Welcome to this week's Question thread. This thread has replaced the regular Tuesday Noob Questions thread. We encourage you to as all your questions here, as this will help us cut down on the number of repetitive posts we get on the front page! This thread is linked with the #questions channel on our Discord so that any time someone posts a new comment in here, it will be reviewed and replied to quickly! If you felt like you had a question but didn't want to bother people with it, now's your chance.

As always, we also have a discord for hoggit over at http://discord.gg/hoggit which you can use for chatting with other members of the hoggit community. And don't forget to check out our wiki at http://wiki.hoggitworld.com

Hoggit Training Server runs a training MP mission that runs 24/7 that's focuses on training up the newer folks (just like this weekly thread). Every DCS module is available in this mission, and there are numerous ranges to test your skills at. There are frequently knowledgeable folks around to answer any questions you might have, or show you how to do what it is you're looking to learn. Anyone can join, even if you've never stepped foot in a MP session before.

If you're interested in teaching/instructing at hoggit, please poke squinkys on Discord!

Server is be named Hoggit - Training Map. The password is hoggit1fw. SRS will be available at tnn.hoggitworld.com (it should autoconnect, but if not, use that). Come in, have a good time, learn a few things and teach a few things.

The only rule is Do not teamkill, unless the other party is a willing combatant...ie: you can dogfight if you find a partner...just don't shoot down some random A-10 trying to learn how to land.

F-16 Relative JDAM Targeting has finally been added!

Thumbnail digitalcombatsimulator.com
48 Upvotes

DCS: F-16C by Eagle Dynamics

Added: JDAM Absolute Targeting/Relative Targeting switching logic.

When in PRE mode, Absolute Targeting is enabled and will use pure GPS navigation to fly to the target coordinates uploaded from the aircraft, provided the bomb time-of-flight is sufficient to acquire GPS signals (>24 seconds) to perform a course correction prior to impact.

When in VIS mode, Relative Targeting is enabled and will use the physical target location based on aircraft sensor position, which may differ from the target coordinates displayed in the cockpit when there are differences between the INS navigation solution and the GPS position.

Known Issue: Absolute Targeting is always enabled in PRE mode, even though a sensor in track mode or applying a cursor slew should enable Relative Targeting.

DCS OH-58 Startup panel

I posted the start of this a week ago asking for any other related projects. I just finished this and think it came out decently for my first button box type project.
Any missing switches from the startup sequence are covered by a macro on my stream deck I couldn’t keep adding more to this and the current layout gets me flying with only the panel and my collective.

Joystick ffb or not

Just getting into flight sims mainly dcs, I’m currently using a thrustmaster warthog but have been intrigued by the moza ab9. I have seen some local deals on marketplace for winctrl and virpil as well.

What is the general consensus in the flight sims community, are ffb joysticks worth it or should I go for something smoother like the virpil?

DCS F2P Onboarding Strategy: The Rotary Dynamic

Post image
18 Upvotes

A significant disparity exists in the onboarding experience between fixed-wing and rotary-wing entrants into DCS World. While fixed-wing enthusiasts benefit from several official free-to-play aircraft, including the TF-51D, Su-25T, and the forthcoming T-38 Talon—potential helicopter pilots have zero official free options. This forces new rotary-wing users to immediately invest premium dollars into a complex module or rely on community-made modifications, such as the popular OH-6A Loach or UH-60L Blackhawk. These mods, while valuable, often lack access to critical SDK features necessary for full high-fidelity implementation.

To address this significant barrier to entry, the introduction of an official, free-to-play trainer helicopter is strategically necessary. The proposed TH-67A Creek (a military variant of the civilian Bell 206B Jetranger III) represents an ideal solution. The TH-67A features relatively simple systems compared to the CH-47F, AH-64D, or the Ka-50. Developing this low-complexity, high-fidelity module would allow new players to focus solely on mastering the basics of rotary flight maneuvers and physics without being overwhelmed by weapons systems and complex avionics.

An official free trainer would act as a crucial conversion funnel catalyst. A player who successfully masters the basics via the TH-67A significantly derisks their financial decision to subsequently purchase complex modules like the AH-64D Apache or the Mi-24P Hind. This structured progression, moving from a beginner friendly—free trainer to a complex paid module—increases the likelihood of converting free users into paid module owners. This ensures the long-term health of the rotary-wing market segment. Critically, as one community member once said, "a good trainer creates good pilots… and good customers."

As a stretch goal, complementing this trainer initiative is the proposition of a new US-based terrain module: Fort Rucker, Alabama, the traditional "Home of Army Aviation." A Fort Rucker map would tap into a strong sense of familiarity and nostalgia for a large segment of the core audience, offering a visually contrasting biome compared to the established desert terrain of Nevada.

