Mod Post CanadaJobs Community Flair

At long last, we're finally launching flair at r/CanadaJobs. Here is the first draft flair with some inline guidance for each:

Flair Only Available to Mods:

  • Mod Post: I'll use these whenever sharing an announcement, requesting community feedback, etc.
  • Trusted Canada Jobs Partner: These tags will be reserved for organizations the mod team has personally met with via video call and vetted for legitimacy. These are not paid postings -- no money is changing hands for any posts in this community in accordance with rule #7 (no spam). Pay special attention to posts from these organizations.
  • Ask Me Anything (AMA): AMAs will be hosted with advocates and trusted partners. If you see this tag, it has been sanctioned by the mod team. It means we have vetted the individual(s)/organization conducting the event.

Community Flair:

  • Job Search Question: Questions about interviews, resume/cover letters (note: there is a separate flair if you're looking for an actual resume review), job boards, etc.
  • Career Advice Request: Looking to pivot into something new? Need help navigating compensation increases and promotions? Just starting out and need help figuring out which path to choose?
  • Industry Specific Question: If you're looking for advice about a specific industry (e.g., healthcare, tech, finance, trades), this is your tag.
  • Resume Review Request: If you need a resume review, be sure to anonymize it, removing all personally identifiable information. If someone seeks resume feedback and you feel qualified to provide it, be honest, helpful, and kind about it.
  • Vent - In Need of Empathy, Kindness: For those in need of a kind ear, so you can share your struggles and challenges, and feel heard and supported by your community. When someone uses this tag, take it seriously. Treat them with the utmost kindness and empathy, listening and holding space. This tag is not for seeking advice, so don't offer it unless it is explicitly asked for.
  • Job Search Wisdom to Share: If you have a great tip that can benefit the community, share it (no spam still applies).
  • Is this a scam? This one should be pretty self-explanatory. If your Spidey-sense is going off about a potential opportunity, ask the community for insights.
  • FREE CAREER RESOURCE (Not Spam/Ad): Non-profits, higher-ed, and other organizations providing free job seeker resources such as career fairs, resume reviews, interview prep, etc. Resources should be completely free and should NOT be linked to monetized platforms or products.
  • HIRING - Career/Gig Opportunity: This tag is for legitimate job/gig postings that align with community guidelines (see sidebar).
  • Wins & Success Stories: If you nailed the interview (or managed to get one after a long dry spell), received the offer or promotion, or have another job-related win you want to share, tag it and we will celebrate you as a community.
  • Scam / Unethical Job Warning (First-Hand Experience): If you have been scammed or seen evidence of a specific scam that impacts Canadian job seekers, use this tag. First-hand experience only. Provide evidence. No hearsay or conjecture. No LMIA/TFW-related posts. Read the sidebar for instructions on reporting abuse of LMIA programs or temporary foreign workers.

Flair was created based on a first-pass review of the most recent community posts. I recognize I may not have captured all the primary use cases in creating these, so please drop your suggestions below if there's something I've missed.

This Community Is: Anti-Hate, Anti-Division, Anti-Greed, Pro-Social, Pro-Worker, Pro-Unity.

After reading many xenophobic, divisive, hostile, unproductive comments today, I feel the need to share about what this community is and is not so we're all on the same page...

We acknowledge there are many companies taking advantage of LMIA/TFW programs, exploiting immigrant workers, and driving wages and labour standards down throughout Canada. Offshoring, also responsible for the loss of Canadian jobs, has been a common practice for a long time now. Following the money, it is the corporations and wealthy that benefit from the race to the bottom in employment. These same greedy people will gladly replace every single human worker with AI as soon as possible.

We also recognize that the current employment situation in Canada is not okay. But there are multiple issues at play, ALL of which are caused by greed and corruption. There is a global trade war fueling corporate uncertainty, hiring freezes, and layoffs. AI disruption also fits into the job supply vs demand issue. There is abuse of LMIA/TFW programs. There's plenty more nuance than meets the eye. Blame is the quickest, easiest path and scapegoats can be found everywhere.

