Moving/Housing/Utilities Weekly Moving To Hamilton Megathread

Welcome to the weekly moving to/within Hamilton post. All questions about moving, utilities and neighbourhood recommendations belong in here.

If you are looking for recommendations/have questions about neighbourhoods, relators, landlords or utilities including internet etc, this is the place to ask!

If you are looking for recommendations on which area of the city would suit you, be sure to include some information about you and your family. What works for a single person starting out may not be recommended for a family with young children etc. Someone commuting by car will want to be closer to highways while those relying on transit will want to be on regular transit routes.

Utilities

Alectra for water bills https://alectrautilities.com/hamilton-water

Alectra for hydro (electricity) in much of the city https://alectrautilities.com/

Hydro One for electricity in other areas of the city https://www.hydroone.com/

Enbridge provides gas to most of the city but you can sign up with many energy companies at various rates https://www.enbridgegas.com/

Ask your landlord or realtor for the providers for your new address

Discussion Hamilton Animal Services - ADOPTABLE DOGS

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Our municipal shelter Hamilton Animal Services (247 Dartnall Road, Hamilton ON) is AT CAPACITY, and they need help getting some of these amazing animals out into foster or committed adoptive homes asap. Whilst Petfinder only shows a handful of dogs listed, these are the ones currently assessed and ready to go for adoption.

There are plenty of other dogs behind the scenes marked for rescue pull only or are awaiting their stray holds coming off. The ones pictured are the ones we could use the public’s help to home now.

Please have a look at the animals on Hamilton Animal Services website and tell your friends that are readily looking for a dog.

Jet - young male dog 1-2yo American bully. Super snuggly after he becomes your friend although shy initially. Medium energy. Neutral around other dogs and would benefit from someone with dog experience.

Balto - 10-12mo Siberian Husky puppy. Seeking active home (high energy). Good with dogs, good with kids. Not cat tested but likely good with slow intros. Needs training as he’s in the puppy phase and learning leash skills. Very sweet. Detached home recommended for this vocal breed.

Mallard / Hopper - both are approx 1-2 yo Ridgeback / Hound Mixes. Both are incredibly sweet and super loaded with energy being stuck in the kennels. Neither have had interest for adoptions and are in need of foster homes or active adopters. Both are high energy dogs that need runs each day (not just walks) and obedience work. Hopper might do well in a kid home. Mallard is nervous around kids and wants an adult only home or dog-savy teens. Recommended to have detached homes for these bouncy boys.

Maisie - 7yo American Bulldog. Seeking detached home (not an apartment dog). Leash reactive and doesn’t enjoy being around other dogs. Wants to be a solo pet. Not kid tested but likely teenagers would be her preference.

Tony - 3yo Jack Russell Terrier - medium energy small dog that loves to make new human friends and play. He is not kid or cat tested. He’s dog selective so will need to find a well matched friend.

Meet and greets can be arranged for those interested in the animals. Make sure you are prepared for the responsibility that comes with dog ownership. These dogs are loved and ready for their second chance.

Request Does anyone have a bunch of newspaper they don't need? ISO your newspaper for a papier mache project!

Hello Hamilton

I will come pick up your unwanted newspaper in Hamilton Ontario

So I had this last minute idea for a Halloween costume that would require me to make a giant head out of papier-mache. Unfortunately I have close to ZERO newspaper and I would love to take some off your hands if you have a bunch that you have no use for. I want to make this by Friday night.

Ideally you are in the lower city, specifically in Ward 3 but Wards 2 and 4 are a-ok

Municipal Election 2026 Terry Whitehead continues to be a poor loser

From his website. Love the cheap shot on "56% that didn't vote for Dawn" when if we look at it, Terry had 75.96% of the voters who did not vote for Terry. A douche once and always.

Discussion So how long did it take you to get home tonight?

Highway is closed, and every alternate route is jammed.

It took me about 2 and a half hours to get to Hamilton from Dixie and Dundas in Mississauga.

How did everyone else do?

Discussion 31.59% voter turnout

I feel sad when I see this number. We have to do better. So many people complain about stuff not working, but do not get out to vote on a Saturday or a Sunday. Provincial voter turnout is better than municipal. Why can’t we take more interest locally that also affects our day to day.

Recommendations Needed Passport photos for baby

• Upvotes

Hello - hoping to travel with our babe once he’s fully vaxxed and ready to party. Has anyone gotten passport photos done for a baby in Hamilton and had a good (and preferably affordable) experience?

He’s currently only 6 weeks, but we want to get the ball rolling because who knows when we’ll actually get around to getting this done; newborn life IYKYK.

Municipal Election 2026 The 2 questionable 3rd party advertisers had blowback on their "concerned taxpayers of Hamilton" and "Dankos Rain tax" aattacks

Post image

The Concerned Taxpayers and Dankos Rain Tax have essentially the same messages posted. They have had to step back from their dirty tricks due to "personal attacks" that are "coordinated" and whatever. Meanwhile, 0 accountability for why they might receive blowback on their attack ads and robocalls.Maybe next time don't poke the bear and you won't have to deal with the results. It's not right to dox or threaten, but you're 100% open to receiving criticism for your American style attacks.

Politics I regret my vote for mayor and I feel like shit

For context, this was my first election (I turned 18 about a month ago).
I knew I wanted to vote, beacuse I’ve always been someone who’s thought politics was important. However, I didn’t really like any of the candidates so I didn’t know who I’d vote for, I just knew I didn’t want Horwath again.
I had a family member who was big on Cooper, so I did some surface level research and thought he was okay so I voted for him.
It wasn’t until after that I learnt he’s someone with completely different morals from me and now I feel so stupid for making such a dumb vote. He’s actually someone I’m completely against and it’s making me feel so stupid for not doing more research, especially beacuse I’ve been someone who thinks social issues are important. I genuinely don’t know what happened to me in that booth and I hate it.
I’m so glad he didn’t win, but the guilt I feel is really awful.

Municipal Election 2026 Shout outs to the moderator team for r/Hamilton!

The discourse surrounding this election has been truly horrendous nearly everywhere online - but I want to give a shout out to the moderator team for r/Hamilton for not only doing a very good job enforcing their own rules - but by also just fostering a respectful space for discussion of civic matters. It was nice over the last several months that I could come here and not be repulsed the moment I look at the comments - this is a real achievement and I know it wasn't easy.

Where To Buy Recommendations for pc builders who will assemble your components for you

I have nearly acquired every component for my new pc. 11 generations since my last build. I don't mind mechanical diagnostic, but software stuff really gives me the heebeegeebeez. I don't mind paying the slight premium for putting things together and sorting out the bios and ram profiles.

I've read great things about memory express, but the waitlist for them is months long.

Has anyone used revive computers or apocalypse repair