Thanks for the feedback! My free A-10 browser sim now supports joysticks and gamepads

Thanks to everyone who checked out my free A-10A browser simulator and shared feedback! One of the biggest requests was better keyboard controls, and I've been wanting to implement joystick and gamepad support too. So, I spent the last couple nights overhauling the control system, and it's officially live on a10simulator.com! Really cool to see the flight model working well under direct control.

Here's a quick overview:

You can now choose how you want to fly under Settings > Controls:

  • Basic: Original mouse-steering controls, now with optional WASD/QE overrides for pitch, roll, and yaw.
  • Keyboard + Free Look: Fly with WASD/QE while using the mouse to look around freely.
  • Manual (Mouse + Keyboard): Mouse acts as a virtual joystick. Hold Space to look around.
  • Manual (Gamepad): Xbox-style controllers with dual-stick flight and camera controls, bumper rudders, and trigger weapons.
  • Manual (Joystick): Support for flight sticks like the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, including twist rudder, throttle slider, and hat switch. Axes can be manually assigned but lots of room for improvement here...

The three manual modes now support loops, barrel rolls, inverted flight, and unrestricted maneuvering, with a camera that rolls with the aircraft.

There's still some built-in flight assistance to keep things approachable, including flight-path stabilization and stall protection. It's not DCS-level but it's a huge realism upgrade over the original point-and-steer controls.

Notes:

  • [I] now starts the engines (E is used for yaw).
  • [V] deploys flares.
  • Shift/Ctrl throttle control is available in fullscreen on Chrome/Edge. Mouse-wheel throttle still works everywhere.
  • Flight School continues to use the original Basic controls so newcomers can learn without the added complexity.

If you have a joystick or gamepad lying around, I'd love to hear how it feels! I haven't flown the Warthog in DCS (or in real life unfortunately) so I don't have much to compare against. Feedback on control sensitivity, axis mapping and flight behavior is especially welcome.

Is a VKB gladiator + head tracking (Not dedicated throttle) enough for a good DCS experience ?

Hello, I currently have a premium VKB gladiator and I'm looking to get into DCS. I've been eyeing getting a STECS but it's too expensive at the moment and I plan to get it way later in 2027. My question be would the VKB gladiator and head tracking be good enough for a good experience in DCS ?

Thanks :)

MISSION-EDITING Case III IFLOLS/Carrier lights brightness in VR

We are stumped on this one. Testing Case III on our squadron server and for VR users the boat is blindingly bright within about 2 miles. It’s nearly impossible to make out anything on the screen.

The odd thing is when I tested Saturday night this wasn’t an issue but the last two attempts have been near impossible. I looked around for threads on the forum and found several instances of vr users reporting the same about 16 months ago but no fixes ever appeared to be made and it seems maybe the topic/issue was either solved or abandoned and accepted.

Has anyone dealt with the spotlight in the face for vr users at night or found a work around?

DCS DCSMyWay – a free waypoint transfer tool inspired by TheWay: one exe, it reads your displays while it types, Apache routes and threat rings

Hi all,

I'd like to share DCSMyWay, a free Windows app that takes the points you pick on the F10 map and types them into your aircraft for you.

First things first: this project is inspired by the fantastic DCS TheWay by aronCiucu. TheWay showed everyone how simple waypoint entry could be, and DCSMyWay's button sequences were ported from its code. Huge thanks to its author and contributors. If your aircraft isn't supported by DCSMyWay yet, keep using TheWay; both apps can run at the same time.

About AI, because someone will ask: yes, DCSMyWay was built with the help of Claude. I've been programming professionally for more than 30 years, and this is not "vibe coding": I designed it, reviewed every line, tested it in the cockpit and fixed plenty of bugs by hand. AI is here and it isn't going away. I'd rather use it as a tool than pretend it doesn't exist. Judge the app by whether it works for you.

What's different

- One exe, nothing to install. Download it and run it. It installs and updates its own DCS scripts, and adds its line to Export.lua (with a backup) without touching the lines of SimShaker, WinWing, TelemFFB and friends.

- It never types blind. On the Hornet, A-10, Apache, Ka-50 and Mirage F1EE it reads the cockpit displays before every step and reads each waypoint back after entering it. If something doesn't respond, it stops and tells you exactly what happened.

- It knows what's already in the jet. Each waypoint gets a checkmark once it's confirmed in the cockpit. Add more later and only the new ones are sent. Or pick "Overwrite from" or "Add after" the active steerpoint.

- Apache, properly: exact MGRS, waypoints added to the TSD route (not just stored as points), and targets with threat types (SA-8, SA-15, 2S6, ZSU-23-4…) so the TSD draws their threat rings on the attack phase.

- Crosshair inside DCS (multi-monitor and WinWing friendly), and your route drawn on the F10 map as you build it (in single player or when you host; as a multiplayer client the mission runs on the server, so there's no map to draw on)

- Global shortcuts: show the crosshair, add, delete, transfer or clear without leaving DCS. They work with joystick buttons mapped to keys too, and show a short message in DCS.

