Gentle reminder...

Adding the words, "not seeking medical advice" to either the title or body before posting a request for medical advice does not and will not give your post immunity.

This includes questions about how to withdraw, or health concerns related to drinking.

If your question starts with "is it ok to [whatever]" or "is it safe to [whatever]" it is a medical question and will go.

If it starts with "What is your personal experience with [whatever]" - you're probably ok.

No one here is a doctor, they are sure as heck aren't your doctor.

No redditor can offer sincere medical support in this subreddit.

r/askdocs is a better fit if the internet is your only recourse.

Posts seeking medical advice will be removed as will comments.

If You've been a Drinker for years, do not try to stop Cold Turkey

Post image

I had heard this so many times from so many people, but I became the one that didn't listen. I got a new job and was starting Monday, so I decided Saturday night that I was going to quit drinking all together.

Monday came along and I show up to work with jitters and sweats. It's midday and I was talking with my boss and BAM, next thing I remember is waking up in an ambulance. I had a withdrawal induced seizure in my boss's office on day one. I'm lucky I didn't die because people were right there with me.

Go to detox, go to a treatment center, or your own doctor. It's not worth it.

This was the start of a new beginning.

Good morning Family this is a picture of after getting home from detox.

That day was a good day and a start of a new beginning. Things went well for a long time but I traded drugs in for alcohol.

See the problem with me is I always push everything to the limit enough is never enough for me I over do everything every single time.

The drugs I pushed it to numerous OD's and near death but that didn't teach me anything because I kept it up. I kept the drug seen up for many years numerous rehabs and detoxes later I was able to stop. But I picked up alcohol.

Again I was back to pushing everything to the limit. The abuse picked up pretty quick and I went from a full blown addict to a full blown alcoholic.

Now the alcohol went on for many years I became faithful to the alcohol like I was faithful to fetty/opiates. I would wake up 1st thing in the morning damn near waiting at the front door to the liquor store to open at 8am. Just like the dope man would be at my house every morning faithfully. I was either the 1st or 2nd at the LQ every morning if I saw the guy ahead of me on a scooter heading to the liquor store I knew I was late.

This went on for many years until I started getting sick but I still drank through it it got to the point were I would throw up bio and alcohol the 1st two nips the 3rd one I was able to hold down this went on every morning.

1st sleeve at 8am 2nd sleeve at lunch time in the parking lot at work your probably wondering how I did it at work. I would keep 3 to 4 nips in my pockets I worked in a warehouse so it was easy to do i would drink all the way up to 5pm at work.

Then come 5pm I head to the LQ for the ride home. Then I would close the the LQ at 8:45 pm before they closed for my last sleeve to last me until the morning. This routine went on for 5 1/2 yrs str8.

Until one day I was rushed to the hospital with acute fibrosed pancreatitis failure which saved my life, because had it not happened my doctor said I was 1day away from cirossis. So I was grateful to the acute fibrosed pancreatitis because it saved my life.

Again I push everything thing I do to the limit that is bad for me hopefully I can push it to the limit with my sobriety. Today I am 3weex 1yr Alcohol free and 5yrs Drug free hopefully I can over do this.

Thanks for letting me share One Day Forward One Day Behind -Shawn

Really bummed out about my dad drinking again

I don’t want anyone that I know personally to know about this but I just want to get it off my chest as I’m really upset. My dad started the 100 days sober thing about 90 days ago and I was really proud of him as he was drinking near enough everyday. I’ve made an effort to actually get close to him now (spending more time with him) that he started to get sober and as part of this (as his birthday is tomorrow) I spent a good chunk of change (I don’t make much at all) as a birthday present but also just to appreciate that he was getting sober. Anyway, I came downstairs about an hour ago and saw him leaving the house with a can of alcohol — It really upset me as he wasn’t the nicest to me when drunk and that I thought he was getting sober.
I don’t really want to give him the things I’ve bought him now.

Feel ashamed

• Upvotes

I recently went 3 months sober and that’s the longest I’ve been sober since high school.(26m) I went on week bender and ended blacking out at the casino, said some horrible things to complete strangers, lost over 1k and ended letting homeless people smoke crack in my truck. My parents had to come get me in the morning and I was passed out in my truck. I feel completely mortified and feel like I want to crawl out of my own skin. I have horrible anxiety from it and all I want to do is drink again.

