A patient tests the "Headshrinker" positron emitter detector used to locate brain tumors at Brookhaven National Laboratory, circa 1962 [736x925]
Developed by scientist James S. Robertson, this multidetector positron scanner was a direct forerunner to modern Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanning technology. It utilized radioactivity-labeled substances that concentrated in brain tumors to map their locations.

Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, then 22, on trial before the military dictatorship. Rio de Janeiro, 1970. [2045 x 1534]
The arrest: Dilma, then a militant against the military dictatorship, was arrested on January 16, 1970, at a bar on Rua Augusta in downtown São Paulo, a spot used for clandestine meetings between militants..
The 22 days of torture: In a statement given in May 1970, she reported having been tortured for 22 consecutive days, between January and February, at the headquarters of OBAN (Operação Bandeirante), with electric shocks, the pau de arara (“parrot’s perch”) and moral and psychological abuse. In a 2003 interview, she described beatings with a palmatória (paddle), the parrot’s perch and repeated electric shocks, to the point that she began to hemorrhage. The torture was not confined to São Paulo: notes addressed to “Estela”, one of her code names, intercepted by military agents, reportedly led to new torture sessions in Minas Gerais. Even after being transferred, she reported before the military court that members of the OBAN team had come to the prison to threaten her with further abuse.
Imprisonment: After the interrogations, she was taken to the Tiradentes Prison, to the women’s wing known as the “Torre das Donzelas” (Tower of Maidens). As for her sentences, she was sentenced to one year in the Minas Gerais military police inquiry, for belonging to an armed organization, and to one year and one month in the Rio de Janeiro case. The photo dates from this period: her trial at a military court in Rio de Janeiro in 1970, after more than 20 days of torture. In total, she spent almost three years in prison and was released at the end of 1972.

19-year-old Greta Garbo, director Mauritz Stiller, and actor Einar Hanson in front of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, 1924. Photo by Julius Jaenzon [876 x 648]
In December 1924, a 19-year-old Greta Garbo traveled to Istanbul alongside renowned Swedish director Mauritz Stiller and co-star Einar Hanson to film The Odalisque from Smolna. Cinematographer Julius Jaenzon, who took this photo, was also part of the crew.
Traveling via the Orient Express, the group stayed at the historic Pera Palace Hotel for nearly 50 days. During their time in the city, they explored the historical peninsula, visited Hagia Sophia, and attended holiday receptions at the Swedish Embassy.
However, due to funding failures and production disputes, the film collapsed and was never completed. Shortly after leaving Istanbul, Garbo caught the attention of MGM's Louis B. Mayer, heading to Hollywood to become an icon. Today, her room at the Pera Palace is preserved as the "Greta Garbo Corner Room
