Discussion Why Fedora?

8 Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

I'm about to replace windows 11 on my Surface Laptop Go 2. It's either going to be ubuntu or fedora. I've tested both and they seem to work fine. So, please explain to me what better about fedora, in simple terms. I've used linux on and off for years but only casually. My needs are very modest: chrome/firefox, libreoffice, proton vpn, a text editor, and not much else

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Discussion CachyOS kernel vs Fedora for gaming/college

• Upvotes

Hey I have switched succesfully and happily from Pop os 24.04 to fedora 44 kde spin in late june this year (on linux since march) I have installed bieszczaders repo with cachy os kernel and I am kind of confused as to what to use daily. I mean there probably aren’t that much of a difference other than Cachy goes one number higher every 10 releases it is 7.3.0 when fedor a native is 7.10 7.11 … So for stability I deliberately choose fedora kernel but I sometimes wanna checkout the cachy so I then switch. My question after this is what are your opinions on those kernels and when to use on or the other? What is better?

Discussion Any thoughts on Ludora (a Fedora vased distro)?

9 Upvotes

Hey there. Yesterday I went surfing on Distrowatch to find distros based on Fedora, that are not immutable nor gaming oriented. And I found Ludora.

The reason is that since the kernel 7.x.x, Fedora has been acting weird on my laptop (no display unless I connect an external monitor and a few other bugs)

And so I quickly gave a try to Ludora in a live session this morning, using kernel 7.1.0-100 and... The live ISO seemed to work well. But just wondered if someone actually installed it and was satisfied or disappointed by this distro?

Anyway, since Fedora 45 is releasing soon, I'll wait a bit longer before reinstalling any distro

Discussion Why Does Fedora Modify So Many Components?

• Upvotes

Why does Fedora seem to modify so many components of its own ecosystem? I'm using Fedora Workstation and would like to understand why it uses Fedora's Flatpak repository instead of Flathub.

When testing Cinnamon, I also noticed changes to the theme and other visual elements, rather than keeping the desktop environment's default appearance. Even Firefox seems to have been customized.

What's the reason for these modifications? Why doesn't Fedora preserve the original configurations of the applications and desktop environments it provides?

As yall know fedora 45 has hit another No go and postponed to 1 more week. But this was not internal error but major tech f*ck ups.

Do you think it will actually release now or get postponed further.

Support Fedora 44 fresh install but flatpaks don't open

17 Upvotes

Just installed F44 on an Intel NUC11 (11th Gen i7 Intel iGPU and RTX2060). After the install I updated the system and rebooted. Then I started installing my apps (all flatpaks) from Software Center. However;

  • Floorp -- doesn't open
  • Upscayl -- doesn't open
  • Rapidraw -- doesn't open
  • Curtail -- doesn't open

Those are just for starters, I have no idea which other apps will also not work. Oddly enough, other flatpak apps I installed open just fine (Rustdesk, Constrict, Ente Photos, Lossless Cut, etc.).

I installed Flatseal and enabled every setting for the problem flatpaks but it does not help.

I ran flatpak repair but no dice.

Keep in mind this is a fresh install of Fedora 44 with nothing but updates and the above mentioned flatpaks installed.

I thought maybe something went wonky during the install so I formatted the disk and reinstalled.

Same problems.

Seems strange to me that apps in the App Store don't work.

UPDATE: I formatted yet again, but this time after installing F44 I did not apply any updates, and immediately started installing flatpaks.

Same problem.

Announcement COPR repo for the latest Fish shell

12 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I created a COPR repository for the latest upstream release of the Fish shell on Fedora. Since the official Fedora repositories are still stuck on Fish v4.6.0.

To bypass missing Rust dependency crates in Fedora, the build uses vendored crates managed by an automated GitHub Actions pipeline.

Installation:

```bash
sudo dnf copr enable crian/fish
sudo dnf install fish
```

Currently building for Fedora 43, 44, 45 and Rawhide. Feel free to test it out!

Support Panoramic Monitor dudes....

9 Upvotes

I have two monitors, but one is old and I see to buy a panoramic monitor...
In Windows, I think you can split the screen into several sections, as if they were separate... Can you do that in Linux?

I use Fedora Workstation with GNOME.

Discussion Can Fedora 44 get Plasma 6.8, PLEASE ?

0 Upvotes

I know about the policy of not releasing updates into previous releases until it is in the next new release.

But being that F45 is delayed again, could F44 please get Plasma 6.8 in the meantime ?

Thanks for considering it.

Discussion What would it take for Fedora to catch up with Windows regarding battery life on laptops?

29 Upvotes

As the title states, I want to use Fedora on my laptop but the battery life was about 20% lower than on windows. Gnome is a joy to use on mobile devices so I'm wondering if optimizing battery life is worth it on the devs end, since manufacturers optimize their chips for windows.

For reference I'm using a strix halo device(ROG Z13 flow), I've tried all the powertdp, tcl, and battery optimization tricks, I believe this is a pain point of fedora overall and would love to hear of some advances in this area.

Discussion Is Fedora 44 KDE limited on Display-resolution?

Thumbnail
gallery
48 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm currently seting up my new PC and are arranging the displays. Before we get to the question at hand:
MB: Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite Wifi 7
Graphic: AMD RX 9070 XT (16GB)
OS: Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma
Display: 1x Samsung LS34H55xG (center) , 2x BENQ GL2450H (left/right), 1x Acer XB280HK (top)

Now the issue:
The top monitor (Acer XB250HK) is not recognized by Fedora as such (seen as "DP-2"). Thus it is set to a resolution of 640x480. I had some issues with this monitor on my previous setup on win 10 several years back, too and put it aside, so I'm wondering if it just may be broken. But I just want to make sure it is not due to some limitations of Fedora KDE Plasma since the GNOME-Version of Fedora 44 already blocked the rearrangement of the displays in its software.

Thanks in advance ;-)
