Announcement Announcement: Framework Is Tripling Its Support for CachyOS

1.8k Upvotes

Hey CachyOS Community,

We have more great news to share. Framework is increasing its support for CachyOS. The donation goes from $250 per month to $10,200 per year ($850 per month), more then three times the original amount.

When Framework first started sponsoring us, they sent us a Framework Laptop 16 for optimizing our kernel and packages, and committed to a monthly donation. You can read the original announcement here:

https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/framework-sponsorship-for-cachyos/19376

Having Framework triple its support says a lot about how much they care about Linux on their hardware and about the open-source projects their users rely on. For a community-driven project like ours, this kind of steady funding makes a real difference. It helps us:

  • Keep our build servers, mirrors and infrastructure running reliably
  • Spend more time on kernel optimizations, packaging and hardware support
  • Move closer to our long-term goal of working on CachyOS full-time

A big thank you to Framework for believing in CachyOS, and to every one of you who uses, tests, reports bugs, and donates. You keep this project going.

If you’d like to support CachyOS too, take a look at our donation page: https://wiki.cachyos.org/support/donation/

Thanks to Framework, and thanks to all of you for using CachyOS!

CachyOS Troubleshooting First Steps

CachyOS is a rolling release. Updates arrive continuously instead of in one big yearly jump, which is why you get new kernels, drivers and gaming improvements so fast. It also means that occasionally something breaks. Most of the time the cause is boring and the fix is one of the same handful of steps.

This might seem like a lot and could feel daunting. Help is available, but it requires some information.

In order for folks to help you out, you need to supply some information. Here is a step-by-step plan. Work through it in order.

How to ask so that people actually help

When you post, include:

  • The four answers from Step 1
  • The paste.cachyos.org link from Step 3
  • What you've already tried, honestly, including any case of working with AI without understanding what you were asking, or what the AI was saying
  • The Step 7 result if you got that far

Rule zero: stop running commands you don't understand

Many badly broken installs weren't broken by an update. They were broken by three or four half-applied "fixes" from Google, an old forum post, and working with AI without understanding what was being asked or what the AI was saying, stacked on top of each other. Each one silently changed something. By the time help is requested, nobody can tell which change caused which symptom, and the actual problem is buried under the attempted repairs.

So: from the moment something goes wrong, stop applying fixes found somewhere else. Work through the steps below instead.

If a pile of commands has already been pasted into a terminal, that's fine, it happens. Just mention it when asking for help and try to recall what was run. That's far more useful than pretending the system is untouched.

Step 1: Describe the problem properly

Before touching anything, write down four things:

  • What exactly goes wrong? Be specific. "The screen goes black when launching Steam and the power button has to be held" is useful. "Gaming is broken" is not.
  • When did it start? A date or "after last Tuesday's update" is enough.
  • What happened right before it started? Was it an update, a new game, a driver change, a setting toggled, or a fix applied?
  • Does it happen every time, or only sometimes?

That last question is more important than people expect. Something that fails every single time is usually a configuration or driver problem. Something that fails randomly is more often heat, power, memory, or a background process interfering.

Step 2: Terminal survival basics

A terminal is needed for some of this. It's not scary, but may look like it is.

Open one with Ctrl + Alt + T. If that does nothing, open the start menu and search for terminal. When it asks for a password, nothing appears while typing. That's deliberate. Type it and press Enter. Copy text out of the terminal with Ctrl + Shift + C, paste in with Ctrl + Shift + V. The normal Ctrl+C means "stop the running program" here. sudo at the start of a command just means "run this with administrator rights".

Step 3: Generate a log bundle

CachyOS ships a single command that collects everything a helper needs, run from the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo cachyos-bugreport.sh

It gathers hardware details, kernel messages and recent system logs, then asks whether to upload the result. Type Y. A link to paste.cachyos.org comes back. That link is the single most useful thing to include when asking for help. Post it.

For anything the bug report doesn't cover, CachyOS also has a plain "send this to a pastebin" tool. Both of these work (run in the terminal, see Step 2):

  • paste-cachyos ~/some-file.txt
  • journalctl -b -1 -p err | paste-cachyos

The second one shows errors from the previous boot, which is what's wanted after a freeze or a crash that forced a reboot.

Two things:

  • Generate the log bundle before trying Step 6, because rolling back a snapshot also rolls back the logs.
  • The report includes hostname, hardware IDs and full log lines, and the paste is reachable by anyone with the URL. Fine for troubleshooting, but don't paste anything sensitive.

