[Guide] How to Use Custom Controllers on Rock Band 4 for Xbox (CRKD Neo S / Polybar)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi everyone! I finally figured out a setup that lets me use some of the cool new music game controllers on Xbox! I've tested this on both Rock Band 4 and Fortnite Festival, and it works pretty well. I imagine it'll also work with Stage Tour, since it supports RB4 instruments.
Requirements
- Roll Limitless adapter
- Brook Wingman XB (mine is first generation, but I imagine newer versions should work as well)
- A Nintendo Switch-compatible controller (most of these newer controllers support Switch)
General Guide
What we're basically doing here is tricking Rock Band into thinking our controller is a guitar, and then tricking Xbox into thinking our Switch-compatible controller is an Xbox controller. Maybe newer generations of the Wingman also work with generic PC Bluetooth controllers, but at least on mine, Switch mode was the only one that worked.
1. Install the correct Roll Limitless firmware: You can find the firmware here. The process is pretty straightforward, and there's also a guide available on the website.
Which firmware you need depends on how you plan to play:
- Rock Band Guitar: If you're using a controller with strumming.
- Guitar on Controller: If you're playing with regular buttons (pad). Both Guitar Hero and Fortnite Festival layouts are supported, so choose whichever you prefer.
There's the Multiple Firmwares option as well, which lets you switch in real time. I recommend just installing whichever firmware you're going to use and reapplying it on PC when needed. I had quite a few accidental button presses that switched the firmware mid-game.
2. Configure your controller bindings: This is probably the part that requires the most work, depending on your controller. If you're using it as a guitar, Rock Band expects the following inputs:
- A = Green
- B = Red
- X = Blue
- Y = Yellow
- RB = Orange
- Right Analog Stick (Y-axis) = Whammy
- Select / Back = Star Power
- D-pad Up / Down = Strumming
If you're using it as a pad, you can follow either of these layouts:
- Guitar Hero: LT / LB / RB / RT / A
- Fortnite Festival: Left / Right / X / Y / B
If your controller already matches one of these layouts, great! You can skip the remapping. If you're only planning to play Fortnite Festival, that's also great, since you can rebind your controls directly in-game. Otherwise, you'll need to use your controller's proprietary configuration tool to change the bindings on the device itself.
Also, keep in mind that some Switch presets invert the face buttons (especially X and Y), so you might need to account for that when configuring everything.
3. Connect the Roll Limitless to your Xbox.
4. Plug the Brook Wingman into the Roll Limitless USB port.
5. Pair your controller with the Wingman: Some controllers work with Switch wireless pairing. If not, use it wired.
6. Calibrate your game and enjoy! :)
That's pretty much it for the general setup! Below are some more specific instructions for the two controllers I've tested.
Polybar Micro
This one requires some configuration on PC before it'll work properly.
1. Download Santroller Configurator v1
I recommend using this instead of the standard Three Pieces Configurator, since the latter doesn't have all the features we need. I also couldn't get mine to pair with Santroller v2, so I'm basing myself on v1 only.
2. Back up your current configuration: I recommend exporting your existing settings to a file, just in case you want to restore them later.
3. Configure your bindings: If you own a PolybarMicro-USK, you can simply import my configuration here
Otherwise, here's what you'll need to change:
a) Controller Settings
- Device to Emulate → Gamepad
- Swap Switch Face Buttons → Enabled
b) Remove unused buttons: For mine, I kept only:
- A / B / X / Y
- D-pad Up / Down
- Start / Back
- Right Joystick Y-axis
c) Check the X/Y button mapping: You might need to swap X and Y manually. An easy way to check is to see if pressing X lights up the yellow fret instead of blue (and vice versa). If that happens, copy paste each values to make the switch.
4. Save your changes
PS: I was only able to get the Polybar Micro working through a wired connection. Wireless pairing didn't work for me.
CRKD Neo S (with 5 frets)
This one is a bit more interesting, since both pad and guitar gameplay make sense on it.
1. Configuring the bindings: You can use the official CRKD app to remap the controller. It works for the most part, but keep in mind that some bindings can randomly fail to save on the controller. If a button isn't behaving as expected, try applying the configuration again. I had to do this a few times before everything worked correctly.
2. Playing in pad mode: I recommend using the Fortnite Festival layout on Roll Limitless, as the Expert preset already covers the buttons you need. The classic Guitar Hero layout also works, but you'll need to create a custom binding for the frets.
3. Playing in guitar mode: Create a custom bindings so that the frets match A/B/Y/X/RB. For strumming, I like mapping Right to D-pad Up and Left to D-pad Down so that I can play on any orientation. You can assign the back buttons to select for the star power or the bumpers.
And that's it! Hopefully this helps anyone who wants to use these newer controllers on Xbox without having to rely on the original Rock Band instruments.
