Social To everyone asking how to socialize at UofT: TALK TO THE PEOPLE IN YOUR CLASSES AND BE CONSISTENT

This post was initially much shorter, but I was feeling bored and the creative spirit took the reigns. Alas, such is life.

As much as I low-key enjoy the ritual of pouring myself a bowl of popcorn, opening Reddit, and reading all the early 1st semester experience commiserating, I'm also high-key annoyed by seeing the same post for the umpteenth time a la Buzz Lightyear clone meme. I like variety in my Reddit ragebait, and even a good slice of matcha crepe cake becomes unappetizing after consuming it so often.

For those of you who have decided to come to UofT to get a world class education, rather than just partying all the time, ignoring your work, being forced to drop out around the holidays because your grades are lower than the Mariana Trench, then blaming the university for allegedly sabotaging you, your classes are your best possible environment to connect with your fellow slightly more intelligent than a chimpanzee primates.

Presumably you are studying something that you actually enjoy or have some mild interest in, rather than doing exactly what mom and dad told you to study. If your parents strongarmed you to go into engineering but you truly love film, that's a whole other discussion and will require some soul searching and potentially family therapy.

The basis of most human connection nowadays comes through shared interests and values. This is a fact supported by at least one (1) corpus of psychology literature. The courses you're taking already filter for this to an extent, because, again, ideally you're studying something you care about and you're not a masochist.

Performative drinking at a venue with mysteriously sticky floors that probably haven't been cleaned in the past year and contain a collection of undocumented microorganisms that would frighten epidemiologists, ignoring your limits, and chatting up the people you live in close proximity to about the weather (so how about that climate change, eh?) while waiting to use the one sink you all need to brush your teeth at (please brush your teeth and don't go out with bad breath) doesn't necessarily lead to any meaningful connection. You might become acquaintances, but presumably you're aiming for something with a bit more zest.

Coursework at UofT is difficult, and that difficulty is another basis for connection. Throughout most of human history, we connected with each other because of shared hardship. Genuine hardship, such as intellectually strenuous subjects and work schedules, for example. Missing out on a frat party on one specific weekend, which is identical to the frat parties on every other weekend (don't worry, the beer will still be lukewarm) isn't hardship, I'm afraid.

"But how do I actually talk to people in my classes?! Nobody ever wants to talk!" says the choir of Buzz Lightyear clones lamenting about their "unique" circumstances. The answer: just start.

You'd be surprised how much the person sitting next to you is starved for acknowledgement of their mere existence. A random "hello" will probably be the most unsolicited contact they've had in a week. The barrier to entry is lower than it's ever been.

"But what if they think I'm cringe?" or "Everyone is so cringe!", which is the next verse of the clone choir song.

If you're actively worried either of these things, you don't want connection bad enough. Either that or you might want to look into therapy.

I cannot tell you how much social media has poisoned people's perceptions of themselves and others. These platforms have fed people the most ironclad set of lies that every government psyop wishes it could replicate. Its users have been perfectly manipulated into thinking they they are unlikable/unlovable, and that everyone else is so much better or so much worse and should be perceived as a threat. This primes you to be a good little consumer that will sign up for things like dating apps, paid meetup groups, and overpriced fitness clubs, all to solve your woes. Meanwhile, you can connect with someone FOR FREE* (included in the price of your tuition costs) and walk away with something even more meaningful. This is an even crazier value for money than the Japanese food truck in front of Robarts that will sell you an entire filling tempura roll for under $8.

Side note: please support this truck. This is my lifeblood and I want them to stay in business as long as possible. Also, the lady who owns it is genuinely one of the kindest people I've ever come across and brightens my day. My waistline grows, my wallet empties, but my heart is full.

Getting back on track, people are unique and will have their own set of quirks. It's ok to talk to someone who is a little bit different than you. You'll be ok, muffin. In fact, you'll probably be better off for it if you can make enough room in your life to accept others from where they're coming from. If you offer them grace, they will probably return the favour. Well, at least they should if they're even remotely socialized.

If you talked to someone last week, go up and talk to them again. A huge part of connection is consistency. Don't be one of those weirdos who pretends like they suddenly don't know someone they've spoken to 3 times prior.

Also, all of this advice applies to anyone in any year of study. If you're in your last year at this university and are saddened by not having made any friends, you can do everything I've mentioned above and still achieve success. The party ain't over till it's over.

