Question Do you consider 'Greenland' as Nordic?

I know many people have asked this question but now the geopolitical climate has changed, and the last post I've seen asking this question was 2 years ago.

Greenland made its flag distinct because of wanting to be culturally seperated from the Nordics. How about now? especially after Trump's inauguration into presidency and the threats he are making?

Maybe not much has changed, but I am still curious to hear.

Question My 94-year-old grandfather's lifelong dream of visiting Greenland – should he still go?

My grandpa is 94 and has always credited his longevity to staying goal-oriented. He's accomplished nearly everything he set out to do in life, but has two goals left: outliving his lifelong rival (who passed at 94), and visiting Greenland.

When I asked why Greenland specifically, he told me that he and my grandmother traveled to almost every corner of the earth together, and Greenland was the last region they never made it to. After she passed two years ago, this trip became even more meaningful to him – a way to complete their shared dream. (He's also very insistent that he's been planning this for years, long before Trump started talking about Greenland!)

Here's the problem: because of Trump's recent aggressive stance about acquiring/invading Greenland, my grandfather has cancelled his plans. He's worried that Greenlanders no longer want American visitors, and he refuses to go somewhere he isn't welcome. Instead, he's planning to visit Newfoundland as "the closest he can get" without imposing.

I'm heartbroken for him. This has been his dream for decades. I asked him to wait a few days before giving up completely so I could ask actual Greenlanders how they feel.

So I'm hoping this community can help: Would an elderly American tourist genuinely interested in your country and culture still be welcome right now? Or is it better for him to let this dream go and visit Newfoundland instead?

Any honest perspective would mean the world to us. Thank you.

Question Aluu.

Question Supporting Greenland and its people

Hi I hope this isn’t a sensitive question because it’s not my intention to hurt anyone!

As a Dane I’ve always considered Greenland a part of our hearts. Like siblings! Whenever something good happens in Greenland, I cheer. When something hurtful happens, I weep.

Given the very recent event with the US and Donald Trump my question is: Is there a way that I (and others) can support you guys?

Are there any products/brands from Greenland I can switch to?

Any organizations I can donate to and support?

I hope you all are safe

Question Glacier tour in Qaqortoq

Hi everyone!

My friend and I are making a stop in Greenland on our way to the US

I would love to know what are the best things to do in Qaqortoq.

Also, I would love to do a glacier boat tour — any recommendations for a group we can join or a private person who can take us for a reasonable price?

Many thanks!

Question World of Warcraft i Grønland

World of Warcraft i Grønland?

Question Moving to Nuuk in less than two weeks. How’s the social scene there?

Aluukkut!

As the title says, I will be moving to Nuuk for work soon. I’m very introverted, but I want to give making friends while I’m there a try to lessen the homesickness. What activities are there to do? I’ve read of hiking activities and I wonder if there are groups or communities that welcome newcomers to join them? I like visiting museums and am very ecstatic that there is a local museum! Do they make guided tours with groups of people?

Basically, I guess, I’m just asking how and where does one usually make friends in Nuuk apart from the workplace. Qujanaq! 🙇🏻‍♀️

Edit: No, I am not American 😭

Question What are the best charity organisations that actually help the people of Greenland?

Hey there lovely people of Greenland,

My name is Victor Patrascan. I am a stand up comedian from Romania. I’ve been traveling the world for the last 6 years, telling jokes in broken English. I have no agents, no corporate sponsors, and no industry backing. I produce and set up my own shows.

On August 13th, I’m finally coming to Nuuk to tell jokes at Hotel Hans Egede.

Because I'm a visitor to your community and I consider it a privilege to visit Greenland and to tell jokes to you lovely people, I want to donate 100% of the ticket revenue from the Nuuk show to one or several local charities or association that is doing real, impactful work on the ground.

I’ve done a bit of research and found a few organizations: Inuit Circumpolar Council Greenland, Oceans North Kalaallit Nunaat, Mælkebøtten, Uummannaq Children's Home, and NORDECO. Are any of them actually helping? If you live in Greenland, from your experience, which of these would you back? Or is there another local initiative in Nuuk that I missed and should support instead?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Also, hope to see some of you at the show!

Question SIM card

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hey! I'm a SIM card collector from Scotland. It's quite a niche thing to collect, but I collect SIMs (the cards you put in your phone) like one may collect stamps. A goal of mine is to get a SIM from every country/territory/entity which issues them. I wanted to ask if anyone is able to send me a SIM from Greenland. I don't need it to be active (although that would certainly be cool) or registered, I just need the plastic card. Ideally it would have the chip bit and the frame, but if you have only the frame lying around from an old one or something I would still be very happy if you're able to send it over. From what I gather the current main operator is Tusass, which I would be honoured to add to my collection. If needs be I am able to pay for a SIM pack or shipping as long as it isn't too expensive.

Many thanks for your help!

Pictured as an example are cards from some of the rarest countries I have - Greenland would certainly be an addition to that page ;)

Question In what language do Greenlanders watch online content?

I’m curious about the language Greenlanders use online , When you scroll on social media or watch videos, what language do you mostly consume content in? Is there much content in Greenlandic that you personally watch? Or do most people mainly watch content in Danish or English ,

I tried to look for Greenlandic content but couldn’t find much, so I was wondering , Is it because there aren’t many content creators in Greenland yet , Or because many creators choose English since it’s the main internet language, especially for the youth

Basically: in what language do Greenlanders scroll ?

Thank you

Question Which language should I learn for travelling to Greenland?

I am planning to travel to Greenland in a few years and am therefore thinking about which language I will need to get along best in everyday life as a tourist.

I know that the official language is Greenlandic. While I am generally motivated to learn some Greenlandic, I doubt that I will be able to speak it well enough by then to get by as this language seems very difficult to me and as there are few resources for it.

Danish, on the other hand, would be quite easy for me to learn as I already know some Norwegian. But how many people speak Danish in Greenland? Would I get by with Danish as a tourist?

Or perhaps I don't need either of these languages because English could suffice?

Thanks in advance!

I swear to god, it's as if foreigners are hardwired to repeat this joke every time either of us is mentioned.

Iceland isn't even that green.

Question Relocating to Greenland🇬🇱 with German 🇩🇪 passport

Hey folks, would really appreciate if you could guide me on securing Greenland residence permit as a self-sufficient (savings + worldwide income) EU citizen.

What I can see is a Danish immigration website that mentions the possibility of acquiring Greenland’s residence permit by being EU national and having enough savings. However it doesn’t mention any details (min amount of savings, etc.) nor does it provide a clear guidance on how to apply. Thanks!

Question Did anything ever come of this? There were loads of articles back in 2022 about this sand and how Greenland could capitalise on it I have been checking for updates but I haven’t seen much about it since then.
