Travel Buddy/ies over Thanksgiving 2026

Hi community. I have booked flights over Thanksgiving to San Juan (Thursday-Sunday), anybody else there at the time? I would like to see some parts of the Island, maybe visit Vieques. I am 36, f., easy to get along and flexible regarding specific plans. Currently looking to rent a car, since getting around seems difficult otherwise.

Is bioluminescence visible in Vieques?

I’ve booked a biobay tour with AliKei Adventures for Nov 1. They haven’t cancelled the tour or provided any updates, but I read on this sub that the bioluminescence in Vieques wasn’t visible last week?!

We’ve planned to spend a day in Vieques, but if the biobay isn’t glowing, we’d rather explore other places on the main island instead.

Does anyone have any idea what the bioluminescence might be like on Nov 1? Is it completely unpredictable?

Thank you.

Cape Air from SJU to Vieques

My husband and I are flying Cape Air from SJU to Vieques in early December, and I'd love to hear from anyone who has made this trip recently. How reliable is it? How early to get to each airport?

Do I REALLY need a 4WD in Vieques?

Going to San Juan the end of March, with a 3 day trip over to Vieques later in the week. I've read so many conflicting stories of whether I need a 4WD in Vieques, or if a Kia Soul will do the job?

The Jeep is $480, at most places, the Kia Soul is $310 (at Maritza's). The Kia Soul is my plan, unless you say I REALLY need a Jeep/Bronco?

Seeking driver: Utuado & Old San Juan

Hi! I’m interested in doing a mountain retreat in Caonillas Abajo in Utuado. I heard the roads are quite windy and narrow; therefore, I don’t feel comfortable driving. Any suggestions for a driver who can drive us (3 total) to Utuado from SJU on a Monday at the end of December, and then pick us up to drop us back off to Old San Juan two days later? I know this a long shot, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask. TIA!

Water & Electric issues?

Has anyone visited recently that can shed some light on whether the water and electric issues are actually as widespread as the news is saying? I have a trip booked for January but I’m wondering if I should cancel.

We were planning to stay at a resort or hotel, but I’d rather reschedule for a time that the country is in better shape if I need to.

Hi, Delta just changed the departure time for my flight on Saturday Jan 30th. Coming in on Tradewinds Aviation from EIS (BVI) . Is 2 hours enough time to collect bags, go through US customs and immigration (US citizen), check bags with Delta, go through TSA Pre ✔️security and make the flight ?

Thanks in advance

4.5 days in PR in late December: is Culebra worth it? Itinerary feedback + restaurant recs please!

Hi all! My husband and I are heading to Puerto Rico in late December. We land in San Juan around noon on day 1 and fly home on the afternoon of day 5. We love being in the water, so we want lots of snorkeling, beach time and a few adventure activities. Here's the plan so far:

Day 1: land, beach (Isla Verde or Condado), jet ski, piña colada, short walk through Old San Juan at sunset

Day 2: El Yunque natural waterslide and rope swing in the morning, then drive to Ceiba and take the ferry to Culebra (1 night, staying in Dewey)

Day 3: scuba and snorkeling on Culebra (Melones, Tamarindo, Flamenco), ferry back to Ceiba, drive to San Juan

Day 4: zipline at Toro Verde (The Monster)

Day 5: Old San Juan in the morning, then the airport

Questions:

  1. Is Culebra worth one night on a trip this short, or would we be better off staying on the main island and doing a snorkel boat trip (Icacos, etc.) instead?

  2. The December ferry tickets don't seem to be released yet. Any tips for getting tickets around Christmas? Has anyone had trouble with sold-out ferries that week?

  3. Best snorkeling spots near San Juan or Fajardo if we skip Culebra? Any tour operators you'd recommend?

  4. Anything in this plan that looks too packed or like a mistake?

Restaurants: we'd love your favorite spots in Old San Juan, Condado, Santurce/La Placita, Luquillo and Culebra. We don't eat pork or beef, so lechón is out for us, but chicken, shrimp and prawns are great. I also eat fish, but my husband doesn't. Local, casual places and a nice sit-down dinner or two are both welcome. Great piña coladas too!

Thanks so much!

Has anyone recently taken the Ceiba–Culebra ferry with an infant or toddler?

We’re traveling November 5–6 with our 1-year-old daughter, and I’ve already purchased our adult ferry tickets.

I saw on the ferry website that children ages 0–3 ride free, but their tickets must be obtained at the terminal.

My questions are:

If the ferry sells out, is my daughter still guaranteed a spot since we already have adult tickets?

Does she actually need a photo ID, or will her birth certificate and a parent’s ID be sufficient?

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s traveled with a baby recently! Thank you! 😊

Culebra crib rentals

Hi everyone! 😊 We’re visiting Culebra in early November with our 1-year-old daughter and will be staying for one night.
Does anyone know of a local company or individual who rents pack ’n plays or portable cribs on the island? Ideally, we’d love to arrange delivery to our accommodation, but we’re open to picking it up.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Upcoming Trip

Hi. We're scheduled to visit the island & want to stay in Aguadilla, Isabella or Rincon from December 29 - January 03 & Rio Grande from January 03 - January 09. Is the water shortage/rationing truly over & back to normal? Also, out of Aguadilla, Isabella and Rincon which is the best for sightseeing and nightlife in the evening cause we're not really beach people? Thanks 😀

Short trip - Vieques or no?

I’m going to PR in early December for 5 days including travel (arriving around 1pm Friday, leaving around 6pm Tuesday). Would it be too ambitious to go to Vieques for a night for the bioluminescent bay and horseback riding? I’m worried about wasting time with the commute to the island and weather causing potential issues for the plane/ferry, but my partner really wants to do those two things.

Do you think Vieques is worth the extra hassle for commute/accommodation? Aside from those two activities we’re looking forward to seeing the rainforest, spending time in old San Juan, and relaxing on the beach.

late arrival

I fly in around 2 AM, and will be spending my time in San Juan. If I was solo I would just tough it out in the airport for a few hours but I have friends who dont travel much with me. Are there any hostels with 24 hour reception that would at the very least allow us to drop bags off and we can walk to beach for a few hours or even a hostel that would let us check in at that time for a private room so as not to disturb other guests? I really dont want to pay for a hotel that night for just a few hours and I work night shift so I'm used to staying awake at that time.

Recommendations for Exploring Puerto Rico as a Family?

Hi everyone!
My family and I are interested in exploring Puerto Rico, and we’d love some recommendations!

We enjoy exploring as much as possible rather than spending the entire trip at a resort. We’d love to experience the island’s natural beauty, beaches, culture, food, and some adventurous activities.

We’re considering renting a van so we can drive around and explore different parts of the island. We’re also interested in renting a private boat for a few hours to experience the coastline or nearby islands.

A few things we’d love advice on:
Where to stay: Would you recommend staying in San Juan and exploring from there, or splitting time between different parts of the island? Safety and convenience are important to us.

Must-visit places: What are some of the most beautiful or unique spots around Puerto Rico? We’re open to driving longer distances for worthwhile experiences.

Activities: Any recommendations for boat charters, scenic hikes, waterfalls, hidden beaches, or other memorable experiences?

Safety: Are there any areas or activities we should avoid, particularly when exploring as a family with a rental van?

Local experiences: We’d love recommendations for authentic restaurants, smaller towns, scenic drives, and places that might not be on the typical tourist itinerary.
We enjoy fairly packed itineraries and are open to staying in multiple locations if that makes exploring easier.

Any suggestions, including things you wish you’d known before exploring Puerto Rico, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
