A friend of mine has asked me to watch the season 3 of Helluva Boss since he didn't want to go through his Stockholm Syndrome alone, so I agreed. First off, it has been ass but that is for another day. What concerns me here is Vassago. This motherfucker is representing of every single issue I have with most of these types of chatacters and my most recent hate sink.
I'M SO TIRED ON THE FUCK ASS STEREOTYPE OF US BEING "LOVERS", "PASSIONATE ENOUGH TO STEAL YOUR GIRL/HUSBAND" AND "HOT" LIKE IF WE ARE JUST GOOD TO BE SEX TOYS FOR GRINGOS WHO DON'T SEE US AS HUMAN BEINGS WITH OUR OWN INTERESTS OUTSIDE OF BEING ATTRACTIVE, OR CHEERY, OR ALWAYS BEING INTO "FIESTAS"!!
We are also always depicted on the same skin tone, despite there being a variety. When was the last or even first time you ever saw a white Latino in media? Or a black latino? Or an Asian-descent latino? And what about the mixing there? Or curly haired latino? Or latinos with blonde or light brown hair? Or not curvatious/muscular? Or at least a diferent shade of brown that wasn't the one of a paper bag? Little to none, right?
And why is it always us Mexican or Brazilian, and Colombian if they are feeling "nice"? When are we getting Peruvian representation? Or Chilean rep? Or Argentinan, Bolivian or Guatemalan? Answer is absolutely NEVER because the fucking gringos don't know how to check on a god dammed map, and the few cases they acknowledge anyone else, they immediately default to Mexico because fuck the history and culture of those countries.
And even then they don't even care enough to actually learn about our history. No gringo who has never gone to our country but proudly claims to be "Latinx" (which is grammarly incorrect and "Latine" would be better), most of the country actually doesn't gives a shit about 5 de Mayo. That day is represents our first victory as an independent country (we still lost that war BTW). Some of our actual important days are September 15, 1810 (start of the war of independence), September 27, 1821 (when we became an independent country), November 20, 1910 (start of the revolution against the dictator Porfirio Diaz), October 2, 1968 (Masacre de Tlatelolco where students and civilians were brutally murdered by the government for protesting during the Olympics of that year). DĆa de Muertos and Halloween don't cancel each other out BTW. Both can coexist.
AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON SPANGLISH!!!! Why when there is a diverse cast of characters of different nationalities, is always the latino the one that just beings speaking in a mixture of the languages? When is the Japanese breaking their perfect speaking just to say random bullshit in their language? Or when is the French doing it? Or the Italian? I'll tell you why not those: Because they are "white" and thus not exotic enough for the folks to see as different. "HE HE!! THE MEXICAN CHARACTER STOPPED TALKING MID SENTENCE TO START SAYING SOME SHIT IN SPANISH!!!! ISN'T THAT SO UNIQUE?!?!?!?!??!!?".
And as of the fucking guitar motif is like if they don't even know we have our own subcultures. The emos and the punks fought in Ciudad de Mexico less than 20 years ago, but no one sees alt latinos because alt culture is "white" and thus not "unique" enough. I'll give ANYTHING for a Latino character to have any version that isn't just that. Make em goth, rapper, electronic, hippy...
A fuckton also try to romantice the cartel lifestyle. Is a more inside-thing here but Americans really aren't helping by depicting us by believing all of us are sucking their asses 24/7 and we all idolize these pieces of dogshit. In reality these pieces of shit kidnap, torture and brutally slaughter innocent civilians. They use children and people in need as Cannon folder because they are cowardly pieces of shit. They enable sex trafficking and abuse of even CHILDREN. They have control of not just drugs, bur also agriculture, ranches, the police and state.
And guess who are the ones selling the guns, and buying the drug that allowed them to become powerful in the first place?
This isn't made to actually empower latin American people. Most of this "representation" is made for chicanos (AKA: Americans with Latin American roots) who never wanted to learn the language, our actual culture, our history, our view of the world, or see us as something more than a "Minority I can LARP", and people who can't see outside of their bubble. Nothing against the ones that actually try to connect and learn, but is very clear that the ones that are shown in media don't even try.
"But then why dont you make media ro represent yourselves and your culture?" WE FUCKING DO!!!! We also make shows, films, animation, games, music and so much more. First world countries arent the only ones capable of art, you know dipshit? But there is a little thing called LANGUAGE BARRIER" a lot of people from the US dont even bother. There are so many mangas and anime translated to English but barely anything in Spanish despite the similarities. The second image in this is of La Leyenda de la Nahuala, a Mexican animated film of the 2007, starting the series of Las Leyendas, which talked about our mythology and our culture with references. Literally in the second slide there is already more diversity in skin tone and face attributes than in most media with latino characters... but I know most people here probably didn't heard of it before this post.
I'm of lighter skin than average, but I have POC attributes like thicker lips, curly hair and small eyes. I'm very skinny and not curvatious. Interests are video games, technology and alternative fashion & music. And I know that there is never gonna be any fictional similar to me in any shape or form because a lot of these characteristics are "incompatible" according to dumbasses who just classify people by nationality.
So many of us are not getting representation in any shape or form. And it breaks my heart so much.