If you want to blame a group for the issues we're seeing, blame the big businesses and monopolies out there and the sociopathic CEOs and other executives. Follow the money. Follow the lobbying. Big money is a part of politics on both ends of the spectrum. Psychopaths/sociopaths are notoriously drawn to the role of CEO. Look it up. Many executives go on to become politicians. Following that logic, there's a pretty good chance many politicians fall into those psychopathic/sociopathic buckets too... They then oscillate between politics and business in a nepotistic, self-serving nightmare. How many working class, non-landlord, pay cheque to pay cheque politicians are there in Canada or beyond?

It is not okay to blame the immigrant population for causing the sphere of issues around TFW/LMIA programs. People come to Canada in search of a better life, facing wars, famine, displacement, and other issues most of us here can't fathom. Many of these people are then placed in highly exploitative employment situations. Go look some of these people in the eyes and talk to them face-to-face, and seek to understand them and their story, before passing judgement or hate on them. Xenophobic rhetoric and hate speech and that will NEVER be tolerated in r/CanadaJobs. Feel free to start your own community if that's your bag.

We understand that people in this community are upset and afraid about the state of the Canadian economy and are struggling to find work right now. We see you. It is unquestionably, fucking tough and people are hurting, scared, and upset right now. No question.

That is why we are working hard at creating a united, connected, supportive, inclusive, understanding community here. That is what Project Belonging is about (see Automod for details). The way we see it, division is getting worse and so too are the issues of rampant greed and corruption. Following the money, it is the non-working class that benefits when the working class is divided against itself.

If you want to see change then learn how to unite through finding common ground, engage in respectful debate & share ideas, consider new perspectives, and come together as a collective. Speak in a loud voice that cannot be ignored. Shouting blame and hatred on Reddit isn't going to fix what's broken. Neither is complacency and endless complaining. Rules 4 - 7 exist because of the amount of division and hatred that falls from these topics. Nobody wins in those threads. We've been watching this pattern unfold and get worse since the community was founded in 2011.

Did you know that this and other now large job seeker communities were founded through offering free resume reviews and serving job seekers directly (until the volume became prohibitive)? You can look that up too through post/comment history. We didn't ask for their political or ideological affiliations or countries of origin.

We founded this community on the belief that when we serve others and help them succeed, we also create success for ourselves. Serving the greater good is self-serving. Win-win. The priority of personal gain is the game played by the non-working class and we see how that one-sided model is working in our world.

Instead of shouting about topics that divide, we're here to close the gap, create more unity, connection, support, and community. This subreddit exists to serve the best interests of working class Canadians on the right, left, center and everything along the political spectrum.

Please understand this statement represents non-negotiable values, guidelines, and rules for r/CanadaJobs. Those things will be fiercely protected. If you don't align with the concepts in this thread, this isn't the place for you. If you believe in creating a more connected, socially and economically thriving, kind, and compassionate Canada where we support and help one another, this is your community.

Would there still be a youth unemployment crisis today if the market wasn't flooded with foreign workers?

Part of the reason youth unemployment is at an all time high is due to FWs taking up majority of entry level jobs that would otherwise be the gateway for graduate students to break into their field of study.

Why is ghosting job applicants so common in Canada?

Hello folks,

Just a rant.

I've heard that some Canadian companies ghost candidates because they want to avoid confrontation. I get that recruiters can be busy, but isn't it still pretty rude? Even after sending a follow-up email, you often get no reply at all.

The job market is already tough, and being ghosted just makes the whole experience even more frustrating. This has happened to me multiple times. I don't expect detailed feedback, just a simple automated rejection email would be enough. What do you guys think?

---

Updated: In my case, I emailed the company to let them know that I needed to reschedule my second-round interview (I had already passed the first round) because I was not able to attend an onsite interview at the moment. They said it was no problem, but I have emailed them twice since then to follow up about rescheduling, and I have not heard back from them.

Biotech sales jobs in Canada?

