To be short and precise : the game feels just right. Gameplay and movement feels so good (had some inFAMOUS flashbacks), combat is fast and responding, the story is fun and sometimes moving and overall the game is a really good addition to the Remedyverse.
Took me 39h without changing any difficulty settings. If you can’t decide between playing it or not, trust me, play it (but pleeeeaaaase play the first CONTROL before).
So now for a longer review :
The game in itself is a nice new point of view on the world of CONTROL. We learn a lot about the entities previously encountered in the first game and the lore and the collectibles are satisfying to discover and analyse. But that’s where I find a first “negative” point : the game doesn’t have enough disclosure I think. Sure the main story is great, the archives helps a ton of hardcore fans to understand what’s truly going on, but we don’t get to see the full picture or the end of the Manhattan chapter. Per example :
The state of Jesse at the end of the game is for me disappointing. I understand the stakes, her willing to protect her brother after watching him being in a coma for seven years, but I feel like it’s a bit easy. I mean now they can redo the installement of Resonant but with inverted protagonists. And again I understand, it leave an open door for Remedy, as they should do, but it felt a little under underwhelming, especially after all we’ve gone through.
Another thing I with they could’ve explored more is the Resonants. They’re the heart of the game and they’re all great (except for the last two but that’s another point to get to) but I feel like they could’ve been used more. Yes they shape the world, yes they give Dylan powers, but once finishing the game I felt like I could’ve used more of them. Maybe one or two side quests with secret resonant, or a boss rush mode (hopefully it’ll come one day). But that’s not a bad thing, wanting more, it proves that the game is well designed.
Secondly, I feel like the game could use a bit more balance, especially for the abilities. I think Inferno is a good example, it works too well and you can just get it 5 hours into the game and not care about other abilities. And you shouldn’t, the variety of build, a little under my expectations, is still good and gives you plenty of room to play with.
To talk about gameplay and balance more, I wish the Resonants were more than what they are. Some of them , especially the Co-Director and the Hedron were a bit disappointing, especially for endgame boss fights. The Hedron could’ve been so much more than just a field filled with adds to kill, and despite the fact that the ending is great, it doesn’t fit well (for me).
Some other thing could’ve been a bit more, but overall this is for me the best game I’ve played this year, without a doubt. And I tell that things could’ve been more, but it’s more, not better, I just wish to get more of this game. I haven’t talked about the map that is mind blowing, the sound design is top notch, visuals are incredible. Give the game a try, you’ll be in for a ride. Hopefully Resonant will get the same treatment as CONTROL and we’ll get 2 DLC’s.