Supported aircraft: F-16C, F/A-18C, A-10C / A-10C II, AH-64D (pilot and CPG), Ka-50 / Ka-50 III and Mirage F1EE.

Not yet: AV-8B, F-15E, M-2000C and OH-58D.

Download: DCSMyWay.exe

Guide and screenshots: github.com/paladin2005/DCSMyWay

It's a beta (0.1.0), so please report anything odd on GitHub. The exe isn't signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen will warn you the first time (More info → Run anyway).

Fly safe!

DCS UH-1H Huey updated with reduced power?

I'm just getting back into DCS after about a year and half due to moving and whatnot. I had completed about half of the Paradise Lost campaign, which I loved because I had read Guts and Gunships and a bunch of the missions in the campaign were lifted straight out of that book.

Anyway, I got my HOTAS, pedals, and TrackIR setup and re-did the tutorial missions, which is where the rubber meets the road. I tried to do the weapons tutorial, but I just could not get the bird off the ground. (the skids literally wouldn't leave the ground) I knew from flying in paradise lost that you can really weigh down the huey and it'll take a running hover taxi to get off the ground sometimes when fully loaded. But I thought it was a fluke and loaded up the first mission of the Argo campaign.

You start the first mission on the back of a ship, completely empty, no hardpoints, no guns, no cargo and I couldn't do an OGE hover. I basically fell off the back of the ship into ground effect and did a running takeoff inches from the surface.

Has there been an update to the Huey or is this just a skill issue and I'm missing something big? I've tried googling my issues, but I'm not coming up with anything.

Update: I double checked my controls and my throttle is split with collective on one side and throttle on the other. I had them connected with sliding piece of metal so if fact as I was increasing collective I was reducing throttle.

A-10A combat flight sim that runs in your browser

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been working on this in my spare time for the last few months and it's finally ready to share. It's a love letter to one of my favorite aircraft, inspired by the combat flight sims I grew up playing in the late '90s and early 2000s.

It's set on a 1:1 scale recreation of part of the Barry M. Goldwater Range in Arizona (my home state), with custom flight physics, Mavericks, Sidewinders, the GAU-8, and a handful of combat missions.

Obviously nowhere near DCS in terms of fidelity, but I did a ton of research and tried to make the flight and combat as realistic and immersive as possible. Hopefully it'll appeal to anyone who doesn't have the time or hardware for DCS, or who just wants a more approachable introduction to combat flight simulation.

Completely free to play (desktop w/ mouse & keyboard): https://a10simulator.com

All feedback welcome!

I overlaid the missing airbases on the Pakistan side that were used at various times during the Russo-Afghan conflict as well as the recent ISAF vs Taliban conflict, on the area that is already present on the DCS Afghanistan map. The most important of which is Peshawar.

Building a PC for DCS World VR on a €1,200 Budget – Need Advice

Hey everyone! I'm planning to build a new PC specifically for DCS World, and my main goal is to play in VR. I'm probably going to use a Pico 4 headset because it's relatively affordable, has pancake lenses, and offers good resolution compared to the Meta Quest 3S.

I live in Germany, and my total budget is around €1,100–1,200 maximum. I'll be looking for most of my components on the used market to get the best performance for my money.

Here's what I'm currently considering: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X – around €100 GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 10GB – around €400 RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz – around €200 That leaves me with roughly €300–500 for the motherboard, PSU, SSD, and potentially other components.

I'm open to suggestions, especially regarding the motherboard and PSU. I'd also like to know whether this setup would be good enough for a decent VR experience in DCS World or if there are any changes you'd recommend within my budget.

QUESTION How to see wingman on the HMD?

Hi I'm playing DCS with a friend and we're new to the F/A-18.

So I was wondering how could we be able to see eachother through the HMD. As far as I know, we need to turn on both D/L and IFF and then select my wingman through the SA page using the TDC, where I can assign him a letter? Also set the MIDS to like 100nm too? Like I know the basics but idk if I'm missing something. Is there anything I'm missing? What would the steps be?

Thank you!

DCS INS alignment fail after second cold start in Mirage F1 EE

Hello,

I don't find a solution by myself for my problem, so here is it :

If I'm slot in the F1 EE in a cold start, I don't have any problem. The INS alignment will works perfectly.
But if I turn off the plane and then do a new cold start, the INS alignment will not finish and always fails when it reaches 20% approximately. It happens in ALCM, ALR or ALN alignment.

I tried by updating my present position in standby/VEI or directly with the thumbleweed placed on the alignment mode I will use before launching the alignment (I don't know if that can have an influence). But everytime I get the same result.

Perhaps I am doing something wrong, or I haven't understood how it works/it should be use, but I can't find what. I'm doing it as the same way I did the first time, but it fails. It's a bit frustrating :/

Thanks in advance !