Embarrassing life

• Upvotes

I get blackout drunk every single day and run around town having sex with randos and crying to people behind counters. I call 3 random hotlines 5 times each at 4am. I puke on my friends floors and dip
I have to drink the next day to get over the embarrassment of what i can remember from the day before
Im in substance abuse counseling and a bunch of other kinds of therapy but it feels like my mental health is only getting worse.

How can i rebuild?

• Upvotes

19f , Ive ruined my family and the life i had in my small town. Ive only been drinking extremely heavily for 11 months, and ive verbally abused my family, told people things i shouldnt have, and completely destroyed the way i view myself as a person. I want to change before i truly reach the point of no return.
If i can achieve sobriety after inpatient treatment, how can i rebuild the relationship i had with other people and myself?

Struggling to stop

• Upvotes

28 year old female.
I am struggling to not drink every single night.
I drink between 4-6 shooters most nights and more on most weekends.
In the mornings I tell myself that I’m not going to drink tonight and then when it gets close to getting off or when I do get off it’s what I’m thinking about and what I do.
I can go a couple days without but I can’t seem to break the cycle. The last time I did a good chunk was last January for the whole month. Probably haven’t done more than a week this year.
Sure I’m not ruining my relationships or getting into too much trouble but I want to be able to break this cycle of drinking even when I really don’t want to. I’m ruining my own self.
My sleep when I drink is absolute crap and I wake up around 2-3am with raging anxiety and on the nights that I don’t drink my sleep is so refreshing.
Anyone got some tips for me that helped you guys out?

TIA

Looking for advice about sober coaching and sponsorship

• Upvotes

Long story, I’m not a good writer, so bear with me. I also know that it’s probably not the best idea to ask for advice on Reddit, but I don’t have other options.

My husband is an alcoholic, he went through rehab, met his sponsor in rehab who was a sobriety consultant Logan in there. They hit it off, and he seemed to be very helpful to my husband. It was his first sponsor. My husband stayed sober for 3 months, and then this month he relapsed, he slipped three times over the month. I noticed that his relationship with his sponsor cooled off over the last month. And today I learned that my husband secretly from me bought a bike (motorcycle) from his sponsor to help him out financially, its been three weeks, and money was wired, but the bike wasn’t transferred. My husband had a drink today and went bananas saying he is going to file a claim in small court against Logan, because he feels scammed.

Logan seemed to be a decent guy to me. A month after rehab my husband had cancer surgery that went well. Logan was really supportive, he spent time with my husband in the hospital. He is 2 years sober, not doing well financially though. But he seemed to be an open book, told his life story - good, bad and ugly, including being on probation at the moment.

He had a bad knee, it got worse, and he had to take sick leave from his job, it financially strained him. I invited him over several times so he could at least have good family dinner, and do his laundry for free. He had recently had knee surgery, and he is recovering at his cousin’s. Logan and my husband have substantial financial disparity.

I think that my husband feels betrayed. If it’s true or not is a different story. He has massive authority issues, and despise being told what to do, I was happy he found someone he could listen to.

Now, the only person my husband listens to somehow is me again.

So an advice I want to ask if it makes sense for him to hire a sobriety coach so he could get back on his recovery journey. Or is there any other advice you could give me to try and make sure he doesn’t give up on AA after one unfortunate experience with a sponsor.

i have a good self-care, and I’m ok myself. We’ve been together for 18 years. His alcoholism started after our son had a pediatric stroke as a way of coping with the stress of raising a child with disabilities. He is a type of a “happy drunk”, very stupid though. He has been struggling with alcoholism for 11 years, he was sober for 3 of them, relapsed, and trying to get sober again.

Thanks in advance for anyone chiming in and happy to provide more context.

Discarded by an alcoholic, did anyone experience something similar?

Tale as old as time, but 1.5 years ago I started a relationship with someone who I had secretly liked for a long time. He pursued me and I shortly found out he was an alcoholic, and for the next couple of months we went through rehab, relapses, DUI, Jail, etc. Everyone would tell me 🚩, but- he always told me how thankful he was for me to stay by his side, how he needed me, how he loved me.

He is now 10 months sober. I am so proud. I slowly started to let go of the fear of alcohol killing him. But he started to change the longer he was sober. He became more critical of me, my life, my job, how much money I was making. It was odd because it came out of nowhere ( I use to be a bartender but changed to daycare teacher earlier in our relationship, he relapsed after a few months and I quit my bartending job to be with him constantly for 1.5 weeks to support his withdraw- I know it was a mistake now)

5 days ago, he revealed over a short call he just used me to help with his sobriety. He was playing video games during the whole call.