Hi everyone!

I'm moving to Canada this year as a new PR and I'm starting to plan my job search.

I’m a chemist by training, with about 1.5 years of experience in biotech sales/business development. I’m interested in staying close to the life sciences sector, especially commercial roles.

I would really appreciate any advice on:

  • Which cities would give me the best opportunities for someone with this background?
  • Are there particular biotech/pharma hubs or companies I should focus on?
  • Would my French (currently B2 level) be a significant advantage in the job market? Would it be worth investing the effort to reach C1?

Thanks a lot for any insights or personal experiences!

Background check through Sterling

My sister was resuming her career after her maternity in 2021. She was unable to get any job offers with her actual resume.

Her ex-husband (who was her husband in 2021) had a mortgage business, so my sister updated her resume by showing that she worked in the business for the year she was raising her child, and was able to convert an opportunity with a financial institution in 2022. Sterling had done her background check that year.

She has recently got an even better job opportunity in another financial institution for a much better pay.

She wants to provide her actual resume (since ex husband won’t help) with the maternity gap in 2021 for background check by Sterling.

As per my understanding if she mentions the truth in this background check then it should not affect her process.

However , do these background check organizations maintain the 4 year old application she had filled or do they verify only what is stated in the application form provided by the organization?

Is it worth my time networking with consulting companies?

Hi everyone, I’ve been trying to break into occupational health and safety by applying to health and safety coordinator roles but haven’t been able to get a response yet. My friend gave me a list of health and safety consulting companies he did marketing work for. How should I approach them as someone just looking to network? Not as a client who is looking for health and safety consulting. Any advice would be appreciated. Hope you all have a nice day.

(CA) Is this a legit company?: https://sifatfreight.ca/index.php?p=application

Website is very suspicious since it looks and seems AI generated. I have received emails from their HR department (but I don’t even remember applying for a job from there from their website, LinkedIn or even indeed. Google shows it’s a legit company but the application form they send me looks weird, I am unsure if it’s legit or not as a company. Thanks!

Took a part time jobbut already considering quiting

I got hired at a pet store recently. I sent my resume for the keyholder position at $19.25 part time. They gave me a trial first. So I went to both stores and worked a day for 3 hrs each since it is required to work between stores. I have worked 3 shifts so far and I'm already realizing they only wanted me as a part time employee and not a keyholder as I'm only getting 9-15 hrs a week. I didn't feel this was only going to be 2-3 hrs each shift but be there 4 days a week. I have to drive 20 minutes each day there and back in both directions. I feel I'm spending money vs making it now. I'm only making $18.25 currently until I get promoted to keyholder who knows when that will be. I don't know what I should do.. Continue to work 3 hr shifts bringing in less than $1000 a month after taxes or let them know early this isn't going to work.. To fill my suv its $85 right now.

Statutory minimums

If you received a reasonable offer as a mid-senior employee that explicitly referenced statutory minimums as the termination clause, would you accept that risk? Or hold out for something that would offer common law entitlements (3-4 weeks/year of service)?

Is there any jobs that can hire when you didn’t finish high school and have no experience or qualifications for anything?

I only made it to grade 8 and I don’t have any experience. I live in Ontario/ Quebec but I only speak English. Does anyone know any places or job descriptions that don’t really require anything?
I’m looking on indeed but it’s not offering jobs that fit my description.
I have some limitations on physical work but I’m willing to try anything at this point
More info: I don’t have a car, I have back problems and get frequent migraines that can sometimes get in the way of daily life. I’ve never had a job because I’m mentally ill (it’s being managed)

Headhunter/talent scouts

Hi! I am trying to look for trustworthy headhunters or talent scouts to help me connect with potential employers based on my profile and work experience. I am wondering how effective this pathway might be as just applying to jobs online and connecting with people on LinkedIn, scheduling coffee chats and networking etc is not yielding much. Please suggest some Toronto based people I could get in touch with

What is the interview process like now for higher skilled high wage jobs?

