In terms of story, Resonance is very much on par with Plague tale Innocence imo. Requiem had the advantage of being a sequel and piggybacking off of Innocence, but they really took the story further with it. It set the tone for what I think most of us expected of any future Plague tale game. Requiem did what very few games would allow with one of their protagonists and that really shook up the fandom. Also the 18 rating definitely upped the violence and depressing moments and brought out a different side of Amicia which was very visceral. Resonance had a great story, and subverted some expectations with one of their characters (Faro) while doing smth very unique and frightening with the Macula and the original siblings being counterparts of the original mythological characters. It blended in very seamlessly in the lore of the games. With Requiem you already got a taste of fairy tale elements what with the island and the magical cure and it was the perfect decision to work in actual mythology alongside the Macula whose existence is still a supernatural mystery to us.
I really enjoyed the stealth moments and the combination of the stealthing and combat at the end. I wish it lasted longer the maze was super fun. I do think Leni died a bit too early to get in my feels but what really did it for me with her was the second time we saw her infected basically. Got some tears out of me, it was very sad to see her body disgraced like that by the Macula. Faro on the other hand, while his death was expected bcs Plague tale has a formula by now, it hit me really hard. They explored his character and the layers of his relationship with Sophia very well. It's hard to give the same runtime and depth to 2 side characters when you have to focus on the Main characters development most of all, I think. But Leni as a character was great, too bad she doesn't shine as much as she could've.
My main gripes with this game is the combat and puzzles. The puzzles for some reason didn't have the option to tell your sidekick when to stop helping and how to help in puzzles that required their aid to begin with like in Requiem. I don't know why they changed that. It made the puzzles much easier than they could've been.
And the combat was really fun but they made you fight enemies as a treat it felt like. There weren't that many encounters per chapter and when you did fight them you fought at best like 5 or 6 dudes and 3 at worst (outside of that section with Faro on the bridge). The combat didn't feel like it branched out enough throughout the game despite the skill up tree, there weren't any survival elements like with Amicia. Sure Sophia is much stronger and I'm not saying she had to have a stealth mechanic weaved in the actiony parts cause that beats the purpose of the hack and slash but the combat could've had more complex elements to heal Sophia for example, not just killing an enemy to gain the health back. Debuffs could've been worked in or smth entirely different idk. Too scripted all around. I played it on normal for like half the game and then switched to hard but even then I felt it was a bit too easy. Yes it required more quick reflexes which made it more challenging in that respect but I expected smth more than just Sophias health pool to be smaller and the enemies more aggressive. And even then you kill them too fast. Maybe if you had stats to your weapon and the health bar of enemies wasn't segmented in bars the combat would've lasted longer even with the number of enemies being not as high as the previous games.
All in all the story was amazing, it did something new with the incorporation of mythology and past/present sections with Theseus/Ariadne (anyone found Ariadne as Theseus super hot as well? No? Just me?) It is a plague tale certified. The combat and puzzles were just—good— leaving me wanting more.
