Cyclist looking for a ride to Diama

• Upvotes

Good evening!

I'm currently cycling in Mauritania going south and will be in Nouakchott the 30th. My plan was to cross the border at Diama but weather forecast is showing a lot of rain the days before and after my planned crossing, so it's not really possible by bicycle and I really want to avoid Rosso + I wanted to see the park.

Are there any 4x4 or trucks that feel like taking me and my bicycle for the unpaved part? Or even a bit before that. Whatever works timing wise.

I have a fixed plane ticket back so waiting it out is a bit risky. It would also be a cool experience :) I'll buy you some beers in St. Louis!!

Thanks!

how to get to azoueiga

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for advice on the best way to get from Nouakchott to Azoueiga in Mauritania.

What would be the easiest and most reliable option? Is it possible to travel by public transport, shared taxi, or would I need to hire a private driver or 4x4 ? is it worth visiting?

thank you

Hello everyone! :)

I'll be visiting Nouadhibou, Mauritania around 19th-22nd November, 2026.

As a solo traveler would love to connect with locals to hang out, show around more local side and culture of the country, etc.

Or any other travelers that are also around this time.

Any connections would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to message me. :)

Overland to Mauritania via PK55/Guerguerat on North Macedonian passport with eVisa pending/rejected – Advice needed on options & on-site VoA

Hi everyone,

I need some urgent advice from anyone who has recently crossed the PK55 / Guerguerat land border into Mauritania, especially non-EU/US/Canada passport holders or solo overland travelers.

Here is my full situation:

My Profile & Itinerary:

-Passport: North Macedonia (Non-EU / non-waiver nationality for Mauritanian eVisas).

-Other Documents: Valid Bulgarian EU Residence Permit (Residence Card).

-Moroccan Visa: Double-Entry Moroccan Transit Visa (5 days per entry).

-Current Location & Timeline: Currently in Madrid, flying to Dakhla today (Oct 27). Planning to cross the land border at PK55 on October 28, returning to Dakhla for my booked flight back to Europe on November 5 (PNR confirmed).

The Problem:

I have submitted 9 attempts on the official ANRPTS Mauritanian eVisa portal. Applications keep getting rejected or stuck in an automated filter because my passport nationality requires a formal Business Letter of Invitation (LOI) or direct host authorization on the system, which standard tourist applications do not provide.

I have booked accommodation in Nouakchott, and I am in contact via WhatsApp with a hotel manager who offers eVisa assistance, but I don't have an approved QR code/eVisa clearance in hand yet.

My Questions for the Community:

1.On-Site Visa on Arrival (VoA) at PK55: Has anyone with a non-EU/US passport recently obtained a biometric Visa-on-Arrival directly at the PK55 border post without prior online approval?

-Do border officers have full discretion to enroll and issue the €55/€60 visa sticker on the spot if I show hard copies of my hotel booking, return flight, Bulgarian residence card, and cash?

2.Invitation Letters / Tour Operator Fixes: Are there any recommended local Nouakchott/Atar travel agencies or registered tour guides who can rapidly issue an official visa support letter / LOI for overland travelers on short notice?

3.Worst-Case Scenario at PK55: If Mauritanian border control turns me away because my online status is still Under Review, is turning back through the buffer zone to use the 2nd entry on my Moroccan transit visa straightforward? Anything specific to watch out for with Moroccan border police on the return?

4.Alternative Workarounds: Is there any other workaround or embassy contact (e.g., in Morocco or online) that I should know about?

Any recent first-hand experiences, contacts, or advice for crossing PK55 under these conditions would be hugely appreciated!

Thank you so much!

Looking for people to ride the Iron Ore train with 🚂

Hello everyone!

My name is Ali, from France and Turkey. I’m a solo traveller planning to go to Mauritania at the beginning of November for one week.

I’ll be arriving in Dakhla, then crossing the border to Nouadhibou and Nouakchott, going through Atar and Choum before returning to Dakhla. 🚂

I’m travelling on a budget and would love to meet some people along the way. If anyone is planning something similar around those dates, don’t hesitate to comment or DM me!

