U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Why is Gen Z so conservative about sex/nudity when they’re so progressive about most other things?

1.3k Upvotes

As a 90’s kid who grew up at the tail end of the sexual liberation movement, it seems like a total reversal to see younger generations frankly acting like 1950’s conservatives when it comes to sex. It seems like they’ve succumbed to the same fear tactics that conservatives of the past used, yet they don’t fall for those tactics when it comes to so many other conservative goals/talking points.

I guess I’m just curious as to why sex specifically became the one thing that Gen Z tends to clutch their pearls over

Why did society stop building "third places" where adults can hang out without spending money, and why is lingering in public now treated with suspicion?

1.0k Upvotes

Historically, communities had numerous free or low-cost physical spaces where people could naturally gather, socialize, or simply spend time outside of work and home — like community recreation halls, town squares, bowling leagues, and public gathering pavilions.

Today, almost every space meant for adults requires continuous purchasing (cafés, bars, entertainment venues), and simply sitting or spending an afternoon in a commercial area without actively consuming leads to being asked to leave or viewed as loitering.

From an urban planning and sociological perspective, did this shift happen purely because commercial real estate prioritized monetization, or did our collective tolerance for unstructured public interaction fundamentally decline?

Pentagon requires all major U.S. Military bases to be self sufficient for the next 90 days. No outside fuel, electricity, food, water or supplies. Manufactured chaos or is something else happening?

How do you encourage someone to accept their loss of status without devastating them?

1.1k Upvotes

My half brother took the ultimate L in an irrevocable fashion, a second conviction for CSAM possession. He had been a fairly successful professional but now can't get a job and lives with my parents. He's been trying to date women and I'm want to tell him that's just not going to happen. (For one thing, he isn't attracted to them, he just wants companionship, but companionship requires honesty and he's in at least partial denial about what/who he is.)

His personality has not changed AT ALL after prison, which is challenging for me. Like how do you politely remind somebody that they are disgraced?

I heard there is therapy specifically for loss of status; does anyone know anything about this? It might just come to me cutting ties with him. This is sortof a last resort after several years tolerating him and being condescended to.

Edit: Got a good consensus overall. Thank you. A spate of ignorant comments means no more replies from me. From the police standpoint there is nothing more to be done. DMs open to people with experience facing this… kind of thing. Thanks again

If someone is willing to lie in court, why would making them swear an oath suddenly make them tell the truth?

Is there a sub culture of lesbians that makes mask wearing part of their identity?

To clarify, no judgement or hate at all. Very pro LGBTQ and was very pro masking a few years ago. I have just noticed that there seems to be a lot of gay women who continue the practice and was curious if anyone else has noticed this and if there is a reason behind it.

Why do call centers have an AI answering service, take all the information to transfer you to a live person, just for the person to ask you the same questions?

I often have to call the local Social Security office for clients and after i get through the stupid prompts, they ask for the clients’ SSN. Then, when i get to the person, they ask for the client’s info again. Wouldn’t it make more sense if you just skipped straight to the live person??

And also, Not to sound like a boomer but the worst advancement in technology was the addition of AI answering services. I don’t want to speak to an AI voice, i want to get straight to speaking to a live person. And you never can just skip right to speak to a person, you have to go through the scripts AND THEN wait for someone to pick up.

Is software engineering still a viable career path despite AI?

I've been thinking of trying to learn software engineering from scratch. I heard like maybe 10 years ago this was arguably among the safest and best career choices because of high demand and decent salary. But with the advent of AI and hearing many stories about how those jobs get over thousands of applicants, is this still a good career choice?

I know some people say passion first but still. It would honestly suck if you love doing this yet can't find a job. Is the future of software engineering (and fields related to it) still good, despite AI getting smarter and smarter every year?

Why do most people not consider chronic pain to be one of the worst things that can happen to you?

When people mention their greatest fears or worst-case scenarios I’m surprised that endless agony rarely comes up. And in fact many of these same people dismiss chronic pain sufferers.

Driver refused to give other driver their name and insurance info after a fender bender in a parking lot.

Location: California

I witnessed a car hit another car as they were both trying to exit a parking lot. It wasn't a hard hit by any means, just your typical fender-bender and I didn't notice any damage on either car.

Both drivers got out their cars to check out the damage. The driver who hit the other car refused to give the other driver their name or insurance information. They stood there arguing for a while but the guy who hit the car refused to give up their info. The driver of the car that was hit eventually left out of frustration, and the other driver drove away after that.

That incident got me thinking about how to handle that should I ever find myself in a similar situation.

So my question is this, if you're in an accident and the other driver refuses to give you any info regarding insurance and whatnot, what are the legal ramifications for someone that does that? Normally you don't call the police for a fender bender but would that be the next step?

If you’re a doctor and you meet a patient you generally vibe with what are the rules about becoming real life friends?

For context, I am the patient in this scenario and I genuinely feel like my OB and I would be friends IRL. She’s like the big sister I never had, and we got to be pretty chummy while I was pregnant. I know she mentioned to one of her partners that I was a “special patient.” But now it makes me sad that I can’t actually be friends with her and I only get to see her once a year. I also am not a super outgoing and friendly gal, I tend to only have a very small circle. So I guess my question is could we ever be friends someday? Lol.

How do you comfort someone who just lost a child to cancer?

A friend of my family just lost their 6 year old to cancer. I have known the child’s father for as long as I can remember. I am not able to get the time off work to go to the funeral, how do I best support them right now? They have 3 other children including the twin of the child that passed.

I know what it is like to be someone who loves someone with cancer, my husband had cancer for 6 years. We were very fortunate, he is now in remission.

I know I can’t fully understand their loss because it has never happened to me. I am completely at a loss right now and I feel so terrible for them because their reality was my worst nightmare for a long time and they will never get to feel the relief that I did when we found out that my husband was in remission.

What do people mean by “learn AI?”

Lately, I constantly see people saying that if you don’t “learn AI” you won’t be able to find a job, or keep up, or whatever. What does that even mean, bc honestly it sounds like nonsense to me. Like, learn how to enter a prompt into chatGPT? Learn how to develop an entirely new AI system? What is there to learn, really, that’s going to save all the jobs that AI is killing?

what is the intent of mr blobby?

• Upvotes

this one's for the british people. i'm from spain originally, but lived in england for a few years during university. while i was living there, i worked somewhere with a lot of down time, and my colleagues spent a lot of that free time teaching me about british culture. we went through everything, good and bad, from postman pat to jimmy seville to the lurgy. however, there is one thing they showed me that i never quite understood. mr blobby.

i am fascinated by mr blobby. everything about him is so deeply strange, and i commend the british for coming up with him. the colour combination is atrocius and makes it look like he has some sort of contagious skin condition, the costume is surprisingly low budget/poorly made, and the more you look at his face the more terrifying it gets, not to talk about the nightmare-inducing voice. simply horrible. love it.

what i don't get is what his audience is supposed to be, or how we as an audience are supposed to react to him. is he supposed to be a wholesome children's character? do children actually like him, or are they scared of him? is it a so bad it's good situation that everyone is in on? is it supposed to be some sort of parody of children's mascots?
