is he taking a shot at prestigious cs universities? Personally I think this may be for the new grad or for an ambitious college student as most employed people have NDAs that restrict them from sharing employee code

Company Question Rejected from every SWE job to raising $500k to build the anti-Google. Here's my story.

1.6k Upvotes

In Jan of this year, I was a junior in college struggling to find internships for the summer. Every application I submitted was a shot in the dark...I had no internship the year before either so not landing one would be a bad look on my resume.

In Feb, I got severe neck spasms that had me bedridden for almost a month. I was skipping classes, without a job in a lot of pain feeling hopeless.

I remember searching up questions like "are chiropractors legit?" on Google and I kept getting answers from (obviously biased) chiropractic blogs telling me why I should visit a chiropractor.

I realized that today 16 dominant publishing companies dominate search, meaning answers no longer benefit a user but drive publishing companies money. Why should a few companies control our source of information when I wanted to hear from experiences from real people?

And then I turned to reddit..I found so many useful life experiences from real people like me. But the problem? There was so much content out there that it was so hard to find the consensus.

And that's when I realized I had to build the solution. I spun up a working prototype called lynksearch that cut through the SEO/Affiliate BS and generated crowd-sourced recommendations from Reddit, YouTube and TikTok.

While basically bedridden, I sent it to a few friends and they shared it to their friends and soon enough I had over 2k people using it. But here's the catch...I had no money and wellll... these things are expensive :(

Fast forward to today, I was recently accepted into a startup accelerator in SF and raised pre-seed funding to build my vision of a more democratized internet driven by the experiences of real people.

I know a lot of people on this subreddit have faced similar challenges but the moral of the story is to not give up, even when things seem impossible. Whether you're grinding through internship applications, dealing with health issues, or feeling stuck, sometimes those challenges are what push you toward the solution.

At the end of the day, build things in this world that solve real problems you are passionate about and the rest will align :)

Company Question Google opts for in-person interviews amid surge in AI-aided candidates

We’re about to see a fascinating experiment in the future of hiring. Meta is leaning into AI-assisted interviews, while Google is going the other way. In practice, that means candidates who cheat will flock to Meta and avoid Google. The bigger question is whether AI can actually do a better job than LeetCode at identifying talent. If it can, Google will eventually adapt. If not, Meta will.

Company Question Is Learning Backend Deeply Still Worth It in 2026?

Post image

Is Deep Backend Knowledge Still Worth It in the AI Era?

I'm a 3rd-year CS student exploring AI/ML deeply. I've built backend projects before, but honestly, I mostly focused on making things work without deeply understanding how backend systems work under the hood.

Since AI/ML is booming right now, am I wasting my time going deep into backend along focusing on AI/ML projects? How valuable is strong backend knowledge for internships and placements in today's AI-driven industry??

Rn I'm following Sriniously's Backend from First Principles playlist to strengthen my fundamentals. So thought to take some povs.

Company Question Interview Ended After Ten minutes

I had an interview with this British Quant firm, which I did at 7 am. Within ten minutes, guy was like, "Yeah we don't think there's a good fit. Ada and Python are not what we're looking for. Go away."

Damn. I should've never did the interview.

I’ve never even touched leetcode. My first round interview is in 5 days. What do I do 😭. My plan was to just grind the 150, hope I retain some of it, brush over some low level system design and call it a day

Company Question Jane Street QT or Stanford PhD in CS?

Basically, is it worth to skip JS for Stanford?

Both are great, and I was incredibly lucky to be in this position.

JS TC is going to be in the ballpark of 600k+ with known pros. The clear cons are (1) uncertainty with future career trajectory, (2) the TC shies away in the face of recent AI offers, (3) I don't lead any sort of luxurious lifestyles.

Stanford PhD definitely for the potential of it. For example, I should be able to quickly catch up with the small probability of landing an AI offer in the millions or starting my own company with valuable equity. I do not want to teach or go into academia at all in general, so I'll definitely be in the PhD game for the industry side of it, for which the Stanford PhD would arguably be the best PhD to do so.

