Use the appropriate support channel for your distribution. Arch is DIY distribution and we expect you to guide us through your system when providing support. Using an installer defeats this expectation.

Why was the beginners guide removed?

It carried a lot of maintenance on the wiki admin as it duplicated a lot of information, and everyone wanted their addition included. It was scrapped for a compact model that largely referenced the main wiki pages.

SUPPORT G502 Lightspeed phantom scroll when flicking

• Upvotes

Hey guys,

I recently switched to Arch (Wayland) and I've been dealing with a super annoying issue while gaming with my wireless G502 Lightspeed.

I have an in-game action bound to Wheel Up, and almost every time I do a fast flick or lift the mouse to reset its position on the pad, the scroll wheel triggers on its own. And yes, the wheel is locked in tactile/ratchet mode, not free-spin. I used this exact same mouse on Windows and never had this happen once.

When I checked sudo libinput debug-events, I saw that just shaking or lifting the mouse floods the terminal with tiny high-res scroll events (vert 1.88/15.0* and 3.75/30.0*) without my finger even touching the wheel.

What I've tried so far:

  • udev hwdb rules: Tried setting MOUSE_WHEEL_CLICK_ANGLE=15 and LIBINPUT_ATTR_SCROLL_WHEEL_HIRES=0. udevadm showed them applied, but libinput completely ignored them and kept spamming the 1.88/15.0* events.
  • libinput quirks: Added AttrEventCode=-REL_WHEEL_HI_RES in /etc/libinput/local-overrides.quirks. That killed the 1.88 spam, but threw a red kernel bug warning in libinput and made regular scrolling super inconsistent (sometimes scrolling doesn't register at all), so I reverted everything.

Has anyone else dealt with this on a wireless G502 or any other mouse?

SUPPORT PC enters read-only mode when attempting to delete a file

I would like to delete some files stored on my computer. The trash bin is empty, but when I try to delete them, I get an error in Dolphin, and after that, everything switches to read-only mode. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I’m not very experienced.

QUESTION KDE ruined my desktop/system layout and organization. How can I revert everything back to a clean/vanilla state without reinstalling?

• Upvotes

I downloaded KDE on my system with a vanilla arch distribution. That changed the file organization of the entire system I suppose. I want to revert those changes, is there a way to do that without installing the OS again?

NOTEWORTHY Frankestein Arch Linux (will I get scrutinized for this?)

Idk if this was a horrible idea. But Gemini (AI) helped me to turn my non-arch distro onto Arch through pacinstall and pacman-static (and no, this is not a clean install AT ALL, meaning this is the exact same installation).

The history of my installation is basically this:

Debian 13 Trixie (KDE) > Kubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble > Kubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute > KDE Neon 26.04 LTS Resolute (Unstable) > Kubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute > KDE Neon 26.04 LTS Resolute (Unstable) > Kubuntu 26.04 LTS Resolute > Arch Linux > CachyOS (the CachyOS part is irrelevant but I prefer to be honest, to not leave anything out)

I had to create /etc/pacman.conf files to be able to install pacman from pacman-static (skipped security keys at first) and then restart to arch linux iso to arch-chroot, removing apt and it's dpkg files once sudo pacman -Syu --overwrite '*' --noconfirm was complete.

To fix the kernel panic (attempted to kill init because /sbin/init was not found) I had to remove debian-specific GNU folders (like x86_64-linux-gnu and replace them with Arch equivalents) and files like update-grub (and update-initramfs), install arch's files using pacman, initramfs had to be adjusted too, a lot of unused debian-specific systemd daemon services had to be removed, adding pam files for sudo and user and a lot of chown to make arch be able to recognize it the user (fixing permissions too), changing fstab to Arch format, changing /etc/os-release to identify Arch, even the DE (KDE) had to be reinstalled to Arch's version to get it to work (journalctl, pacman -Qm helped me A LOT here too).

Yes, even things with wayland and X11 had to be fixed on this installation to get it to work (pacman overwriting files straight from Arch's core, extra and multilib repositories helped a lot with the transition), I had to delete leftover Debian/Kubuntu files that Arch doesn't use too.

If arch didn't have enough equivalents, I used the AUR too (yay), to reinstall my software.

So in conclusion it can work (with EXT4, GRUB2, systemd, bash for terminal, basically most defaults from Debian derivatives remained on purpose) but you would have to tweak things a lot to get it as a native Arch installation but I don't recommend this to anyone (yes I did this on my daily-drive laptop, I did create a backup vhd of my kubuntu installation in case it broke), just wanted you to know that Linux can get to this level too!

SUPPORT I did a oops

So short version is I'm having that issue with network manager stuttering while connected to the internet which isn't that big of a deal but it is annoying playing online. I was following instructions on reinstalling it seeing if that would work. I made a typo and it didn't reinstall before rebooting.

Where do I download a copy of the install file so I can transfer it by USB stick to my computer to fix the oopsies? Or if you have a better network manager link me to it?

SUPPORT I'm losing my mind with my WiFi card

Realtek RTL8852BE Wi-Fi repeatedly crashes on Arch Linux (rtw89 firmware hangs, PCI resets fail)

I am going insane here, please help.

