Other How to read and understand a github repository or open source

34 Upvotes

I have been trying to do a research and build a software on a particular filed by trying to do read the existing open source available in the github some of them have good readme and some of them don't have a good readme which make it hard to understand about the repo and how it works and opening all the files reading the code is hassle so what should be my approach while i try to understand a project done by others. Not even for this one particular research anytime if iam trying to read a open source how should i approach it

Other How do I break out of the "intermediate dev limbo" before giving up again?

14 Upvotes

How do I break out of the "intermediate dev limbo" before giving up again? I am past the beginner stage, understanding basic syntax up to classes and objects, but I freeze when it's time to structure projects on my own. I have relentlessly searched for methods, tutorials, and books to guide me to the next level, but I can never find anything that clicks; because of this, I've jumped from language to language, and every time I hit this "limbo," I end up quitting and trying something else, yet I always come back because something inside tells me I’m meant to code. For those who have overcome this block, what architecture or design books do you recommend, what kind of practical exercises changed the game for you, and what real strategies actually work to finally break through this barrier and build confidence?

Other Recursion is hard for me to wrap my brain around

function maxDepth(root: TreeNode | null): number {
if(root == null) {
return 0;
}

let leftDepth = maxDepth(root.left)
let rightDepth = maxDepth(root.right)

return 1 + Math.max(leftDepth, rightDepth)
};

I made this super simple program for leetcode 104, but I have a really hard time in the "think how a program can do what i want phase" to think about a function calling itself I understand it from a top down view

basically just cloning and nesting the function in itself, but its really hard to think about,

when i started this I was thinking how do i write a program that can search in 1 direction count to the end and then start over. which ended up not working.

Other Trying to get a job and become a really good developer (without Ai) looking for tips or help

18 Upvotes

I am really into programming, I do it every day, I love every part of of this, I use nvim, arch, and I want to become one of the good ones, I coded some web apps, I coded a very basic physics engine, backend apps, frontend, currently learning n8n and coding an cli tool that provides utilities for developers.

I'm telling all of this because I want you to understand my perspective, I didn't gent into this because I thought it was easy money or because of ai, like 6 years ago I completed a technical study in computers programming, but at that time my life was upside down so I just got back into the tech world like 1 year ago and have been programming most days since then.

But to every job offer I'm competing with people with 5+ years of experience, I don't think I am a bad developer and In fact I think I have great potential because I want to learn more, but I lack real world experience, I have just developed portfolio proyects that nobody will use probably.

I don't have friends or people around that I can share my interest about code with, so I feel kind of lonely in this.

I would really accept some recommendations, tips, help or just hearing your experiences if you have been through a similar situation.

I know there are developers doing a lot of code with just ai slop already inside the industry, what can I do if I want to catch up to them while trying to be actually good?

Other How do you learn DevOps/cloud without a credit card?

4 Upvotes

I’m currently trying to learn the basics of DevOps, things like Docker, AWS, GCP, CI/CD, Kubernetes, etc.

Docker and the local tools are easy enough to practice, but when it comes to cloud platforms like AWS and GCP, a credit card is often required to create an account or access certain services.

I currently don’t have a credit card, so I’m wondering: What’s the best way to learn AWS/GCP without one? Would appreciate any recommendations from people who learned cloud without having a credit card. 🙌

Other Sophomore CS student feeling completely lost and looking for a structured roadmap or expert advice to rebuild my fundamentals

16 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm currently a sophomore Computer Science student, and lately I've been feeling like I've fallen far behind. I passed my introductory programming courses Python, C, C++, Java/OOP but over time I feel like I've forgotten almost everything because I rarely used those concepts consistently. One thing I've realized about myself is that I learn best with routine and structure. I don't do well jumping between random YouTube videos or constantly changing resources. I'd much rather have one high quality source for a topic, study it consistently every day, solve exercises, and gradually build my understanding.

So I have a few questions:

If you could start over as a sophomore, how would you rebuild your CS fundamentals?

What would your roadmap look like over the next 1 year of dense study?

What resources books, courses, websites would you choose for DSA, Operating Systems Computer Networks Computer Architecture Databases Linux Cybersecurity (just enough to understand the field before specializing).

How do you deal with forgetting? I constantly feel like I learn something, then months later I can't remember enough to use it confidently. Is this normal? How do experienced engineers retain knowledge without trying to memorize everything?

Is it realistic. or even useful, to aim for a broad understanding of all the major CS areas before specializing? Or should I focus deeply on one area much earlier?

I see NeetCode recommended everywhere, but it seems heavily focused on coding interviews and LeetCode. Is that actually a good place to build CS fundamentals, or is it mainly interview preparation? Should I first study algorithms from a textbook/course before using NeetCode?

If you've ever felt behind and successfully caught up, I'd really appreciate hearing what worked for you. I'm especially interested in advice from people who felt "late" compared to their peers but eventually became competent engineers.

Thanks in advance.

Other Help in flutter

1 Upvotes

Hi! I’m a newbie in programming, and I need some help with reading MP3 metadata in Flutter.

I’m making a Flutter music player for both mobile and web, and I want it to automatically read the MP3 file’s metadata,

including:

- Album cover/cover art

- Artist name

- Song title

I don’t want to rely on the fallback map I created because I want the information to be retrieved directly from the MP3 file.

