5e Quickened Increased Attribute and Background Count

Hello!

A few sessions into a new game and it has been a long time since I ran Shadowrun. We are playing 5e and one of the new guys did a bunch of research and made a mage that has...well a lot of quickened spells. Research has shown that he is doing things by the book but next time I need to maybe ban that part of the book but I don't like to make changes like that midgame. When I was looking up how to handle it, background count came up and the only thing I haven't been able to figure out is if it matters at all for quickened increased attributes. Dude has...all of this relevant attributes at augmented max via quickened spells. I know that background count reduces the force of quickened spells and that increased attribute has to be at a force equal to the affect attribute to work. So my question is if the background count reduced the force of a quickened increased attribute to bellow the min needed would it stop working until it recovered?

Just for fun

Nevermind Batman. I want to know who would be in the Villains line-up, and what would be their class/abilities?

Doesn't even need to be NPCs, it can be a TV show in the game world.

I'm thinking Penguin would be an adept, Riddler would be a decker, Poison Ivy would be a shaman of some kind...

Is it a bad idea to have a shadowrunner with a former background Lonestar?

• Upvotes

I've been listening to a shadowrun novel and because of that I keep wanting to make a Character either still part of Lone star or has ties to it, but I've never played the game before, and I'm worried I'd end up making trouble for both my team and GM if I were to try this

6e Street Wyrd Custom Spells?

Has anybody come up with fun ideas for spells to build with these rules?

I looked and then realized I'm way less creative than I thought. Maybe a touch range metal/electrical manipulation for unlocking every door when the decker is busy/pouting.

5e Questions about the 5e character Archetypes

So I'm planning a 5e one shot soon and I've decided to basically take some of the character archetypes and just rebuild them in chummer. It's going pretty ok. However I've noticed for some archetypes it gives options that just aren't a thing.

The first I noticed were for the street shaman he apparently has the conjuring skill at 6. But from what I can tell there is no conjuring skill. There is a conjuring skill group but the archetype is very clear about it being the indivudal skill conjuration. I assume they actually mean summoning. Now why I don't think it's the skill group is well when it is a skill group it says skill group.

Now the second I noticed is the combat mage. He's a human who is apparently a troll poser. I don't think that's a thing. We have Orc and Elf posers but no Troll. Honestly might just change this one to orc poser

There are probably some other mistakes I guess I've not caught yet I just wanted to ask am I missing anything about these?

in third edition normal firearm shooting at a vehicle halves the power and decreases damage code by one level. i dont understand the wording. if a weapon is using avm or apds does it ignore only the decrease of damage code or both the decrease of weapon power and damage code?

Flavor Fiction (Fan Fic) Hostage situation

Okay I'm a bit of a bind, I'm surrounded by Lone Star in hostage situation. Basically the job was to break into some data storage site and make an extraction but my Sammy went and shot someone and my Decker got their brain fried and the alarms alerted The Star and now I'm surrounded got a dead Decker and my Sammy is out of commission due a sleep spell(don't worry I geeked the mage that did it) but now I don't know how to get out because one fo the hostages is my Client, a jerk named Hans Brackhaus and who is telling me to keep stalling for time but how long can I keep this up before Lone Star sends in SWAT? Can anyone give me any ideas how to get out of this?!

Newbie Help Looking to maybe get into Shadowrun on tabletop

Im a long time veteran player of Pathfinder and love these sort of technomagical Cyberpunk-ey settings, and have a handful of friends in that same vein, and we've been tossing around the idea of trying Shadowrun. Id be DMing as the only one with any DM experience, and was wondering what exactly the difficulty curve for learning SR is as both a player and GM, what all we need to play, and any relevant information starting out. Also i can get some of the games free on Playstation, would playing those be a good way to dip my feet into the setting?

Anarchy Edition Shadowrun Anarchy 2.0 -I have a few questions

Hi, I'm currently reading through Shadowrun Anarchy 2.0. Coming from SR4A myself, a lot of the streamlining makes a lot of sense. I have a few questions though:

  1. There's no Drain for spellcasting/sorcery? It's just a justification for risk dice?

  2. Is there any mechanical difference between a Shaman and a Hermetic Mage other than that the former uses Charisma for Summoning and the latter uses Logic? (In SR4A, Logic limited the number of foci you could bind, while Charisma limited the number of spirits you could bind. I dont see anything of the sort here.)

  3. Seems like Adepts and Magicians really don't mesh well with augmentation? Say, no more than one piece of bioware? (I don't consider this a flaw, necessarily. But it seems like there's a harder line between augmentation and magic than in SR4A.)

  4. Does burst-fire do anything? I found something about full-auto allowing you to spend Edge for suppressing fire, but that's it.

  5. Do players and the GM essentially negotiate how risky an action is to determine the number of risk dice?

Thanks!

Anarchy 2.0 for other IPs?

I don't post on Reddit a lot and this is my first post on this subreddit (I have posted on the Anarchy subreddit too) but I was curious about reflavouring the system for other IPs.

I've been on the hunt for a good system for Mass Effect that isn't too crunchy or to handwavey like Fate and Anarchy 2.0 seems like it could hit the feel of ME.

I have the PDF and briefly skimmed it but haven't dived deeper yet.

Do you people here think it would be a good fit to run Mass Effect?

