General Open1602 - Open Source Anno 1602 Engine Replacement

Thumbnail

Hi guys,

just to let you know, I created an open source engine replacement for Anno 1602 (and History Edition) for me and my friends that I would like to share with you.

(DISCLAIMER: I used AI (Claude) to get this project to the point where it currently is. I totally respect it if your stance on that matter is rather negative, I would still encourage you to try this project out and give it a fair shot)

Content-wise, pretty much everything is already in the game and up and running besides the editor (which might come at a later point). But the old editor is still viable since you can load any Anno 1602 scenario anyway.
This engine replacement comes with a lot of new features and quality-of-life and is built for modern systems. It removes pretty much all hardcoded limitations the original had and enhances many gameplay aspects. Also, all original bugs have been fixed.
Multiplayer has been completely overhauled and runs very smoothly and stable. (I tested it for over 6 hours without any crashes or desyncs).
Full mod support is still being worked on, many points are already there. The goal is to have most of the gameplay aspects removed from the code itself and rather follow a data driven approach for easy modding.

Get the latest release from my Github page or build the latest version yourself (of course, you still need a valid copy like from GoG or the History Edition in order to play it):
https://github.com/x4rd4s/open1602/releases

The features are:

- all original bugs have been fixed
- many quality-of-life features have been added without altering the gameplay and feel
- modern controls (for example Shift+Click for queuing orders (also via minimap), WASD scrolling, seamless zooming)
- up to 12 players supported with automatically scaling world size, pirates and free traders (more colors to choose from added as well)
- increased max world size; choose world size in new game settings menu
- unit and ship caps increases (up to unlimited if you can handle the upkeep)
- game settings menu to customize your endless game more freely like later installments with many additional features
- completely new live statistics screen in the same spirit as Anno 1800 but more advanced
- overhauled trade route system
- enhanced AI
- optional bread production balancing (bread is now the better choice for the late game than meat industry, without devalueing meat and fish)
- free window sizes and all resolutions supported
- proper UI scaling
- flexible multiplayer with ingame chat function (and private chats for some interplayer shenanigans)
- optional victory conditions for endless game mode
- if you would like to play with original 1602 settings, bugs and exploits, there is a button for it (alternatively, pick the ones you would like to activate in a separate menu)
- new help menu with control scheme (just press F1)
- full mod support for new buildings, production chains, units, AI, regions, flags, own campaigns etc. (not fully done yet)
- crossplatform support Windows/Linux/MacOS
- fully open-source under GPL-3

Updates happen pretty much on a daily basis. I will upload new release builds from time to time as well.
Any feedback, critique and especially bugs and issues reported would be highly appreciated :)

Thank you very much and happy sailing!

EDIT: New version 0.3.1 released with more fixes and enhancements.

Question Any tool to slow down the day-night cycle?

Hey, I love the visual day-night cycle in Anno 117. However, I find it too fast and the moving shadows break the immersion.

Do you know a mod or tool to slow this down?

To clarify: I don't want to change the model speed. Just the speed of the artifical day/night cycle...

I already tried searching this sub and the Web but it seems impossible to do...

Keep building yall 🤗

Discussion Tier 2 (Scribes) in the upcoming DLC (Dawn of the Delta) will only have ONE new need/good

Post image
109 Upvotes

Product Needs are:

  1. Bread

  2. Cheese

  3. Sandals

  4. Soap

  5. Brooches

  6. Papyrus Scripts

  7. Olive oil

A bit disappointed honestly. I understand it's the roman path and there needs to be cross-region dependency, but this is a bit too extreme in one direction.

I would have liked one new good in each category at least. And to have cross region dependency on intermediate products instead of just end products (e.g. Cloth, Cushions, Tyrion purple, gold bars etc.).

Or maybe even have the end-products from one region be a part of a new chain in Aegyptus (e.g. Cheese is an intermediate requirement for a food that needs other local goods to make a complex end product).

Anno is about complex production chains and logistics. This was the great thing about oil and electricity (and steamships etc). While it is not possible to have that in AD 117, it should be possible to be ingenious to capture the similar essence of what made 1800 successful.

Tier 2 roman looks kinda boring sadly.

Question Arctic Lost Expedition rewards disappearing (Anno1800)

Disclaimer: I do have some mods (more below).

So, whenever I pick up the lost expedition stuff in the Arctic, looking for scrap and items, I get the item in my airship, but then it immediately disappears. Tried relogging, tried disabling airship item mod, tried building a brand new, vanilla game airship, in the Arctic area, with the airship item mod disabled, and no luck. I've started a new game, with that mod disabled, to do further tests, but I was hoping to see if anyone had encountered a similar issue before and had any ideas

Mods: Airships Use Ship Items (Serp), allowing the usage of sailing and steam ship items in airships; and Military Attention - Ships, adding a couple of new airships. Tried disabling the first one, to no avail. I'm trying a new game without adding that mod at all, to see how it goes, before considering disabling the other and doing another new game.

But, if someone knows for a fact what's going on, I'd appreciate the info

I noticed this structure in the new video introducing the residents of aegyptus and on the live stream on Twitch. I thought it was just ruins placed randomly for decorations. Judging by its name and the way it is placed, it looks like it requires a cliff slot to be placed.

Mod Waders in Latium Cosmetic Mod (anno 117)

Simple cosmetic skin mod 'Wader Refuge.' Residences, taverns, and markets in Latium can be switched to their Albion skins. It does NOT add Waders, it just changes the Liberti tier 1 houses.

Discussion If the game introduces continent mechanics, I will buy it.

Keeping the franchise limited to islands just to "preserve the classic feel" is nonsense at this point.

Introducing continents, borders, and land-based supply lines would also fit the game's theme. I like what I've seen of the Egyptian DLC because it seems to be heading in that direction, introducing large rivers (with their own navigation mechanics) and, at least at first glance, large landmasses.

General Price for dawn of the delta

Has the price for Dawn of the Delta already been communicated? As I’m not interested in the hippodrome dlc, I’m wondering if it would make sense to get the pass, or if I should just buy dawn of the delta seperately.

Bug New Horizons bug?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to unload some silver, tungsten and diamonds on Crown Falls, that I generated in Horai by importing trade licenses from Magnates on Crown Falls, so I can trade stuff in Docklands, TLDR the bulk freighter I'm using to bring the silver, tungsten and diamonds from Horai to Crown Falls won't actually allow me to unload them at another port??? why is this? is this a bug? otherwise what's the point of these things items being in game if oyu can't move them between regions