I just want to brainstorm a bit. It may sound as if I'm favoring Stanford a bit, but the reason is truly JS would kind of be the default in this case, so I'm arguing against the default in a way to see if there is enough of a case to be made there.

EDIT: I think a lot of people are giving advice off of the short-term monetary considerations, so I should give this context which I didn't want to give because I didn't want to pass off as a troll or privileged (at least I dont think I benefited much from my family's success), but oh well. Basically, my family is doing very well, and they have some 6 real estates in New York alone, summing to over $30m in assets (the one we are living in is a pent house in upper east worth 10m, so, yea...). From my understanding, my dad gives my mom half a mill every year to just take care of things at home. Plus, through college, I have saved up $250k from various internships and personal investments and $150k through gifts from family, for a total of $400k in liquidable formats heading into the next stage of life. So, I really don't think the money from JS would meaningfully change my lifestyle in any meaningful way...

EDIT2: Plus Stanford PhD CS pays 70k+ now (summer is paid double), which is way higher than what I need to pay for myself.

EDIT3: ENDED UP WITH NEITHER 😭. Ended up taking a position at an AI lab. Let's see what happens from there 🙏🏻

Company Question Why is SpaceX Salary kind of low?

I see SpaceX pays their undergrad interns $30-$34 / hour and scaling up to $40/hour if completed phd. And looking at their full time roles, entry level around $120k-$140k.

Don’t get me wrong, very solid pay, but considering how SpaceX is arguably the leading space company doing incredibly cool and complex work, and based in HCOL areas like LA, SF, and Irvine, it runs noticeably below what comparable engineers make at FAANG and other tech companies.

Why don’t these engineers just go work somewhere else nearby that pays basically double? Is the stock comp making up for it? Is it the mission prestige of working on something cool? Is it to accelerate your early career learning? They also work long hours from what I hear, and I’d assume these engineers are pretty smart and could land offers elsewhere.

Also if anyone has worked there, would love to hear your good or bad experience.

Company Question AMA: Worked at Jane Street

Interned/worked for a few years. Left to another firm and now a professional gardener. This is meant to be a resource for anyone curious about the firm, including students and even current interns. Employment verified with mods.

Going to have to call it here. If I didn’t get to your question I might have already answered it elsewhere or just didn’t see it :(

Company Question Google has an internal Tinder and idk how to feel about it 💀

1.4k Upvotes

So my friend who's interning at Google just told me something wild. Apparently they have this internal dating app that's basically Tinder but exclusively for Google employees. They're calling it a "networking tool" but come on lmao.

Not gonna lie, kinda makes sense when you think about it. Like half the tech bros I know always talk about wanting to date someone "who understands the grind" and tech culture. Plus with those Google work perks, campus layout, and free food, they've basically created their own little city anyway.

The whole thing is cracking me up though. Imagine the profile bios being like "Looking for someone to debug my heart" or "Will trade leetcode solutions for love" 💀. Now I'm wondering if other big tech companies have something similar. Anyone's friends at Meta, Amazon, or Microsoft ever mention anything like this?

Not sure if this makes me want to grind harder for Google or run away screaming. At least now I know why they call it "Google Search" lmaooo.

Edit: Guys I'm hearing some DMs from people asking if this is why Google employees are called "Googlers". Please stop 😭

Looking at junior positions at company I interned at and came across this madness.

My question is, how long can a junior engineer actually stay a junior engineer?

Company Question Ex-FAANG, Tier One Quant Firm Intern, Can’t even get Google OA

I’ve applied to Google since my freshman year of college for the past 3 years, during that time I’ve interned twice at FAANG companies and gotten an internship at a T1 quant firm as a SWE, yet I’ve never even gotten an OA from Google. I deadass have no idea wtf I’m supposed to do to even get an interview.
