Hey everyone!
I’m planning my first solo trip to Sri Lanka from November 11 to 19, flying in and out of Colombo , from India. I’m looking for a relaxed, authentic solo-travel experience — beautiful beaches, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, meeting fellow travelers, and discovering places that aren’t overly touristy.
I’m not trying to rush through every attraction. I’d rather spend time in a few beautiful places, enjoy the ocean, meet interesting people, and go with the flow.
My tentative itinerary
● Nov 11: Arrive in Colombo around 5:15 PM and stay near Negombo/Colombo.
● Nov 12: Travel down to the south coast and settle into Weligama.
● Nov 13: Explore Galle and Unawatuna.
● Nov 14: Visit Kanneliya Rainforest for an easy guided forest/waterfall trek.
● Nov 15: Explore Ahangama and Midigama, possibly try surfing.
● Nov 16: Spend time around Mirissa and explore the surrounding coastline.
● Nov 17: Keep the day flexible for beaches, sea activities, or a hidden gem I discover along the way.
● Nov 18: Head back towards Negombo and spend the night near the airport.
● Nov 19: Fly back to Chennai around 1:30 PM.
I’m considering renting a scooter or motorbike to explore the coast, subject to the required licence/permit and local rules.
I’d love your recommendations!
1. Hidden gems: What are some beautiful, lesser-known beaches, coves, viewpoints, villages, natural swimming spots, or local places around the south coast that are worth visiting?
2. Best hostels for solo travelers: Which hostels would you recommend in Weligama, Ahangama, Midigama, Mirissa, or Unawatuna? I’d love somewhere social where it’s easy to meet people, join spontaneous plans, go out for food, or find travel buddies — but not a party hostel every single night.
3. Snorkeling and scuba diving: Where are the best places along this route for snorkeling or scuba diving? I’m especially interested in clear water, marine life, and a good beginner-friendly scuba experience. Is November a good time for these activities on the south coast, or would you recommend a different location?
4. Surfing and other sea activities: I’m interested in trying surfing, kayaking, freediving, or anything else fun on or in the water. Which places are best for beginners, and are there any activities or local operators you’d genuinely recommend?
5. Itinerary feedback: Does this route make sense for a chill solo beach-vibe trip, or am I moving around too much? Would you change the number of nights in any place, skip somewhere, or add a destination? I’m also wondering whether Kanneliya Rainforest is worth the detour or if there’s a better nature experience nearby.
6. November weather: What should I realistically expect on the south coast during these dates? I know the weather can be unpredictable, so I’d appreciate advice on beaches, snorkeling, and surfing conditions around mid-November.
7. Local experiences: Any favourite cafés, small local restaurants, sunset spots, beach bonfires, community activities, or places where solo travelers naturally end up meeting people?
I’m happy to hear recommendations beyond my itinerary, as long as they make sense for these dates and don’t turn the trip into a hectic checklist. I’d also appreciate tips for finding halal food along the route.
If you’ve travelled solo in Sri Lanka or live there, what would you do differently if you had these 8 nights?
Thanks a lot! Really looking forward to experiencing Sri Lanka. 🌴🌊
