What I'd do differently next time: I had a rough list, but I didn't have a route. I bounced between buildings inefficiently and burned out by mid-afternoon. If you're buying across categories — say, accessories, a phone, and some components — the order you visit them in saves you hours. I ended up helping another confused-looking foreigner find the screen protector floor in SEG Communications (2–3F, single-digit prices, not the ground floor) and honestly, having someone who's been there once already is worth more than any Google Map pin.

Some of my best supplier finds never came from Alibaba. In 2018, on my way to a meeting in Zhongshan, I noticed many shops on the street making electric hotplates. I walked in, talked with the owners, and found the factory I worked with for the whole project. In China, same-industry factories cluster together, so walking the streets and opening doors can beat a fifteenth RFQ.

Just wanted to give a shout-out to my friend Rey, especially with October coming up and the Canton Fair bringing many visitors to Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Rey isn’t on Reddit, so I thought I’d share my experience here.

I met Rey through Rednote and arranged a last-minute tour with her during my trip to Shenzhen in August. I already had another tour booked, but her plan sounded interesting, so I decided to try it — and I’m really glad I did.

What I liked about Rey was that she actually tried to understand what I was interested in. I’m into tech, entrepreneurship, manufacturing, and e-commerce, so she didn’t just take me sightseeing.

She introduced me to a local engineering team that designs and manufactures hardware products, which helped me understand Shenzhen’s tech and manufacturing ecosystem much better. We also visited the DJI and Xiaomi flagship stores before I continued my trip to Hong Kong.