He also said I was a daycare teacher and he was a lawyer and that’s another reason he didn’t want to be with me. For 1.5 years we’ve been talking about marriage, buying a house, having kids, etc. I truly believed it and now my reality and perception of the past is leaving me heartbroken.

I told him I would not beg him to stay but asked why he was being so mean after I stayed by his side through everything, his reply was

“ that’s on you girl”.

I was shocked.

He yelled bye and hung up. I was blindsided. I still am. He begged me not to leave him through his recovery and now that he is finally almost a year sober he genuinely thinks he’s better than me and discarded me like nothing.

Has anyone else experienced this with a newfound sober person? Is he just an asshole or is this connected to his sobriety journey?

I feel like I'm not myself anymore

Please do let me know if this is the wrong way to do this, it's my first post and I'm still getting to grips with Reddit!

I really struggle around alcohol. I used to be in an abusive relationship with an alcoholic and swore to myself I would never drink like that, but I really struggle to stop once I've started.

I can't seem to just have one or two, and any kind of social event I go to, I feel like I need to have something to feel less anxious and more confident.

The hangovers are AWFUL. I feel like I'm literally dying, my mental health is in bits for a good few days to a week afterwards and it's affecting my relationship, my parenting and my job.

I would love to stop completely. I have tried several times in the past and I seem to make excuses each time it comes to another event or social outing.

I love the way it feels when I've had a drink, all my stresses from daily life seem less, I feel happier for those few hours and more energetic and happier, but the aftermath isn't worth it.

I want to be a better partner, a better parent and put more pride in my work.

For context, I'm in my mid 30s, have two incredible children, one of whom has learning disabilities and takes up a lot of time, and a job I need to stay responsible and accountable for.

Currently on day 2 of the hangover and feeling absolutely sh*t. I really need to stop completely, I've tried only having a few but it never works. It's time to stop. I've been to my GP who didn't really help at all, he thought as I don't drink every day that it wasn't as hard to stop 😕 I just don't feel like I know who I am anymore, the impact drink has on my mental health (and physical!) is really harmful.

Please, if you have any tips to stay sober when there are social events, have any good apps to keep accountable or just any advice going forward, I would really appreciate it.

Here's to a new start 🤞

Post sobriety sweet tooth

I developed a major sweet tooth when I got sober 3 years ago and I think it’s finally subsiding. I have recently started enjoying my salty treats and foods with a kick in it. Did it take this long for anyone else?

Lowest point of my life

Showed up to work drunk after boss told me I shouldn’t come in, caught by higher ups and flushed my best job ever down the drain completely banned from job site, lost a girl who really truly cared in the process, proceeded to drink more and total my car on the interstate 3 months after getting it, went to jail blew like .218 a day later I think, borrowed a thousand for bond, now currently dealing with first DUI case, nearly overdosed on laced cocaine, got in with a bad crowd started hustling to pay rent, almost got stabbed to death fighting on the street, meanwhile taken for a vulnerable fool while I was drunk got my key stolen and motel room was burglarized during the scuffle everything of value stolen, back at moms, all in one months time.

This guilt and shame has been eating me alive I can’t stop replaying these two specific days where I got messed up and ruin everything. I could have killed someone driving drunk like that. I toss and turn for hours thinking about these decisions I’ve made and wake up immediately thinking about the decisions I made. Ever since I was a teenager anytime I’m doing good I bend to the pressures of life and completely self-destruct. I saw so many warning signs, got so many chances this time and I was aware of what was on the line but I failed yet again. I’ve been everywhere alcohol can bring you from county jail many times, self admitted to the psych ward, hospital for seizures, rehab, halfway houses, whole bit but it never clicks and I fumble. Every. Single. Time.

I’m turning 25 soon but this problem has been a mainstay for almost half my life and I’m just simply tired. I can confidently say this is the lowest I have ever been in my entire life and that says alot. I don’t even know how I’m alive right now but I can’t fight the feeling that maybe that guy should have stuck me in the throat like he said he would a few weeks ago or I should have just hit a barrier head on that day. I have a job coming up with good pay but I set myself back so much this time further than ever. Feeling like this is all in vain in the first place because deep down Lord knows I’ll probably end up giving in and doing something like this again down the line like every other time. I can’t remember the last year I didn’t black out and completely turn my life on its head behind those decisions I make during.

