Business/Finance Stranded in Tokyo at 10 PM with my family: MakeMyTrip cancelled my hotel a month prior, emailed me a “Confirmed” voucher 7 days before, and left us on the street.
I don’t usually take to social media to vent, but what MakeMyTrip put my family through in Tokyo on October 25th was beyond unacceptable—it was downright reckless and dangerous.
If you rely on MakeMyTrip for international trips, think twice before trusting them with your family’s accommodation.
What Happened:
Prompt Compliance: Booked a hotel in Tokyo more than a month before via MakeMyTrip. Shortly after, MMT sent an email stating they required specific details and warned that failing to provide them could lead to the hotel cancelling the reservation. I complied and submitted everything requested on the very same day.
Despite submitting the requested details immediately, I received another email asking for the exact same information. Since I had already furnished the details, I kept my confirmation copies handy.
Just one week before check-in, MMT sent an automated booking confirmation email explicitly stating that my hotel reservation was confirmed and around the corner. We boarded our flights to Japan completely confident that our stay was secured.
The Shock at 22:00 hrs in Tokyo (25th October): After driving over 750 km that day, my wife, our 12-year-old son, and I reached the hotel lobby dead tired at 10:00 PM, expecting to check in and rest. The front desk searched their system and informed us that the reservation had been cancelled way back on 18th September—over five weeks earlier.
The Reality of Their "Support":
For more than a month, MMT had dropped the ball on this booking.
Even worse: on October 18th, a full month after the hotel dropped the reservation, MMT’s system blasted out a fresh confirmation assuring me the stay was confirmed.
When I called MMT in a state of sheer panic from Tokyo, their customer service casually offered: "Sir, we have processed your refund."
A basic refund does not secure a hotel room at 10 PM in Tokyo. Walk-in rates in central Tokyo are exorbitant, and many hotels are completely sold out late at night.
Wandering around the streets late at night in a foreign country trying to find emergency lodging for an exhausted family after an entire day of driving was agonizing. We had to shell out a massive last-minute fee out of our own pocket just to get a roof over our heads.
What options do I have? I am super angry and I feel so small against these giant corporates.