Step 4: Update fully, then actually reboot

Open Shelly, the package manager that ships with current CachyOS, let it check for updates and install them. Older installs may have Octopi instead, which is equally fine. Or do it in the terminal (see Step 2):

sudo pacman -Syu

Then RESTART the computer. No logging out, not closing the lid but an actual restart.

A genuinely large share of "my system is broken" reports are exactly this and nothing more. On a rolling release the kernel currently running and the drivers that were just installed can fall out of step. Everything looks updated, but the running system is still working with yesterday's parts. Typical symptoms: no graphics acceleration, Steam refusing to launch, external monitors not detected, unexplained crashes, etc. A reboot resolves this class of problem. It's a common misconception that Linux never needs a restart — that's not true. The OS cannot process kernel upgrades without a restart.

There's a second reason this step comes early. If some packages were updated and others weren't, the system is probably in what's called a partial upgrade state, and arbitrary unrelated things start failing. -Syu brings everything back in line. This is also why a single package should never be installed with pacman -Sy something. Always update the whole system.

Step 5: When one specific program won't start

If the problem is a single application rather than the whole system, run it from a terminal (see Step 2) to see why it fails. Type its name and press Enter:

steam

or firefox, or whatever it is. Let it fail, then press Ctrl + C. Copy everything the terminal printed and share it, or pipe it to the pastebin tool (see Steps 2 and 3).

For Steam games specifically: right-click the game, Properties, and put PROTON_LOG=1 %command% in the launch options. Run the game, let it fail, and a steam-<numbers>.log file will appear in the home folder.

Step 6: Roll the system back to before it broke

This is the feature most new CachyOS users don't realise they have.

If the system is installed on Btrfs, which is the default, CachyOS automatically takes a snapshot before and after every package install, update or removal. So when an update breaks something, there is almost always a restore point from a few minutes beforehand.

If the desktop still starts: open the start menu, search for Btrfs Assistant and open it. Go to the Snapper tab. A list of snapshots with dates will appear. Pick the most recent one from before the problem appeared, click Restore, and reboot. This GUI method works regardless of which bootloader is used.

If the desktop won't start at all: restart and tap Esc (or hold Shift) right after the machine powers on to bring up the boot menu. Look for an entry about snapshots, open it, and pick one dated before the problem. Unlike the GUI method above, this one depends on the bootloader: it works on Limine (which is a bootloader), which has been the installer default since the January 2026 release, and on recent GRUB setups. If systemd-boot was kept from an earlier install, there's no snapshot entry in the menu and a live USB will be needed, so ask for help rather than improvising.

Things worth understanding before doing this:

It only rewinds the system. Documents, photos and game saves live in the home folder and are not touched. That's reassuring, but it also means a rollback will not bring back a deleted file, and won't undo a broken configuration inside the home folder. Don't immediately re-run the update afterwards, or whatever broke it will be reinstalled. Ask first. If there's no Btrfs Assistant and no snapshot entry in the boot menu, the system is probably not on Btrfs and this section doesn't apply.

Step 7: Try the other kernel

If the boot menu lists an LTS kernel entry, boot it and see whether the problem goes away. Recent CachyOS installs ship both a current and an LTS kernel for exactly this reason.

This takes two minutes and reveals a lot. If the problem disappears on LTS, it points to a kernel or driver regression. If it's identical on both, the kernel may not be the culprit and attention moves elsewhere. Either answer narrows things down enormously, so mention the result when asking for help.

Step 8: When updates themselves fail

If the update in Step 4 refuses to run and throws an error, open CachyOS Hello, the welcome window, and look at its Troubleshooting section. It has buttons for the common package system problems: keyring trouble, a stale lock file, a corrupted cache. Try those before running anything found online. These specific failures attract a lot of bad advice that makes things considerably worse.

Question CachyOS kernels - there can only be one

As you probably already know (or are about to find out), CachyOS offers a whole array of perfectly tailored, optimized kernels. And yet - we can still only actually run one at a time. Do you even pay attention to which one this is? Do you swap the default kernel for something specific, or just stick with the "stock" one? And if you do swap it, do you have a gut feeling that something actually runs better?

