Mod Announcement Rule updates re: recent flood of doom-posting

hi folks —

we're following up on this post from a couple days ago essentially flagging the uptick of doom/gloom posts in the sub. we've been getting modmail about exactly this for a while now, and we've decided to make some minor tweaks to the rules in response.

we agree that the "is ai going to replace us" / "the industry is dying" / "is a degree worth it anymore" cycle has gotten repetitive enough that it's actively making the sub a worse place to spend time. we all know the market is trash, but frankly the answers haven't changed much since the last fifty iterations of those threads.

what's changing: we're expanding rule 5 to more explicitly cover this category. posts that fall into the doomer-question bucket — ai taking jobs, the market being terrible, should i leave the field, i've applied to 900 jobs, is design dead — without bringing anything new/nuanced to the discussion will be removed. if you see posts like this that get through our automod filters, please report them.

what's still completely welcome:

  • portfolio reviews and feedback requests — this is one of the main purposes of the sub and nothing about that is changing. any specific questions tied to your actual situation ( e.g. "i'm 6 months into a job search in [x market], here's what i've tried, what am i missing?") will be allowed as long as you're also attaching your portfolio/CV for specific feedback.
  • industry discussion bringing real data, news, or a genuinely new angle
  • vent posts (like this one) within reason, when something new/nuanced needs to be said. caveat here that we will be more closely monitoring the Vent tag to filter doomposting with a heavier hand.

the job market is rough right now. we know — we feel it too. our mod team is made up of freelancers and contractors and seasoned educators, and we're all navigating the same thing in a very very weird time for the industry. but the same three questions on loop have become tiresome and unproductive, and they're crowding out other more relevant/interesting content.

more than happy to hear feedback on this in the comments.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) [OC] Cover Art by me

Decided to make my own cover art for an upcoming release after a few years of zero illustrations made. A bit of a weird process: Abobe Illustrator for the base skeletons from refs and drafts to Procreate for inking details to Photoshop for texturing and finishing touches. And I gotta say I forgot how much joy the inking part brings.

The first idea was to create only the cyberflute, but it felt quite empty, so after the course change I just tucked it in a corner not to fully waste hours of designing it.

The track is a dark fairytale bass music flip, so I wanted to keep the atmosphere in line with that aim. And yeah I know the spines look like a stack of taco bell logos, don't at me.

What do you guys think of the composition and the skeleton designs? Any advice on empowering attention-grabbing potential?

Made this poster for my brother out of his cat. I think it looks pretty dope, but something feels off. Maybe the colors? I've been staring at it too long so do you have any suggestions for it?

Lion is from Adobe Stock that I manipulated with Photoshops content aware scale and Filter Gallerys stamp effect.

Big font is Archivo Black.

Thanks!

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) My new & (mostly!) hand drawn map of Yosemite

A little while ago I made a similar UK & Ireland walking map, so I decided to try my hand at a US one and start with Yosemite.

I drew all the rivers, roads, trails and the font which I made from hand drawn type, then printed this out. I drew all the trees and details with pencil filling in the areas, then I scanned and did a lot of cleanup.

Sharing Resources Graffiti/Design Magazine web Archive

Thumbnail printyard-3uz.pages.dev
31 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I made a graffiti magazine web archive since most of them were horrible to navigate, required downloads or straight up shut down.

I based it off a more visual perspective, with Magazine covers in the index for easier search and navigation. It also doesent collect or send any data, everything stays local. (It only tracks what you have read to resume where you left off, and some stuff for the tools available)

Said tools include:

  • Color Palette Analyzer: Crop the selection to adjust the area you want the colors to be picked. It shows the principal colors used, and allows them to be copied to CSS.
  • Clipping Tool: Take a Clipping (kind of a ''screenshot'' Tool) that stays stored locally in the clippings section, where you can then view them, go to the exact page it was taken from, organize them by Moodboards or Tags, or Download them as WEBP to retain Quality. You can adjust the area you want to save.
  • Download Magazines
  • Track Read Magazines, start in the page you left off.
  • And more

This website is completely free, no account, no data collected, no trackers. My intention is for Designers, Illustrators and other Artists to expand their knowledge and seek inspiration. Most of these Magazines include more than just graffiti, they have interviews, cool backgrounds and textures, Amazing editing and composing ideas, and more.

This isn't meant to be Advertisement or Self-Promotion. Its purely for the love of Graffiti Culture and Preservation.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) I created this mascot myself. Does it look AI generated?

Hey there! I'm a beginner graphic designer, but I've been designing and drawing as a hobby for several years & I'm currently building up my portfolio with some real and practice projects.

