sentences. I've already found one basic in Encyclopaedia Britannica ("Also known as: Sakartvelo, Sakartvelos Respublika") but i'm pretty sure wikipedia mods won't allow this one to be used so i request your help to defend the dignity of this country

Hispanic family looking to move to Georgia (good idea?)

Hi! Me ( F,23 American peruvian) and my husband (M,26 Colombian) are looking to move to Georgia for a better life with our son. Will this be a good plan? Are Georgian’s welcoming? Is it easy to find work and housing?

In Georgia, is there "male loneliness epidemic", like in Western countries?

According to stats 63% of men between 18 and 30 are single in America, while for women the number is 34%. Also many guys don't have male friends too and some struggle with getting job as well, living neet lifestyle. More people live with their parents in their 20s than before and longer, because many find getting a house unaffordable. Many men are socially isolated these days. In countries like UK and USA gen z women now outearn gen z men and gen z men are more likely to be neet. I wonder how is situation in Georgia. On one hand, Georgia is a traditional country on social issues like marriage and monogamy, man is a provider in a relationship and women tend to assume feminine role, on the other hand, dating apps are avaliable in Georgia too and women work as men. So I wonder how is situation in Georgia? Is there thing such as "male loneliness epidemic", "blackpilled culture" and etc. in Georgia, or are trends different? Do men increasingly struggle with dating, getting friends, job and etc.?

Question | კითხვა What’s considered normal between male and female friends in Georgia?

I’m a woman from an English speaking country and I’ve noticed that Georgians tend to be more affectionate and emotionally expressive in both platonic friendships and romantic relationships.

I’m dating a Georgian man, and sometimes I find it difficult to distinguish between what is normal friendliness in Georgian culture and what might be considered flirting or crossing a boundary in a relationship.

For example, a man sending heart emojis or complimenting his female friends by commenting “beautiful” etc on their pictures seems relatively normal and acceptable in Georgia, whereas in my country this isnt common and could easily be interpreted as flirting.

So what kinds of affection or behaviour between men and women are considered completely normal between platonic friends? And are there certain behaviours that would generally be seen as inappropriate or as red flags when someone is in a relationship?

I want to visit Georgia and understand what and do there etc

გამარჯობა

I'm an Argentine American who is obsessed with Georgia and I wanted to visit there it's in my bucket list..

I have many questions and pretty much many topics to ask

If I arrive to Tbilisi would they deport me if I'm with an Argentine and an American passport?? Cuz I've seen situations in the news or internet that tbilisi airport had deported people I wasn't sure if being American and Argentine would be a problem in Georgia or not..

And also since I'm in here I really want to make a friend that can help me guide through tbilisi and gori kutaisi and batumi , if so then dm me plz

And last question I know it's an odd one but I have autism and I'm not too sure how georgians would react I'm not severe but more independent and knowing my way in life, I ask because if I don't get mistreated in georgia or any areas anything like that

Anyways like I said dm me if u have any questions ;)

დიდი მადლობა