I use childhood trauma, stresses of life, and plain everyday inconveniences as an excuse. My family is fed up with this my brother and sister have point blank given up because they feel like they’re talking to a brick wall with me. I can’t even muster the strength to make it through a months worth of meetings or get to know those who offer help to me at NA and AA. I’m tired of being an embarrassment to everyone. I don’t possibly know how to move on from this pain I am exhausted living this life I don’t know what to do I can’t see a way out for the life of me. I hate myself and the way that I am. Thank you for listening I hope the best to anyone who bothered to read.

Young woman and drink out of anxiety about forming new friendships. How to stop asap.

Ever since i can remember, i’ve had a mild drinking problem which started with my ex and my father.

I remember not caring when people tried to get to know me better at my ex’s 21st party and waking up very hungover the morning after the party.

I also remember feeling very lightheaded usually after 2/3 beers or sometimes even 2 merlot glasses when socialising with my father and his girlfriend. It’s embarrassing that I’ve began this young and want to cut back straight away, but not stop drinking for good as i genuinely think it will affect me forming new friendships and will stop the coping mechanism.

Any advice from former alcoholics/people with former drinking problems would be appreciated. I will do my best to read all comments.

Mom drunkenly broke two vertebrae

I, 35f, have a 60 year old mother who fell down a flight of steps, drunk. She’s been an alcoholic for years, keeps drinking a secret or tries to at least. Sunday night, assuming she was drinking, fell down a flight of steps into the basement. Monday morning, someone took her to the hospital as I was leaving. She broke two vertebrae, she’s giving no one any information, doesn’t want anyone seeing her. She’s approximately 5’3, has alcohol problems, will take anything that’s given to her, on blood thinners( or was), on generic anxiety 100mg meds. Doctors are surprised she’s not paralyzed. I, do not want to see her in the hospital or even when she gets home but, I need to know the full extent of her fall, talk to the nurses to see what meds they will be giving her, etc. Can I go in or call to talk to someone about her drinking and when/if she mixes her pain meds. I thought about taking her pain meds, if given any, and locking them in my safe so she doesn’t overdue do it. I’m trying to figure out how to safely navigate this and will be asking the nurses about outpatient AA or something. I don’t want to go in there and cause a scene but I think for safety measures for her and the people that live with her, it’s important.

Edit: I should have worded this better but, I will not be withholding her meds, I just do not want her having a full bottle in her possession. I wanted to speak with her doctors to get the schedule they have her on with pain management and continue that at home and add a few if needed. There has been past experiences when someone is talking about their pain management in front of her and she’ll come to me asking if I can get her any or even asking for mine(I have marfans).

My dog is enough for right now

And I mean THIS MINUTE. I’m ready to go to the store and get a pint of Taaka. But right now, my dog is on my lap and I don’t want to move him.
I’ve been struggling for weeks now. But for RIGHT NOW, he’s enough.
Please just remember that - it doesn’t take a bucket list item or some AA crap, sometimes it’s just a dog on your lap that gives you 5 more minutes to get to the next 5 minutes.

Why are these people ( functional Alcoholics ) verbally (critical ) and emotionally abusive (silent treatment, withholding affection ) even when they are not drinking?

Is this a common behavior of them?

I need to quit.

I know I’m an old story. No need to reply. Just will help to write it out. I’m a 40m. I’m by all means healthy looking. 5’11”, 190lbs. I was 215 early this year. Was 170 late last year and was 230 around October 2024. So I clearly fluctuate I weight.

I know how to be healthy. I know what it takes. But I can’t stop drinking. Sometimes I’ll start as early as 5am and slow role. Other times I’ll wait till 6pm and move quick. But many days I can get close to a half handle of vodka.

Over the past year and a half I’ve started having skin issues. Looks like hives but will go away if I start drinking again.

Many days I see blood in my stool. Bright red, and thought maybe a hemorrhoid or something, but it’s happened for over a year so not likely.

Just thinking I’m quickly dying. I have a 12yr old and 8yr old boy. Good kids. But I’ve failed.

Does anyone have any similar physical experience to drinking like this? Can I recover?

How to get parts of me back?

It’s been almost a year of no alcohol! I’m really proud of myself and I wanted to look back to see if there was a change. Everybody’s always posting before and afters… and it’s always for the better. I was met with intense emotions because for me it’s the opposite. I look dull, sad, like my light went out whereas when I was drinking I was glowing, full of energy. I haven’t shared with many people around me I even got sober and if I do I downplay it like “just taking a year off”because I think I have shame for even needing to stop drinking. I know deep down I can never be a “social drinker” so when I even think of maybe a few won’t hurt after a year I shut it down! So needless to say this new-ish journey has been very isolating and posting this is probably my first conversation about sobriety and I’m not sure what I’m even asking.