Any information and points on a rough idea on how it could be done and how it would or wouldn't be a good fit would be greatly appreciated

5e Horses (and Centaurs) are weirdly slow

So, I've recently got Centaurs on my mind, so I've been re-reading the rules around them, when I realized they have a movement rate of ×1/×4/+4. And regular horses have the same movement rate, for the matter. Which got me thinking – that's awfully slow for a horse, since a normal Metahuman qlready has ×2/×4 /+2, which means aside from sprinting, a normal human apparently is faster when walking, and just as fast when running as a horse is... that doesn't sound right.

Can anyone clarify this for me? Am I misunderstanding this, or otherwise missing something?

4e Hiding a file on a device doesn't exist in the rules

I'm newish to Shadowrun, I've run a bit of 4e and a little 5e many years ago and I've retained very little when it comes to the more confusing and involved rules.

The first run the players are on is meant to be a simple "pick up package > hide contents of datachip on contents of package so a basic "has this been tampered with" scan doesn't ping > deliver package to destination" job. The job being more than it seemed to the players aside, the most frustrating part of the run so far has been me, the GM, trying to find any rules or even close enough so I can alter them for my needs, that even remotely go into "hiding/hidden files" or even "files directly on the physical device".

I've got access to the books in the shadowrun 4e humble bundle that was available a few months ago as well as the SR4A and 5e core book both physical. I've scoured the SR4A and unwired over and over for anything even remotely explaining what a "file" is after the actions and program lists only go as far as encryption (means the file is found but can't be accessed), edit (editing a file doesn't help) and stealth program (which would be a running program on a device that is turned on to put the files on and then turned back off for delivery).

I am so lost. I've checked through the reddit trying to find anything that could help me GM fiat something and best I've been able to find is someone sharing that in Data Trails, a 5e splatbook, that "files are generally stored in cloud storage and what is a file is only explained in a vague and undefined way".

So I'm lost. My sessions are fortnightly so I have some time to scour more books and resources to figured something out. One of my players, the non matrix of the 3 (got an Android AI hacker (think QC comic for those that know), a Night one rigger and a yakuza street samurai), suggested to do the shadowrun/cyberpunk/matrix equivalent of just placing the datachip contents on the device and then scrubbing the registry of any and all existence of said contents. And that sounds like a thing that would totally happen in the shadowrun universe and yet nothing even remotely about that either.

So I'm very lost and quite frustrated at the rules and sadly what feels so limiting for how complicated and involved matrix rules and interactions are for 4e.

If anyone has any information (directing to where that information is from would be greatly appreciated) on how to hide a file not using an agent using stealth, how to detect hidden files not hidden by an agent using stealth (so I can reverse engineer it) or even just "what actually is a file" in a quantifiable state especially on a physical device not the matrix/cloud.

Tl;dr - I'm newish to GMing 4e and "what actually is a file on a device" is impossible to find anything about and it's frustrating.

Is she an Otaku/Technomancer supremist?

Flavor (Art) Bugstomping

Post image

Hi everyone. Wanted to share art I got of my Shadowrun character, a combat adept, fighting a Flesh-Form Warrior-Caste Beetle Spirit.

The aura around her is from Mentor's Mask (Her Mentor Spirit is Fox) + Mystic Aptitude. Katana is a Weapon Focus, of course.

It was actually really hard finding any examples of a Flesh-Form insect spirit, since I don't really think there is art of any? True Form and Pure Forms are pretty easy because they're just giant bugs and bugs wearing a victim as a skin-suit, but I couldn't find any art examples of Flesh-Form spirits so I ended up giving the artist references from like... Resident Evil and The Fly.

Anyhow, I think the artist did an amazing job with this and I wanted to share it.

Artist is Gali_XV on twitter (I'd post a link but I'm not sure if this subreddit banned twitter links like the D&D subreddits did), I highly recommend him.

5e Looking to have fun talking.

Hello, my apologies if I am bothering anyone. Just kind of got back into thinking up shadowrun stuff and was wondering if anyone had or would be willing to just talk/theorize up some possible fun build ideas.

Not really thinking anything optimal or such just hoping to have fun with what I believe would be some of the more less used metatypes/metavariants.

Big interest in hearing about Centaurs.... just sounds really fun.

Custom Tech If you made a new system to run shadowrun, what mechanics would you HAVE to include?

So after years of loving Shadowrun as a setting and it's various videogames, and trying to learn and grasp various different edition and figuring out how to introduce them to my players: I've given up and plan to just frankenstein something together out of BORG-like/OSR/CWN parts.

But I kinda wanted to know what mechanics or concepts you guys feel are Central to Shadowrun.

For me, the main one is the whole Essence: cyberware vs magic spectrum. More cyberware means lower magical ability, "bettering" your flesh with the certainity of steel by losing your connection to spirits and magic isn't just a cool mechanic, you can base whole characters around it ala glory.

I've looked into narrative based versions like runner in the shadows but I kinda feel like a high tech scifi setting should have more of a nitty gritty crunchy system where you track what attachments you have to weapons and how many grenades your brought etc etc

If you could entrust any game studio to create a Shadowrun game in an open-world setting, something fully realized in either third and/or first-person, which would it be?

You wouldn't be limited to just humans; as elves, dwarves, orks, and trolls would also be playable! The game would be set in the Seattle Metroplex