The MP3 files contain ID3v2.3 metadata, including the album cover, artist name, and song title.

The problem is that when I run the app on my Android phone emulator, it successfully reads the metadata. However, when I run the same app on Chrome (Flutter Web), it doesn’t work.

I have imported flutter_media_metadata_plus.dart, and I also use KisWeb.
The function I’m using to load the metadata is an async method called loadMetadata, with the declaration:

Future<void> loadMetadata(String assetPath) async

Does anyone know how I can properly read the MP3 metadata and cover art when running Flutter Web on Chrome without breaking or changing the existing behavior on my mobile emulator?

I can provide my loadMetadata() function and any other relevant code if needed.

Other i want to wipe the terminal after asking questions in kotlin

3 Upvotes

So I'm new to Kotlin, and I'm trying to make a guess the number game for terminal and I wanted to make a little text intro and clear the console after, but I haven't been able to do it. I found some ways to do it but not as I want to.

Because when you do the clear command in the terminal, it wipes the whole thing, and you can't go back, but when I use commands like "print("\u001b[H\u001b[2J")" or "System.out.flush()" it is like it just pushes the view down; it doesn't really wipe the terminal, it just pushes the text up.

I wanted to know how or if it's even possible to do it. I don't know if it might be helpful, but I use Windows 11 and PowerShell (7.6.5).

Also, in another topic, I want to hear if there's a better way to try my code because right now I'm doing kotlinc .\file-name.kt -include-runtime -d .\file-name.jar && java -jar .\file-name.jar

Other How do I know what a library does, what functions exist within that library and how to even use them?

0 Upvotes

As a beginner, I can't read the source code that contains complex c++ code, I simply want to know what a library does (for example: openCV deals with computer vision, so images and videos) and I want to know what functions exist within that library and what it does in plain english (example: imshow() displays an image or video feed, you need to arguments, a name for the display tab and what you are actually displaying). I don't want to use AI because I want to know about the process of going about this.

Other Advice on OCR Extraction With Merged Cells

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m working on a system that extracts prayer-time tables from PNGs and PDFs and converts them into a clean text/JSON format. The main issue I’m running into is merged cells.

In these tables, some values apply across multiple rows. For example, an iqamah time might be shown once in a tall merged cell, but it should apply to every day/row that the merged cell covers. The problem is that most OCR/table-extraction approaches I’ve tried either treat the rows inside that merged region as empty, or they correctly read the first few rows but fail once the time changes because they don’t understand the actual cell boundaries.

The merged-cell text is also not always perfectly centered, which makes it harder to infer which rows it belongs to. I’ve tried writing my own extraction logic and even using AI models, but the results are inconsistent, especially on more extreme examples like the image attached.

What I’m trying to figure out is the best way to reliably detect the table grid, understand merged cell regions, and assign each merged value to the correct rows.

Has anyone built something like this before, or does anyone know a good approach/library for handling OCR table extraction with merged cells accurately? I’m especially interested in ideas for combining OCR with image processing, grid detection, or post-processing logic

Example of table: https://imgur.com/a/5ZlUxsr

Other Looking for a lightweight CLI template program to prevent leaking secrets in config files

3 Upvotes

Let's say I've got a file, config.ini, that looks like this

conf [foo] BAR = public_value BAZ = super_secret_value QUX = another_public_value

At some point I might want to edit it, and I also might want to check it into a git repo. Having Super_Secret_Value in my repo could cost me \$148M, so I don't want to do that.

Instead, what I would like to do is create two files, config.secrets, which does [not]{.underline} get checked into git, and config_template.ini, which does.

Ideally, config.secrets would look something like

conf BAZ_SECRET_VALUE = super_secret_value

and config_template.ini would look like

conf [foo] BAR = public_value BAZ = {% BAZ_SECRET_VALUE %} QUX = another_public_value

Perhaps this is even the case for numerous 「name_i」_template.「ext」 and 「name_i」.secrets files, in which case I could have a simple shell script like this:

``` shell
! /usr/bin/env bash
process_secrets.sh
for template in _template. do base="${template/_template/}" ext="${template/_template./}" secrets="$base.secrets" 「template_processor」 "$template" "$secrets" --delimiters="{% %}" \ > "$base.$ext" done ```
where I could then copy process_secrets.sh to 「repo」/.git/hooks/post-commit, post-checkout, and post-merge (at least that's what it seems like I should do based on the gitinfo2 package for LaTeX). (Note: I know I'd have to include config.ini and the 「name_i」.「ext」 in .gitignore.)
My question boils down to this: what's the standard solution for this 「template_processor」 that I assume must exist? Ideally it would be something written in bash, or there's some C or Rust binary for *nix I can get on Homebrew, apt, pacman, etc. I'm trying to not reinvent the wheel here, but if there isn't a "standard" solution, I suppose I can try to roll my own.
Other What's a good language to build desktop applications for Mac?
0 Upvotes
Hello. I didn't see specific advice in the FAQ for desktop apps in Mac, so I'm asking here.
What's a good language to learn to develop desktop apps for Mac? I'm planning to do a very simple app for automating changing the names of some image files that I handle on my job.
I think the only thing the app would do is ask for a folder to scan and a string to append to the file's name, and then modify the name of every JPG file in the folder.
What would be the best language for creating apps with UIs on Mac to do this?