You have to agree the list of options is enormous:

  • linux-cachyos — default, EEVDF scheduler, 1000Hz. The “if unsure, pick this” option.
  • linux-cachyos-bore — BORE scheduler
  • linux-cachyos-eevdf — stock EEVDF with extra responsiveness tweaks
  • linux-cachyos-bmq — BMQ scheduler (Project C). No sched-ext support.
  • linux-cachyos-lts — LTS base, BORE scheduler, minimally patched for max stability
  • linux-cachyos-hardened — BORE + linux-hardened patchset (fair warning: noticeably hurts performance)
  • linux-cachyos-deckify — built for handhelds (Steam Deck, ROG Ally, MSI Claw)
  • linux-cachyos-server — 300Hz, no preemption, tuned for server workloads
  • linux-cachyos-rt-bore — real-time (PREEMPT_RT) + BORE
  • linux-cachyos-rc — latest mainline/experimental, where new patchset features get tested first

Do you have your favourite one, have you tested them, or just picking whatever sounds cool? :)

In my case, linux-cachyos works so smoothly that to this day I haven’t considered any other kernel. But maybe there’s something superior to this?

Desktop What is the top kernel level AC game you would play if it came to Linux?

With the discussions of EAC becoming more linux friendly and CachyOS making an option for kernel level AC, what is the one game you would pick up immediately if it makes its kernel anti-cheat work on Linux?

I'll start with a game I pray never comes to Linux. League of Legends. I hope to all that is holy that Riot has some phobia of Linux users for forever because if that game comes over here, then I know for a fact my addiction will return with a vengeance, and I have finally had a year of being able to sleep properly, something I haven't had in quite awhile XD

Help CachyOS seems to have bricked itself.

I'm not sure what to say here, but my system all of a sudden broke while I was playing Subnautica 2. First the lockscreen broke, then I tried restarting KDE and that failed. I tried restarting my computer but it'd lock up as soon as plasmalogin loaded, none of the TTY's would work, so I decided to chroot from my live USB to run a pacman update. I got this when I tried running it: fish: Job 1, 'pacman -Syu' terminated by signal SIGBUS (Misaligned address error). I am kinda at a loss of what to do.

Linux Kernel 7.2.11-1-cachyos
KDE Plasma 6.7.11(?)
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
32GB DDR4 2666
RTX 4070 TI
BTRFS filesystem with 20 GiB unallocated space 37GiB Free (from df -h)
Pretty new to CachyOS (and Arch)

If you need more info, I will gladly share it, I just didn't know exactly what I needed to share.

Edit: Forgot to mention flatpak does the same thing, so it seems whatever happened is affecting a lot of utilities on my system.

SOLVED Solved Random Freezing!

TL;DR: If you're getting random freezes, memtest your EXPO profile and try disabling global C-state control in your BIOS.

Relevant Specs: Ryzen 7 9800X3D, ROG Strix B650E-I, RTX 5070 Ti, Corsair SF750, 32GB (2x16GB) G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5-6000 CL30

I've been running CachyOS for a few months now and overall it's been great. I like to tinker, so it's a good fit. I mainly use it as a daily driver for YouTube, web browsing, and quite a bit of gaming (007 First Light has been smooth as butter).

Recently I moved and had to store my PC for a few weeks. The CMOS battery must have drained or something, because my BIOS settings got reset. No biggie, I just re-enabled EXPO and booted back up.

Then I started getting random hard freezes in a couple of scenarios. First, it would lock up during regular browsing, and the only fix was a hard reset. Later, I'd see freezes on the lock screen, or the PC wouldn't wake from sleep. Troubleshooting revealed my memory was failing MemTest. My heart sank. The RAM kit is still under warranty, but I was super frustrated.

I tested a bunch of configurations (EXPO off, individual sticks in different slots, BIOS update) and figured out the profile was the problem. There were two, and I'd picked an unstable one by accident. That fixed the freezes during regular use, but not the lock screen ones.

So I kept digging until I remembered another BIOS setting. Back on Windows I'd disabled C-states, hoping it would help with coil whine (turns out the whine was coming from the GPU). The BIOS reset put that setting back to default, so I disabled C-states again to test, and voila! No more freezes on the lock screen for the past couple of weeks, and the PC sleeps as expected.

Definitely a rollercoaster bouncing between troubleshooting and spiraling over potentially needing to RMA the RAM. Figured if other people were experiencing similar issues I would just share what worked for me.