I am living proof that this strategy works, and I'm no social butterfly by any means. I met one of my closest friends and one of the best people I've ever met by just bantering consistently over the course of many weeks. There was no cinematic event and major declaration that marked the transition point between us being acquaintances and friends. It was the slow, messy, nonlinearity of human connection.

Go out there, talk to people, make friends, and come back here to post some more novel rage bait to keep me entertained ❤️

Life Advice Update: Dad demanded my ACORN login / academic history now staying at a shelter, looking for advice/next steps

A little while ago I posted asking for tactical ways to handle my dad demanding my ACORN credentials and full academic transcript. For context, I’m an adult student paying 100% of my own tuition through OSAP, living at home, but dealing with severe mental health issues that tanked my recent academic performance. And right now I’m on academic suspension so I don’t have access to osap money or a job to pay my parents rent or find a place.

Things escalated, and I ended up leaving/getting kicked out. Spent last night in the hospital because I fell sick, and I’m currently staying at a shelter but they don’t let you stay in your room after 8am so I’m killing time at a cafe.

Not posting this looking for a pity party partly just updating since folks were invested, but mostly looking for real guidance from anyone who has had to navigate sudden homelessness while being a U of T student:

Emergency Aid / College Registrar: How responsive is the emergency bursary process right now, and what’s the best way to contact my registrar/dean of students when you don’t have a stable address? Also am I even eligible for that while suspended?

Academic Accommodations / Late Withdrawal: Given that I’ve been dealing with documented clinical diagnoses and now acute housing instability, what are the chances of petitioning for late withdrawals (WDR) or deferrals through accessibility services/registrar? I already had some petitions but paused some of them because of what’s going on with my life right now.

Shelter / Transitional Housing in the GTA: Any recommendations for youth/student friendly transitional spaces or resources where you can actually study or rest safely?

Thanks to everyone who gave advice on the original post. Take care of your mental health school is never worth your sanity or your safety, but also ask for help before it gets as bad as my situation.

Question My Uber Driver Was Proud of My Degree but Disappointed in His Own Son’s…

I recently had a conversation with my Uber driver about university, and when I told him what I was studying and what degree I'd be graduating with, he told me he was proud of me for pursuing a Bachelor of Science. He then mentioned that his son is currently studying toward a Bachelor of Arts, and despite doing a lot of research, he feels disappointed because he believes a BSc offers better job opportunities and that his son will struggle to find employment with a BA. I do understand his concerns because certain science-related fields do offer more direct career opportunities, but I honestly felt so bad hearing how disappointed he sounded. His son genuinely enjoys his program, and shouldn't that count for something? Getting into university, pursuing a degree, and working toward graduation are accomplishments in themselves. I feel like we put so much emphasis on the title of a degree that we forget to appreciate the effort and dedication behind earning one. A Bachelor of Arts isn't automatically less valuable than a Bachelor of Science, and employment opportunities depend on so much more than just those two letters.
I just think parents should be proud of their children for pursuing higher education, especially when they're studying something they're passionate about. You can be concerned about their future without making them feel like their accomplishments aren't enough.
I'm curious what everyone else thinks. Is a bachelor of Science really that much more valuable than a Bachelor of Arts, or do people place too much importance on the degree designation?????!
😭

Courses I got my hmb and bch grades back and I haven't done well

Title says it, I have never felt this worse about my performance. And I really did work hard, solved practice questions, midterms, and worked super super hard for both courses. My Midterm grades are horrible. Like can't even say I did minutely well. My confidence is at an all time low and I genuinely can't begin to explain or express what I am going through. My financial situation is not the best and i am an international student so the weight on my shoulders has dramatically increased I have never felt this pressurised. I have not partied a single day of the semester and tried to be as consistent as possible. My mental health os deteriorating by the minute and i genuinely have no idea what to do.

I'm in High School If uoft actually that bad or are people overreacting?

Im in gr 12 rn, applying to life sci to all 3 campuses, my preference is utsg. My tentative career goal is medicine. Everyone is telling me to not even consider uoft as an option. I’m interested in uoft because of the research opportunities, possibility for an interdisciplinary route with the humanities and its just a very pretty campus. Are the horror stories actually true? Is it truly impossible to maintain a high gpa? Is uoftears an accurate description? Please let me know, this is a super confusing and stressful time.

