Need Support A TikTok challenge traumatized me. Now I cry randomly, can't sleep without meds, and am becoming scared of the night.
The goddamn challenge where they kick doors down or whatever went viral in our town. So a few nights ago these two kids, well older high schoolers, got dressed up in all black with ski masks and came to our door at 1 am. They started to slam at our front door. Our dogs went wild. I grabbed my phone to check the cameras and seeing two people in ski masks doing all that screamed for my husband call 911. I won't go into further detail than that because I don't want to be unnecessarily triggering to anyone else but cops showed up and caught them standing around at the end of the street still dressed like burglars like the dipshits they are. They hopped a fence and did some other stuff that made everything worse for themselves so they were arrested and racked up charges.
That night the officer told me all that and said I should be able to go get some sleep because it wasn't like they could come back any time soon and by the looks of it this has probably scared them straight. My logic brain knows that. The rest of my brain hasn't seemed to have gotten the memo. I know it was kids not some harden criminal with a long rap sheet. I know it was a TikTok challenge and not someone's planned violent scheme. I know home invasions are actually incredibly rare against random individuals. That stupid panic chunk of my brain just won't get on board and it's killing me.
My psych has prescribed a short course of Klonopin to help me sleep which is helping. I had a therapy session immediately after and it helped too but maybe not enough? I just randomly start crying now. No trigger. Just hanging out, maybe playing a video game or maybe doing my laundry then bam, sobbing. This morning it was drinking my coffee. Sobbing uncontrollably for no reason. Life usually feels relatively normal outside of the sudden waterworks as long as the sun is up. The moment it gets dark out, I'm tense to put it lightly. Every single sound has me jumpy. I close my eyes and see the ski masks glancing into into the camera.
I have supportive and loving people in my life so I'm not alone. My husband has been fantastic in this. He hasn't experienced the same reaction but he doesn't diminish my experience nonetheless. My friends have been caring as well. I just don't want to lean to heavily on all these people and exhaust them. I'm sorry. This was maybe too much of a ramble but... Yeah. How do stop letting this shitty TikTok "prank" fuck my life up? How do I reclaim my space? How do I stop the 5-10 minute sob sessions that just interrupt my day? Are there special places I can go to find these skills?