Hi everyone, I know this job market is awful and really hard, and I’d love to help anyone whose having a rough time or just wants someone to talk to or be friends with. So I’ll just start off with saying that before asking my question.

I realized the absurd process of interviews for low-skilled minimum wage jobs where managers ghost you after giving you an offer, or them saying they’ll get back to you but never do. And many other annoying things that people have to deal with when it comes to landing these jobs.

I’m more so curious about the interview process for more higher skilled jobs such as industrial hygienist, occupational health and safety jobs, operation coordinator jobs, etc. It took me 4 years during my time in uni to land a dead end minimum wage job and I got it though an employment agency just when my financial situation was looking bleak. I’ve been struggling with this job market ever since 2022 but I learned a lot about how difficult it is during my experiences over those 4 years. But now that I’ve made a career pivot and am now trying to land a job in occupational health and safety it is still difficult to land an Interview despite me having experience and specific certifications and education required for those entry level jobs. But I’m more so curious about the interview process, I know at some point it will happen, I won’t give up. Is it usually just continuous rounds of interviews? Do hiring managers still ghost you for these more skilled high wage jobs? What have been your experiences?

I’d appreciate any insight, and if any of you wanna connect or just want some friends or someone to talk to during a time where everything is bleak, my dms are open. I hope you all have a good day.

Just laid off and have a question

So, on a modern resume, is it still standard practice to put a full address? I have not been in the job market for a while, so I am assuming things have changed. I would rather not put my full address out there if I don’t need to.

Corporate Job Seekers in 40’s

Hello Folks,

I am 38 and I am in Marketing.
I’ve had a very turbulent career with many gaps because I’ve lived and worked in many countries.

Everytime I relocate or move, I had to start over from scratch. This has severely impacted my career growth and stability.

From hindsight, I don’t have substantial number of years to add to my work experience and i feel nowhere.

I already tried freelancing for a few years due to difficultly in finding full time jobs and that’s further deteriorated my chances of finding meaningful full time work.

Plus, ageism is real.
I look way older for my age and it’s a weird feeling when folks who are much younger are directors and team leaders.

Life has not been smooth for me in Canada and I had to deal with a lot of mental health issues after losing my lifetime savings.

I am in a better headspace now but it’s difficult to repair the damage done to my career and I don’t have much savings to my name. I was planing to retire by 40 but life had other plans and several curve balls to throw at me.

I have a feeling it’s not gonna get any better.
I am holding onto the last strings of hope to revive my career which has been in doldrums.

Just sharing this.
Thank You for reading.

Job Decision

Hey everyone I'm debating on whether to go back to uni or go join a 1-6 month job training program that can get me immediately hired. I'm not picky and can relocate - I'd like a plurality of options. I got accepted into nursing but it's not for me. So no healthcare options. I've looked into waste water operations and was thinking of going down to the mines but I have no idea where to start. If anyone has any input or ideas, much appreciated.

Job lost to AI

1.2k Upvotes

I worked as a building inspector for a province. The taxpayer spent a lot of money for me to get trained (flights, exams, books, equipment, hotels, car rentals, food, gas and wages). It was billed in the tens of thousands over the period of one year.

Recently, I was told because I am the youngest and most junior inspector that I am going to lose my job. This is because the municipality I work for along with some villages and towns we get contracts for is implementing a new AI technology. This AI technology is going to cut wages and leave a lot more money for the municipality to spend elsewhere. (I was only doing final building inspections).

Basically I was told that the municipality is going to have one inspector on staff and the person goes to a job site with a 360 camera and record everything, plug the video recording into a new AI system. From there the AI tells what needs to be fixed or replaced along with other discrepancies.

I have reached out to other municipalities but none of them are hiring building inspectors.
I'm not really sure what I should do here because I wanted a career out of this. I was thinking about applying for a police officer. I have a newborn at home and wife that needs to be taken care of and now I am out of a job.

I've thought about seriously leaving Canada and starting up my own business abroad back in my home country. What should I do here ?
