I was doing some chill Outpost runs as usual, running armories and red room in Pinwheel. Hit one armory during the run already - was doing good, had a circuit breaker already.
I hit Pinwheel pretty late as was fumbling about with destroyed wing buttons, and decided to use the conveyor request instead.
By the time I hit red room, it was already ~1 minute, and I wasn't expecting much from it.
But I was so wrong.
Lo and behold, I got a gold shield from one of the strongboxes. I've never seen one in my 40 hours of Marathon, the most being a purple shield. So I booked it out of Pinwheel.
I didn't know where the exit drop in drone wing was, so I took the conveyor lift. Wasted precious seconds waiting for the lift to drop. I obviously grappled the moment I could squeeze out.
Exit was ~140m way, and I had around 50 seconds on the clock. Exfil was around flight control.
I ran and ran, and in my panic or perhpas there truly was no available routes for me, I ran through the main corridor of flight control.
Just my luck, there was a bum-fuck group of UESC loiterers hanging around, destined to keep me from my escape. I tried avoiding combat with them, but one of the bots was blocking the doorway like an oversized metal gantry, so I had to reroute by breaking a glass window. That cost me more precious few seconds.
My grapple went off cooldown, and the exfil was so close to me. I pressed my button and hoped for the best.
I was too late. I was off by 3-5 seconds. I saw countdown finish, and I was stuck on that accursed map, with no exfil cutscene in sight.
I lost the gold shield. It hurt much more knowing that gold shields are especially rare during this season, and that was the first one I saw in all my hours of Marathon gameplay. Lost the purple Bully SMG and blue Longshot I had with me too as well, alongside all the loot.
Marthon giveth, and it taketh.