Social Haloween party with no friends, any help for fellow student? 🥹

Hey guys this may sound very chudlike and stupid but please gear me out. I dont have any party-going friends. I'm a second year and I've never been to a house party or club including during high school, and I was hoping I could find some friends to go to a party with for haloween. I honestly have no clue what the party scene is like other than the common warning like avoiding drinking too much and watching your back at frats. I'm still 18 but I genuinely want to try coming out of my comfort zone and go to a party in my costume.

I'm in High School Computer Science Alternate Admission Category acceptance

How does the alternate admission work? If I put mathematical and physical sciences as the alternate category does it get reviewed immediately or only if I get a rejection from CS? Does it put me in the same pool as people who applied straight to MPS?

I am trying to determine whether or not I should apply only to MPS because I know I will get in, or apply for CS, risk not getting in, and then have MPS as the safety net, I just don't know if this route will make it harder to get into MPS.

Jobs/Work Study Regretting my choice of picking uoft over waterloo

I'm in third year of economics and have no relevant work experience. I've tried applying for RA positions, cold emailing profs, and applying to internships, but have had no success.

I feel like if I were in waterloo coop, I would've had a few internships by now. Whereas here at uoft, I think I'm going to graduate with nothing.

Does anybody have any advive for landing an internship, especially with no prior experience? I feel like I'm running out of time, and I'm worried it'll affect my future.

Rant Robarts Starbucks: rant and complaint & why im never going to that place EVER again

just here to ramble and complain.

My experience at the Robarts Starbucks has just overall been unpleasant. The lines were always long, and I kept getting snapped at by the staff there (one time I was just asking if I could use my points — it was a 0.3-second question… the other time I respectfully told them they had made my order wrong). I'd like to think perhaps they're having a bad day. but I don't find it a particularly enjoyable experience to be treated rudely for multiple times + have to wait in line for 30 minutes + spend so much money on a mid drink.

The only reasons I went so often were that sometimes I needed a caffeine boost, wanted to feel a bit better by succumbing to some capitalistic consumerism, or just convienience, really. And I used to like Starbucks! Now I think about it, it was probably because of how nice the staff were in my hometown. Removing that part, Starbucks is just such an overpriced and mid place to go for coffee. I really have to try to figure out substitutes — maybe some cheap Amazon matcha and instant coffee or whatever, or energy drinks.... <- anyone got any affordable matcha recs? or how to get energy drinks for cheap?

I'm never getting anything from Starbucks, especially Robarts Starbucks :( That place makes me miserable and upset. I get coffee to feel happier, not to get snapped at :(

Question Failed CHM135 Term Test 1 (Looking for a bit of advice)

Hi guys!

Sorry, I don't really post on Reddit, so I'm kind of new to this. I just need some advice and a morale boost. I really bombed the CHM135 Term Test 1, like, horrifically. Honestly, it's kind of embarrassing. I have 90s+ in all my other classes, yet chemistry seems to be dragging me through the mud.

I never took chemistry in high school, so I can see why CHM135 would be a big learning curve for me, since I've barely studied it before. Because of other courses/circumstances, I had only a week to study, so I crammed; in the end, I understood the *why*, but I couldn't apply it to the questions because I had so little time. I know where I went wrong, and I want to use this failure as an opportunity to improve, no matter how bad I feel about it right now. I'm honestly looking for advice on how to move forward, because this course feels like my biggest failure right now, even though I need it for my specialist. Has anyone else recovered from a horrific midterm in CHM135/any other course) and raised their grade to at least 80? I feel so lost, even though I'm trying not to.

Transfers Transferring from Mac to UofT, is it possible? Advice wanted

Hi. I’m first year undergrad at Mac, and while it’s a lovely school, I’m not happy with it and would like to move back to Toronto to be closer to my family. I wanted to know if anyone had ever done it before. This isn’t a spur of the moment decision because I’m not making any friends or doing badly in school (it’s first year, and first year is difficult for everyone, I know this) but I am genuinely, just unhappy. No way to say it differently. Would appreciate some advice! Thank you :)

Question How to do dense readings? I’m in a doctorate course this fall and the readings are dense in the sense of critical thinking and reading analysis

As opposed to length of pages. If you’re a masters or PhD student, how’d you get through it all? It’s a political science/SJE related course if that matters. Thanks yall!
