Nostalgia/Retro If you have been overclocking CPUs forever, what was your first, and what was your best?
My first was a 486 (cant remember my best speed). My best was a P166 @ 250 stable for years. Im only counting stable usable system, not Liquid nitrogen & stuff, like it runs for a long time usable. Let's hear your stories.... I can't wait to hear them.

Nostalgia/Retro i will fucking miss consoles
i fucking loved my ps3 and ps4
i could put on a game and play it with my brother on one screen. we could both be logged in at once and open each other's game setting, inventories, etc. depending on which controller made the input. you could only run one non-system app at once - the video game. so there was no bullshit such as steam client or whatever. you just boot the console, press the game and play. all within a unified interface
i'm not coming back to playstation, or any other corporation. i want to get a gaming pc next time, but i will miss consoles

Nostalgia/Retro Computer Gaming World From November 1997 - Outer Wrap
2003 NOT 1997
The issues and discs are archived online, but the outer wrappers rarely survived. Here is an especially cool one. Not sure why I said 1997 - I'm working on a project involving PowerVR 3d acceleration and I guess I had 1997 on my mind.

Nostalgia/Retro Nobody asked for it: Blu-rays on Windows 95/98...
If you ever wanted to read a Blu-ray disc on Windows 95 or 98, now you can, using a driver called WINUDF, which adds UDF 2.6 support. And as an added bonus, it might even be possible to play encrypted commercial Blu-rays with VLC. Some older versions of VLC run on Windows 98, but decryption doesn't work yet.

Nostalgia/Retro I was looking at the old prices of the 1080p pc I built last summer and I could cry
I knew about the pc parts going crazy but I assumed it was for mainly high end parts. I never could’ve imagined that my own pc would’ve doubled in value

Nostalgia/Retro Multi-booting Windows 1.01 to Windows 10 on a non-Intel/AMD laptop (?!?)
Around this time last year, I worked on a similar project but with a standard Intel-based PC. Everything went quite smoothly so this time I want to challenge myself a bit-and it’s also a way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of Windows XP.
Many of you might wonder how a laptop that doesn't use an Intel or AMD chip can possibly have such broad compatibility. Well, if you’ve ever looked into the history of the x86 architecture you’ll find that besides Intel and AMD there were several other companies that also produced x86 chips tho but in much smaller quantities. Notable among them is VIA Technologies which holds x86 licenses acquired through its purchase of Cyrix and Centaur, the two companies that had entered into cross-licensing agreements with Intel in the late 90s.
And what I have here is the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC powered by VIA C7-M, the last x86 32 bit CPU that was made by a third party. From the moment I bought it I knew this is a rare and truly special device, so what better way to explore its potential than to see just how many versions of Windows I could install on. It’s a bit of a shame that it’s a 32 bit CPU meaning the laptop can’t run Windows XP x64 or Windows 11. But in any case, 15 versions of Windows from 1.01 to 10 can certainly be considered a success to me.
The big improvement over the previous project is using Grub4dos bootloader instead of Xfdisk. This allows for direct loading the boot file of each Windows partition, bypassing the intermediate steps such as bootmgr→ntldr→io.sys that were previously required. Overall, the laptop runs stably but it still has some quirks that are unique to this one. You can check out the details of my experience in the video below:
Here are the specs for my laptop:
• CPU: VIA C7-M 1.6GHz
• iGPU: VIA S3 Chrome 9 HC
• Chipset: VIA CN896+VT8237S
• RAM: 2GB DDR2
• Storage: 160GB HDD SATA 2 (IDE mode)
• Display: 8.9 inches WXGA (1280x768)
• Wifi: WLAN 802.11; Bluetooth 2.0

Nostalgia/Retro A trip down the memory lane
Throwback to the era (2006-2008) when gaming was an escape from reality and coping mechanism for my crippling anxiety, depression and loneliness. Those were the days when i was so much fascinated about games. Some of the memorable ones are Motocross Madness 2, Sonic Riders, Hulk (2003), Spider-Man series, GTA Series and many more

Nostalgia/Retro Plain Sight's servers died in 2012. I spent the last couple of weeks bringing it back — now it runs in the browser and still plays with the Steam version
Anyone remember Plain Sight? Beatnik Games, 2010: little robot ninjas with swords, you steal energy from other robots, grow bigger and brighter (so everyone can see you coming), then blow yourself up to bank points. Catch others in the blast and your score multiplies.
When I was a kid it was the filler game at our LAN parties. Whenever we were waiting for someone to finish installing something, or the "main" game was being a pain, someone would start a Plain Sight match. Fast rounds, everybody screaming, zero learning curve. It was the MVP of those nights.
Then the studio closed, the master server went offline, and the game basically died: you couldn't even get past the login screen. I was salty about it for years.
The game was later released as free software, so when the "reverse engineer old stuff with Claude Opus" trend started, I decided to finally do something about it. Here's what came out of it:
- It runs in the browser. The original XNA 3.1 code is ported to FNA and compiled to WebAssembly + WebGL2. No install, no account. Same game, same physics, same art.
- New servers. I rewrote the master server and a Linux dedicated server from the original protocol. There's one server per game mode (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Lighten Up, Ninja! Ninja! Botzilla!, Capture The Flag), and bots keep empty servers alive.
- Anyone can host. "Create a game" on the site spins up a real dedicated server with your settings. It shows up in the list for everyone and shuts down by itself when it's empty.
Cross-play with the Steam version. Browser players and players on the original Steam game end up on the same servers, in the same matches: the original networking runs over UDP, the browser uses WebSockets, and the server speaks both. The Steam client works unmodified. You just point the old master server address to the new one with one line in your hosts file (
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts):31.56.233.188 psmaster.beatnikgames.co.ukThen log in with any name and the servers show up in the list like they used to.
Quality of life. The first time you play, it checks what your PC can handle and picks graphics settings that hold 60 fps. You can rebind keys, and there's an optional "enhanced graphics" mode (SSAO, antialiasing, nicer trails) on top of the original look.
It's a hobby project, so expect some rough edges. If you played it back in the day, or never heard of it and like short chaotic matches, come say hi. Right now it's mostly me and the bots 🙂

Happy to answer questions about the port, the reverse engineering, or how the AI side actually went (spoiler: a lot of "no, that sword is crooked, look again").