Bug Report Just updated to Kernel 7.3 today and I'm still seeing some blackscreen issues with VRR enabled

After all the issues earlier this week I held off on the 7.3 update until today. I saw people saying 7.3.0-4 fixed the black screen problems, but on 7.3.0-5 I’m still having an issue. When I go fullscreen (YouTube, for example), the display cuts out after about 5 seconds and the TV says no input. Hitting Escape to leave fullscreen brings it back. With VRR set to Never it’s fine, with Automatic it drops, and with Always it flashes black every time I press a key.

I’m on a 9070 XT going through an AV receiver to my TV, all HDMI 2.1, at 4K120 with HDR on. KDE Plasma 6.8.1 on Wayland, Mesa 26.2.5. I know the receiver in the middle can complicate things, but 4K120, HDR and VRR were all working fine through it until today’s update.

To narrow it down, I downgraded the amdgpu firmware and the drop still happened, and it’s fine with the new firmware on the older kernel. Booting the LTS kernel (6.18.55) works fine with VRR on Automatic, and so does going back to 7.2.10. Everything else stayed the same, so it looks like something in the 7.3 kernel itself.

Is anyone else on RDNA4 using VRR over HDMI seeing this, or has anyone tried a newer 7.3.x build? Happy to post logs if it helps.

Help Can't update CachyOS

• Upvotes

As title says, I can't update CachyOS because there's a problem everytime I boot it up. After sudo pacman -Syu, GRUB loads normally, logo too, but afterwards, I'm just left with a black screen with a cursor blinking at the top left corner of the screen. KDE simply won't show anything. I can access other TTY's yeah, but I can't do no more, it simply won't start DE, I tried certain things I saw on recent posts but none work. Anyone have an idea what could be happening?

Help Discord issues.

Discord through pacman has been running quite fine for me for the last month or so. When i watch others streams, it would stutter so i turned off gpu acceleration and its been running very smooth. Now this morning, it wont load anyones streams. If i turn gpu acceleration back on, i can see, but the stutter persists, while turning off i cant load stream at all.

Not sure what changed. I updated everything thinking maybe it would fix but yea, nothin.

**edit, just using vesktop now and it runs fine, thank you. Just was weird the official repo was working and then just wasnt after no changes/updates.

Question NTFS to BRTFS

Hi everyone,

Im one of those people who uses Windows, but every now and then feels the urge to switch back to Linux - and then switch back again. Right now Im still missing the full range of features when it comes to Game Pass (I know Xodus does a great job).

The question thats giving me a headache right now: Is it possible to convert NTFS to BFS without constantly copying data back and forth?

Question How is Cachy these days and how does it compare to other modern distros

• Upvotes

Hello,

What is the state of the system these days, I tried to use it maybe 2 years ago, but did not meet my needs.

The needs these days are gaming, more development, learning and the most modern topic ai, oh and to be stable. I mainly used Fedora, EndeveorOS alongside windows, but these past couple of month have not booted into the linux due to getting bored with my Vanilla Fedora Gnome setup.

I was thinking of going to Omarchy, but it is a little overwhelming with all that stuff and the ai integrated in the system is maybe a red flag.

How does Cachy compare to the Omarchy thing and PopOS? - PopOS look so clean, but it seems clunky
How have you customized it to make it yours and for your needs?
Is is stable enough to not break after an update?
Gaming, Ai and Develepment - how would you rate these on CachyOS?

If it matters my build is:
AMD Ryzen 5 7600X
GeForce RTX 4060 Ti v2 OC Edition 8GB
32 Ram
3TB SSD
Genesis keyboard (Thor 404 TKL) and mouse (Zircon 660)
2xMonitors BenQ Mobius 165Hz with HDR

Question I’m thinking about switching to CachyOS.

Hello. I’ve never used Linux, but I’m becoming increasingly tempted to try it because Windows keeps throwing random errors at me—most likely due to my aging processor. My setup includes an i5-6600K, a GTX 1080, and 16 GB of RAM; will I run into any issues with CachyOS? I ask because I’ve heard that NVIDIA hardware can be problematic on Linux, and, well, my CPU only has 4 cores. Also, is there a truly noticeable improvement when switching from Windows to Linux? For context, I primarily use this computer for gaming.

Bug Report Mesa update in cachyos repository still in version 26.2.4

My CPU is v4 capable and I don't understand why there is no mesa in cachyos-v4 repository (and there is in cachyos-v3 ??), so my mesa driver is updating from cachyos repository, but the version there is stucked at 26.2.4 while all other repos has already 26.2.5. In Arch extra repo there is already 26.2.5 so why it doesn't update from there? Can anyone explain how does it work?