I've been trying to fix a Wi-Fi issue on my Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (2022), I'm on Arch of course.

My Wi-Fi works normally after booting, but after a random amount of time, anything from a few minutes, sometimes up to two hours it stops working completely.

NetworkManager and the interface becomes unavailable, and iw dev wlo1 link reports Not connected.

Restarting NetworkManager, toggling Wi-Fi, reloading kernel modules, and even resetting the PCIe device all fail and I just reboot.

QUESTION Would arch be supported for new eac2?

Seeing all the news on linux support for eac2 I was excited until I saw that Arch isn't listed as a supported distro.

Would that mean some of us would have to switch to cachy or something. Is there anything official or just speculation on how it would have to work for the rest of the distros?

SUPPORT | SOLVED Sudden poor performance in fullscreen applications

The past couple of days I've noticed a sharp decrease in performance in fullscreen applications, especially GPU intensive games. Using mangohud I can see unusually low GPU utilisation, though strangely enough unfocusing causes my game to perform more like how it should (it suddenly shoots up in FPS!)

I've had this problem on my old install, and a new install I have just created to see if that would fix it. I wonder if it's something with the GPU drivers?

For reference I'm using an RX 6700XT with a Ryzen 5 5600X.

SUPPORT Unsafe Shutdowns counter keeps rising on my NVMe drives

I have a Lenovo Gaming 3 15ARH7 laptop. At first, Arch Linux was installed on a Micron MTFDKCD512TFK, and the Unsafe Shutdowns counter rose on that drive too while Arch was running from it. Later I bought an HP SSD FX900 Plus 512GB and installed Arch Linux on it. Windows is now on the Micron drive.

Since I bought the HP drive, its Unsafe Shutdowns counter has been rising almost every time I shut down or reboot. Over the last few days it went from 188 to 194, and I can’t find a pattern. I shut down normally, through the KDE menu, and I’ve tried everything I could find. I checked SMART, which shows no media errors and about 1% wear. I also checked for firmware updates: fwupd finds none for the HP drive, and I can’t update the laptop’s BIOS myself bcz windows only, and I don’t expect a BIOS update for this model anymore. btrfs device stats is clean, and a btrfs scrub finished with no errors. The shutdown logs end cleanly, with /home, /boot and /tmp unmounted before power-off, and there are no suspend or lid events in the journal.

I’ve searched forums, documentation, and asked AI assistants about this, and I’ve followed the suggestions I could find. The most I got was logs, and those show nothing abnormal to me or to the tools I asked. I still don’t know why the counter keeps rising, and I’d like to find out what it means in practice and what I should do and I don’t want to go back to Windows because of this, but the fact that the counter keeps rising bothers me a lot, and I’d rather understand it than ignore it.

Model name: AMD Ryzen 5 6600H with Radeon Graphics

Media and Data Integrity Errors: 0
Model Number: HP SSD FX900 Plus M.2 512GB
Firmware Version: SN25043
Firmware Updates (0x14): 2 Slots, no Reset required
Percentage Used: 1%
Power On Hours: 138
Unsafe Shutdowns: 194
Media and Data Integrity Errors: 0

OS: Arch Linux x86_64

I’ve had the Lenovo for about two years, and I bought the HP drive almost a year ago. I don’t remember the exact date.

DISCUSSION Recent Convert

Hey y'all! I hope these kinds of posts are welcome here. I recently made the jump from my main desktop being a Windows machine to Arch Linux and have been loving it so far! I have to credit a YouTuber named Josean Martinez for doing a great walkthrough series on setting up Arch -- though I opted for using `pacman` way more than he did.

I have had experience with setting up and using Linux in the past. I have an old Thinkpad that has had Ubuntu on it for years, but I must say I MUCH prefer Arch and Pacman.

I've got Arch, Hyprland, Waybar, Rofi, and then a bunch of terminal and game related packages.

I mostly use my personal desktop for coding, watching streams, and gaming and feel like I've got all those covered in a comfortable spot right now:

  • My dotfiles, including NeoVim, is setup and working well.
  • I've got Zen Browser installed.
  • Steam, along with BattleNet thru Steam, are up and running and working great.

I haven't hit any crazy snags yet, but I feel like my setup is fairly minimal as well and haven't even tested my microphone or webcam yet -- but hopefully those aren't too cumbersome to get working (if they don't work out of the box). My only regret is not making the switch sooner. This has been a joy to setup and tweak!

Idk what happened, it worked till recently, but basically on my laptop, I used the dGPU only when I was playing games, but recently apps like Firefox, and Kwin Wayland / XWaylandd keep pinging my dGPU and waking it up, and that makes my system stutter

DISCUSSION Will arch eventually have some kinda copilot type thing?

So I used to have to read forums or ask people for help... now if I have any issue with Linux I can just ask Claude or even chatGPT and it'll fix anything.

For example I wanted to auto forward a VPN port to Qbittorrent and it wrote me a script that just works.

Do you think we'll have some kind of AI assistant in archlinux at some point? It would help noobs a lot too.

QUESTION Calendar with Apple calendar sync support and VIM keys

Hey, guys. I look for a calendar that would support sync with my Apple calendar and preferably had VIM keys support. I currently use rencal, but I would like something that I don't have to grab from the AUR.
