Reminder: The primary purpose of this subreddit is for learning Ukrainian. Нагадування: головна мета цього сабреддіту — вивчення української мови.

Hello all,

As this subreddit has gained popularity there has also been an increase in posts that would be better suited elsewhere. As stated in the title, the primary purpose of this subreddit is for learning Ukrainian. The secondary purpose of this subreddit is for discussions about Ukrainian culture but it is intended for that to be still at least tangentially related to the Ukrainian language. Please consider this list of subreddits for your other Ukraine-related needs.

Усім привіт,

Оскільки цей сабреддіт набув популярності, також зросла кількість дописів, які були б доречнішими в інших спільнотах. Як зазначено в заголовку, головна мета цього сабреддіту — вивчення української мови. Додаткова мета — обговорення української культури, однак такі обговорення мають бути принаймні дотично пов’язані з українською мовою.

Для інших тем, пов’язаних з Україною, будь ласка, перегляньте цей список сабреддітів.

I was curious to ask people who already been diving into our culture for a while, what is you favorite Ukrainian song (or songs) so far, and why?

It's interesting to learn from others around the globe what strikes their fancy about our music.
I personally can't give you just one, so here's the playlist instead

Has anyone here tried writing the Radiodictation?

As a Ukrainian student, I write dictations fairly often as part of my education, but I’m curious whether people learning Ukrainian as a foreign language take part in this one too. Every year, there’s quite a bit of debate over the reader’s delivery, their professionalism, and the text itself. Personally, I really enjoyed both the text and the reading this year, which is more than I can say about last year’s dictation,,,,, If you’re learning Ukrainian, I definitely encourage you to give it a try! I’d love to hear what you thought of it!!

Words for Love?

Hi everyone. I’m working on a craft project and wanted to make triple sure I had things correct before I can’t undo them.

What are the most grammatically basic and neutral forms of the word for general love and also romantic/physical/sexual love?

I’m worried about them ending up with different conjugations on my project.

Дякую ☺️

What’s the Point of the movie "A Friend of the Deceased (1997)?"

Please bear in mind that this is my first Ukrainian film, and I found a lot of things in it rather weird.

  1. Anatoli’s relationship with his wife: She simply leaves him for another man, yet near the end of the movie, he runs into her casually, as if nothing has happened.

  2. The stolen wine: Anatoli steals a bottle of wine from a shop, but the shopkeeper barely reacts and makes no attempt to chase him.

  3. The bar owner: The woman behind the bar simply offers him a drink for free. But they are not like friends.

  4. Hiring a hitman: Anatoli hires a contract killer as casually as if he were buying groceries.

  5. The hitman calls him: This is perhaps the strangest part for me. The hitman himself calls Anatoli, so why can’t Anatoli simply cancel the contract when he changes his mind? Why does he have to go as far as hiring another hitman to kill the first one?

Throughout the film, people behave in ways that seem completely abnormal to me, at least from my perspective.

I understand that the film takes place against the backdrop of an economic crisis. However, I don’t think that alone explains the strange behaviour of the characters or the way events unfold.

So, what exactly is the point of this movie?

Pronunciation tips for Russian speaker learning Ukrainian?

I am a native Russian speaker trying to learn Ukrainian and I was curious, what are common mistakes that Russian speakers make with pronunciation? What do native Ukrainian speakers automatically clock as a "Russian accent"? I assumed some of it would be the "opposite" of a Ukrainian accent in Russian (like pronouncing a hard Russian "Г" instead of the softer Ukrainian version) but are there any quirks that may not be as obvious? Looking to improve my pronunciation, so any and all advice is welcome

Gifts when visiting?

I'm planning on visiting my friend in Ukraine for the first time. I will be meeting her family as well. I'm having a hard time understanding what is best appreciated when visiting someone's house. Something from my country? Something from Ukraine? Freshly baked breads or sweets? Drinks? Non-food items? Do I need to bring something for everyone? Thanks in advance!

🇺🇦 Looking for Ukrainian Friends to Learn the Language and Practise Speaking!

Привіт! 👋 (Hello!)

Hi everyone! 😊

I'm from India and currently living in the UAE. I want to learn Ukrainian 🇺🇦, but I believe the best way to learn a language is by connecting with native speakers and having real conversations.

I'm a complete beginner, so I know almost nothing about Ukrainian yet. I'm looking for Ukrainian people who would be interested in chatting, helping me practise the language, and sharing a little about Ukrainian culture and daily life.

In return, I'd be happy to help you practise English or learn a little about Indian culture! 🇮🇳

We can chat through Reddit, WhatsApp, Telegram, or practise speaking through voice calls if we're both comfortable.

I'm not looking for anything complicated — just genuine friendships, language exchange, and learning from each other.

If you're Ukrainian and interested, feel free to comment below or send me a DM. I'd love to connect with you! 😊

Дякую! (Thank you!) 🇺🇦❤️

Ukrainian Learning Materials (Self Promotion)

Добрий день!

I made a small learning platform called Acadebeat. It's basically an opinionated document editor you can record audio into. Tools make it useful for language learners.

I paid a friend to help with the first Ukrainian resource, and I'm happy with the result. I'd really like to know if this is a helpful way for you to learn.

The idea is for people to make money from their materials based on how learners interact with them. It can also help with discoverability for independent teachers.

Here's what my friend made.

Дякую за ваш час!

Could someone tell me what Marge is saying? By sound I am hearing Ти став жадібний зі що все брехливими адвокатами це в де лікарями which obviously doesn’t make sense. I get the gist but can’t figure out the exact words.

In the English she says “all this shiftiness and lying and phony doctors”

The verb “Бути” (To Be) in Past & Future Tenses!

Thumbnail

Усім привіт! 🇺🇦

Last time, we learned that in the present tense, Ukrainian usually drops the verb бути (“to be”).

But what happens in the past and future tenses?

Good news: in these tenses, we do use the verb бути! It changes depending on the tense, and in the past tense, it also changes according to gender and number.

Study the presentation to learn how it works!

Your turn! Share your observations in the comments and try writing your own sentences using бути in the past and future tenses.

I'll be happy to help if you have any questions! 😊

Do you know why "у", "в", and "на" are used here? The English version simply uses "in" for all three cities

Tips for Flash Cards?

As I'm was working on my Anki deck just now, I wondered whether there are any common (or special) tips or tricks for good flashcards for Ukrainian. E.g., how do you handle verbs (недоконаний/доконаний від), do you include the stress markers, etc?

To staple on a concrete question: I created a new note type for verbs, so I can enter the imperfective and perfective aspects separately and the translation only once, but can generate plenty of cards from that. But I'm not sure yet if that's actually a good idea, or just needlessly complicated.

Дякую заздалегідь!
