General Question What are your thoughts about a (big screen) bedroom TV ? Like it or hate it ?

I've always had a bedroom TV and am considerate about shutting it off early on weeknights. It doesn't affect our love life but I have friends who are adamant about the no-TV-in-the-bedroom rule.

General Question Holiday Help, Please?

• Upvotes

Sorry this is so long. Okay. I'm in my late 60s. I cared for, almost solely, both my parents (divorced) and one of their significant others, until both parents died, both at 90 years old (8 year age difference). So I spent about 15 years total with all three people, two of whom had Alzheimer's, and did it by myself. I had to return the S.O. to his children, finally, when my mom and I couldn't care for him. It was pretty intense, and I had delayed my own plans to do this. I had to do every freaking holiday and round everyone up, mostly for my mom, who was obsessed with holidays. I swore I never wanted to look at another holiday. I kind of hate them, to be honest.

My husband and I finally moved to our retirement spot, and it just so happens my sister overheard us talking about moving here and she moved here before we did! Her husband got a job here. She is older than I, and right after she moved here, her husband died suddenly. We finally moved about 10 years after she did. She and I had not lived together for 50 years before that. My husband worked a swing shift and I was caring for my people, so we were ships in the night. I love my husband and I just wanted to finally spend time with him. When we got here, he started having health problems, but we've stabilized him and he's doing well. We play music locally and I'm quite happy being a homebody.

My sister now feels disappointed because she had a fantasy where we would do everything together and every week. I told her before we moved I am not a social butterfly and want my time at home with my husband. We play video games, binge series, play music. I have made a few music friends, but don't really do much outside of dinners out every few weeks. If I invite my sister, she dominates the conversation and pulls it towards her. She is a nervous talker. If we go hear music, she talks through the whole thing.

Every year at this time, HER friends start inviting us to holiday parties. This includes Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, Super Bowl, etc. I would be so happy to stay home with my husband. My sister has actually said to me, "I think you just don't like me. I thought it would be different when you moved here." Instead of just going on her own, she has attached herself to me, and now doesn't see those friends but rarely. So yesterday, the Thanksgiving invitation went out. I really don't even like these people. But if I don't go, she won't go. She wants to be with us. I am an eat the meal and go home girl. She clings to us so hard we can barely get out the door.

And now, for whatever cruel twist this is, everyone looks at ME for guidance on what to do. I don't know how this has happened, and I'm miserable. My sister has become my mother, who always got me to do things "for me." And a lot of guilt is used. Sister has also said, "if I fell down and died, nobody would ever know." 🙄 I really don't do guilt well and it makes me withdraw. I am not a social girl and have to put on a persona to get through these things.

Once again, I am having to consider everyone but myself. My choices apparently hurt everyone's feelings. My husband doesn't care, and of course, leaves it up to me. I can't find a way to tell my sister to stop nagging, that she's just like Mom, whom she hated. She would literally cry and be devastated if I criticize her, even constructively. She remembers anything I say and refers back to it forever.

Serious answers, please. I DO need to spend more time with her, but she spends it saying how disappointed she is with our relationship, which does not help me want to be with her. At all. Help! And consider that she is VERY sensitive, and lives alone. She dates, but they always leave after a bit.

General Question How can i face my fear ?

Writing this alone is giving me so much anxiety. I been married to my wife for over 17 years. I was raised here in the U.S, my english is not fluid as i do have an accent. We are both bilingual but ever since we started dating i just got used to speaking to her in Spanish as i have always been very self conscious about my accent. In the 17+ years that we been together, i have never talked english in front of her. Over the years, this just became more dificult, the fear of being judged grew strong and strong. Long story short, my daughter recently started dating, and she is now dating a white guy. Today her boyfriend will be coming over for dinner for the first time as my daughter wants us to meet him. She said she want us to talk to him to get to know him. Moments like this i often stay quiet and avoid talking to feel comfortable. Today i dont think i can do that as i do not want to be rude. I want to face this fear but i just feel so afraid of how much ill be judged by my wife. I need advice :(

General Question Any advice on dating a vegetarian?

I’ve been dating somebody for approximately a year and she is a vegetarian. Up until recently, we really haven’t had much of an issue. However, on a current trip we took together, I ended up realizing how much this part of our relationship depends on me being quite flexible when it comes to choosing a restaurant when we go out to eat.

Context: we recently went to Japan, and as you may or may not know, Japan is not an easy country for vegetarians. It got to the point where she was constantly on Google maps trying to find an appropriate place to eat, and then even if sometimes we got to that place, she had very little or no options. We even decided to go to McDonald’s at one point, and there were no vegetarian options. Of course, from the beginning, I was quite open and flexible and I wanted to be supportive, but it became more difficult as the days went by.

After almost a week of having to go through this every day, I decided that I would take a break and I told her that she can go and choose anything that she wants and that I would be going out by myself. It was at this point I realized that I always have to be okay with a restaurant that she chooses or “approves” if we want to eat together or if there are no options at a place I want to go.