Several days ago, I designed this conceptual brand identity logotype & mascot, inspired by retro American diner visuals. I'm an okay-ish illustrator, albeit I mostly draw doodles or small illustrations, and I'm using Procreate to draw digitally. With this project, I intend to emulate the style of a mid-century cartoon mascot using a calligraphy brush on Procreate then turn it into a vector on Illustrator.

However, I noticed an earlier post on this subreddit showcasing a brand design with a mascot, and how people (including me) could tell it was AI generated immediately. It got me wondering if my own work also looked AI generated, considering how good AI 'art' have become. And if so, should one avoid any particular drawing or design styles that AI has mastered and always strive to create something more distinguishable from AI?

So, what do you think? I'm also looking forward to general feedback on this personal project outside of this whole AI anxiety, since I'm also a beginner designer hoping to share my work with the world lol. Thank you!

Note: I added a screenshot of my original drawing on Procreate to show how it looked before it became a vector.

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) My first ever mockups

Thumbnail

This is my first time making a mockup and I really like how it turned out. I made the designs in illustrator and imported them into photoshop. I used a 'ready to use' mockup off a website. The brief said they were advertising to young adults so I decided to go with bright eye catching colors and fun patterns. I wanted each of the flavor to have their own fun design rather than just a copy, paste, and recolor. I struggled with finding a typeface but ended up going with something geometric to give a more youthful feel. This is the brief:

[ZUNO Fruit Teas offer a variety of unique, fair-trade fruit tea blends from across the globe. Unlike many of ZUNO's contemporaries, ZUNO is purposely trying to attract a younger audience. Fruit tea is typically considered a slightly more mature choice of drink for middle-aged and older adults, but ZUNO is trying to break this perception and get younger people enjoying the healthy benefits of fruit tea!

ZUNO's core range of best selling teas are of course your typical fruit flavors, such as lemon, strawberry, mixed berry, ginger etc. but they are also keen to push their more obscure flavors such as 'Lemon Sherbet Iced Tea' and 'Very Berry Crush'

We want you to create a fun, playful, and most importantly youthful brand identity for ZUNO. The client is keen to explore some playful pattern work or illustration to use across their product packaging. They do not want to use any photography on the packaging itself.

Explore some illustration styles and experiment with some different patterns. Once you are happy with a route, you can begin experimenting with different type lockups and brand marks. ZUNO's brand tagline is 'Drink Tea Everyday'. This must be incorporated in some way.]

The brief came from a website. I can drop a link in the comments if you want more information on the brief like creative direction and stuff. I also added images of the designs in greyscale because thats something people always ask about in the comments. I'm still learning so constructive criticism is always welcome.

Sharing Resources I have a problem. Every time design work makes me jealous, I save it. I'm at 5,500+

Post image
99 Upvotes

It started innocently. A poster here, a logo there. Then a whole branding system I couldn't stop thinking about.

A few years later I had thousands of unnamed screenshots, three different "inspo" folders, and zero ability to find anything when I actually needed it.

So instead of getting help, I made it worse. I organized all of it into a free library called Pixlpin.

What's in there now:

• Branding and identity systems
• Posters, editorial and packaging
• Illustration that's doing real design work
• Motion pieces, ad campaigns and launch videos

You can search it with design words like "bold poster" or "minimal packaging," and when you open a piece it shows you similar work next to it.

Every piece credits the designer and links back to their original post.

I keep it FREE on purpose. Good references shouldn't sit behind a monthly fee, especially for students and designers just starting out. I spend 8+ hours a day digging through Instagram and X for the best work I can find and adding it, so the library keeps getting better.

I really hope it helps some of you the way it's helped me.

Browsing is free, and you only need an account if you want to save things into your own collections.

Career Advice Leave current in-house job at small company for a job at a big media corp that recently reestructured?

• Upvotes

Looking for career advice:

At current industry state would it be too risky to leave a "stable" in-house-all-things motion + graphic design position at a small company for a motion design position at a big media corp that recently went through restructuring (change of leadership, big debt renegotiation and mass lay offs) ?

Pay would be about 10k more/year, full time but fully remote from home, with a few visits per year at their office 6hr drive away. TV industry, big media company, multiple channels. Would be part of their in-house creative team, focusing on motion and digital graphic design only.

My current job is full time, but I commute 2hrs per day, and I've been there 5 years. TV industry, small company of one channel. Little space to grow on career or level up in title/pay, but I do multiple roles, from art direction, set design, print, digital, animation.

I am in my late 30s, have a house on mortgage and partner also works in a creative industry, but has not been stable, alternating between long stretches of up to 1 year unemployed and 6+months of temporary contracts, working from home.

If both of us are not employed full time and we don't make a combined income of at least 120 thousand $/year we get in a risky situation that might make us lose our house. I currently make less than 80k$/year. I'm in Canada.

(I drive an electric car so there's no cost on gas. There would not be a difference in savings on the new job regarding that)

Would changing jobs now be too risky?

Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Looking for Feedback on my Poster Designs!

Hi there, I recently worked on a few posters to print for my friends.
I took the opportunity to experiment outside of what I've learned in High School (I attended a graphic design institute) and I was curious to have some feedbacks from the community.

These designs are not trying to send a message nor have deeper meaning, I took'em as practice and a fun way to practice. With that in mind, I'm curious of what yall gotta say.
Cheers and keep inspiring.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Advice on sorting through all the AI and templates when looking for design references

I work as a graphic designer for film and tv, and most of the time my job is more about creating graphics that imitate real life rather than doing something brand new and inventive. Because of this, I’m always trying to scour the internet for real photos of graphics out in the wild, whether from the past or the present. My issue is that with such a huge influx of ai designs and fill in the blank templates, it’s become more difficult to find examples of real work. Does anyone have any resources they rely on for real designs of different things? And it doesn’t necessarily have to be well designed graphics. Sometimes the off-center, comic sans flyer made by a mom for the school play is just as useful to me as something expertly designed.

Career Advice Does anyone else feel like they become blind to their own mistakes at work?

I'm a graphic designer, and this has been frustrating me lately.

Sometimes I'll finish a design, go over it a few times, and think everything looks good. Then, right after I send it, I'll suddenly notice something I completely missed. Maybe I copied some text incorrectly, left out a word, or didn't notice that the spacing between elements was uneven.

The thing is, these mistakes seem so obvious once I notice them, and I genuinely don't understand how I didn't see them before. It's not like I don't check my work, which makes it even more frustrating.

I already struggle with anxiety about job security, so every time this happens, I start worrying about how it makes me look at work.

For those of you who work in design or any job where attention to detail matters, how do you deal with this? Have you found any tricks that actually help you catch these things before sending your work?

Discussion Can people really not tell the difference between human work and AI?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Today, I sent over some designs to a client, and she pointed out a typo in the street name, adding: 'Maybe because the design is Ai generated and it messed up the spelling.

I was really shocked when I read her message. I've been in the design industry for a long time, I still work in Photoshop, and I rarely use AI in my work.

Can people really not tell the difference between human work and AI to this extent? It’s truly disappointing

Asking Question (Rule 4) Need your opinion

Hello everyone! God bless yall!

I had this thought stuck in my mind for quite sometime and wanted to hear what you think!

Im currently in a slow season of my freelancing business and usually i design and produce vinyl decal for peoples cars. In the past clients would send me there AI design to be made into vinyl decals, (which would not work well with the type of vinyl i make since i have to cut each color and put them together like lego). I tell them i need to redesign the composition into vectors so it works when producing the final product. I haven't had any complaints and recieved lots of compliments and many more clients but...

Heres the question?

Am i wrong for re-designing ai art to look better in vectors or am i being dumb?

Idk honestly

Discussion Is Canva becoming the new Adobe, or are they actually saving us? 🧐

Canva has been expanding its creative software ecosystem through acquisitions, including Affinity, which it acquired in 2024, and remove.bg, which became part of Canva in 2021.

Now, the new Affinity app is completely free for its core photo editing, vector design and layout tools. Canva has also brought animation software Cavalry into its portfolio and is connecting its creative tools through Canva ProSuite.

Meanwhile, Adobe's professional creative apps remain largely subscription-based.

Is Canva making professional design more accessible and giving Adobe some much-needed competition, or could having so many creative tools under one company eventually create a different kind of monopoly?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Can a Designer Research and Address a Social Issue That Doesn't Exist in Their Own Country?

Can a designer research a social issue that doesn't actively exist in their own country?

For example, if a design student wants to explore a cultural practice that is documented in a neighbouring country but has no personal or cultural connection to that country, does that make their thesis less relevant or harder to defend?

Can a student choose to focus on a global issue simply because they find it important and worth investigating, or do they need a direct connection to the country and community they are researching?

I'd genuinely appreciate hearing perspectives from design students, educators, and researchers. Thank you!

This is a practice poster. All the information is made up and fictional. I wanted to try swiss design in order to practice typography and composition. I would like feedback. I am a beginner in graphics design but i am mainly a video editor and mainly do motion graphics. I want to improve. Audience is other graphic designers, who are willing to help. I am self taught.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Broken hands. Tools to aid with design

Broke both of my hands, ugh.... Looking for anyone's experience with tools to help productivity when you have limited use of your hands.

Left hand is in a cast and not usable, right hand is usable, but I'm really missing all the key commands and stuff I do with my left hand. Productivity has taken a huge hit.

Anyone have tools that they've used to help with similar situations?

Potentially using AI to aid with productivity or the mechanical things I cannot do with my left hand? I work a lot in indesign and Photoshop, design for print and digital, and when sending files to press, lots of color conversion.