What’s wrong with us

In your opinion fellow Mauritanians , what is wrong with us ? Is it the tribalism , racism, misogyny, inferiority complex, entitlement or arrogance? I just can’t tell genuinely if we doomed ourselves or that we were never meant to make it out in the first place?

Iron ore train in February

Hi, I’m a 23 year old guy from Turkey planning to visit Mauritania from January 30 to February 6 for the Iron Ore Train.

I already booked my round trip flights to Dakhla. I’m planning to cross the border into Mauritania, take the train and return to Dakhla before my flight.

Is 7 days enough for this? Where is the best place to get on and off the train? Also, how difficult is it to travel between Dakhla and Nouadhibou, and is it safe to do this trip solo?

Any advice from people who have done it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Traveling to Mauritania with two dogs – any advice on wildlife dangers (snakes, scorpions, etc.) and overall experience?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Mauritania with my two dogs and I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences.

My biggest concern is wildlife – especially snakes, scorpions, and any other animals that could be dangerous for dogs (or for us). Are there particular areas or seasons where the risk is higher? Any practical tips on how to keep the dogs safe (nighttime precautions, checking shoes/bags, etc.)?

I’m also curious about the overall experience of traveling with dogs in Mauritania:

  • How dog-friendly is the country in general?
  • Any issues with hotels, transport, or border crossings?
  • Things that surprised you (positively or negatively)?

Has anyone here actually done a trip to Mauritania with dogs? I’d love to hear your stories, what went well, and what you’d do differently.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Chinguetti beyond the dunes: practical tips for the libraries, transport and an overnight stop

Following up on my Terjit post: I continued through Atar to Chinguetti. The old stone streets and manuscript library were worth the stop, but the kitchen conversations, shared meal and walk out to the dunes are what I remember most.

A few practical notes if you're planning the same route:

  1. Sort out the journey back, not just the ride there. Ask about the actual departure point, seats, price and return options in Atar. Confirm locally rather than building the day around an assumed timetable.
  2. Give the library visit some time. We went inside one and sat with the person showing us the manuscripts. Ask your host who is available that day, agree on any visit fee beforehand, and ask before taking photos or touching anything. It's worth having a conversation, not just taking a book photo and leaving.
  3. I'd leave room for an overnight stop. The old town, a library visit and the dunes are different experiences. Trying to squeeze all three between two transfers would feel rushed to me. Check accommodation and tell your host when you expect to arrive.
  4. Carry cash, small notes and drinking water. Save your accommodation location and onward contacts offline too. I wouldn't make food, transport or check-in plans that depend on having a good connection when you arrive.
  5. Leave the dunes for the softer evening light, but plan the way back. Take water, keep track of your route and ask before photographing people. It is also someone's everyday neighbourhood, not an empty film set.
  6. Keep a buffer before the train. Later on this trip we missed it in Choum and changed plans, continuing to Zouerat. I wouldn't promise myself Chinguetti plus a perfectly timed train connection in one tight day.

These are notes from my own visit, not a current price list or timetable. If you're local or have been recently, what would you add or correct for someone visiting Chinguetti for the first time?

I filmed this visit too. This is my own Chinguetti video, showing the old town, the manuscript library and the dunes if you'd like to see what the stop looks like:

[Travel Buddies] Dakhla & Mauritania (Iron Ore Train 🚂🇲🇷) – Mid/Late November (7-10 days)

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a budget/backpacker trip to Dakhla and Mauritania in about a month (mid to late November) and looking for easygoing travel buddies to join the adventure or share logistics.

About me:
Im 20, easygoing guy, speak fluent Spanish & English, looking for a chill, low-budget, high-adventure vibe. I'm taking basic gear (hammock, local blankets, goggles, headlamp).

You don't have to do the entire route together if you're already in West Africa, but it’d be awesome to team up for the border crossing, the train ride, or sharing 4x4 costs.

Drop a comment or send me a DM if you're around or interested! 🎒✨