I don’t find this to be fair. That being said, I don’t want her to start eating meat because of me, and I don’t want to have to choose to be a vegetarian because I don’t want to. Some of the options I thought of is that we take certain meals on our own, which when traveling kind of sucks.

Has anyone else been in a situation like this, and if so, I’m happy to hear any advice.

General Question what causes the development of your “love language” expression? why do some people end up showing love through gift giving instead of words of affirmation?

its easier to understand that someone might prefer love to be shown in certain ways because its either what theyre used to or what they haven’t received enough of, but what determines the development of how we show our love?

Political Question What ever happened to the oil that was seized when the U.S. government took control of Venezuela's oil exports? More specfically, what happened to the revenu from the oil?

We're talking about $13B in oil revenues. After the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and the capture of Maduro, the U.S. government took control of Venezuela's oil exports. We know about billions in oil revenue, but the exact whereabouts and handling of that money have become a controversy.

The US has a long history with untraceable "shush funds". There are parallels between the current Venezuelan oil mechanism and operations like Iran-Contra or the Cold War-era Latin American drug funds. Everything old is new again. In each of these cases, the U.S. executive branch established a "closed-loop" financial system that operated entirely outside the constitutional oversight of Congress.

Knowing your history feels really important right now. Time seems to be one dumb flat circle.

General Question Does this seem sound for visiting a friend?

• Upvotes

I, 20F in the usa want to visit a friend who lives about 4 miles from me. I do not have a car and nor does she but i have not seen her in a long time so i really want to this time. We plan to hang out at night so I was thinking of walking to her house at night. My parents have my location on my phone too but I would be walking alone to her house but it is only 4 miles so if by the 0.000000% chance someone wants to harm me i'll be at her house by then. I hear horror stories online about woman walking alone but those are really rare, but I do want to know people thoughts.

General Question Was it for real?

• Upvotes

My college years were pretty normal like most people experience. Schoolwork was always plentiful and the deadlines would make you feel pressure. Here’s a little backstory before I tell you what happened.

We had lot of presentations, usually three or four a month that were required to be between 15-20 minutes in length. The presentations were always involved and required a good deal of research. They were almost always PowerPoint presentations because they tend to keep the audience more focused on your topic. A few of these presentations were filmed which was also a requirement as we had to critique ourselves.

These in depth presentations were tolerable and enjoyable because of my good friend who I knew for a few years prior to college. We sat next to each other and would work on them together since the majority of them you’d need a partner. He would usually always beat me to getting to class like 10-15 minutes before 8am daily. He worked primarily in his family owned business and shared duties with two other siblings. He had more time to study and was a good student too. I had a job at a restaurant during this time cooking and did my schoolwork on my break while eating a little something.

One day we finished presenting one of our recorded presentations and it was a little past 3pm when class wrapped up. That evening a few classmates organized a bbq get together at a nearby park and as he was getting prepared to leave he said my name and see you at the party later? I said no sorry I have to work. He said okay have fun flipping those burgers, see ya tomorrow. I said okay, have fun at the party and see ya tomorrow. I added a little something though this day, I said take care ……( his name) we smiled and parted.

Fast forward to the next morning. I worked until 10pm and with closing I got home around 11pm so I was tired, showered and hit the hay. I woke up and drove to school. This particular day seemed odd. I didn’t see his car in the parking lot. I got to class and his seat was unusually empty. Okay, I started getting concerned. It was about 7:52am and I got organized for class and sat down. I asked the girl sitting in front of me if she knew why he’s late or not there, because she was supposedly at last nights party. She turned around and looked at me and said my name, you didn’t hear? I said no heard what? She said there was a bad car accident last night and ….died. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I don’t know if I was in shock or what but I told her I gotta go. I left and went home only to turn on the local radio station to hear the story. I was devastated, distraught and decided to quit college, right then and there. I dropped out. I had a tough day but thought I made the correct decision. I barely ate anything. I was super uncomfortable so I wanted to go in bed. I eventually fell asleep.

I woke up scared and was worried about my future, I remember moments thinking what am I going to do? I was super restless, waking up and falling back to sleep. Then I saw him! He was standing in my room at the foot of my bed! He was as real as life.

He said, “I’m okay, (saying my name) but please go back to school.”He smiled and said, “you’ll be okay.” He suddenly disappeared.

Later, a few friends from school came to my home as they were concerned and wanted to check on me. They told me more details about the crash. It seems he had a beer or two and didn’t want to drive. He was a pretty responsible good guy. He wanted to leave his car and pick it up the next day. He accepted a ride from a couple classmates who overheard he needed a ride. He was in the front passenger seat. The driver apparently also drank a couple beers. He allegedly swerved for an animal and ended up crashing the vehicle into a tree. The driver and my friend were killed and the backseat passenger miraculously survived with non-life threatening injuries. My friend went through the windshield and landed about 100 feet away. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
