I’m a protester in the camping riots currently going on in Portugal, AMA

I want people to know about this, no, actually, I NEED people to know about this. I fear the news aren’t doing it for us, so I’m here. Ask away, ask anything about the protests, the reasons for them, the unconstitutional police brutality we were faced with. This is mainly to spread awareness about Portugal’s situation to the world and to let people know what’s actually going on here.

Reason they started, already stated in comment below: They started because Lisbon is right now the worst city to rent in in the EU, the prices are very abusive compared to the salaries. Minimum wage is 920€ after taxes and the government considers 2300€ a moderate rent. I don’t know how it is now in the USA but most people are earning values very close the the minimum wage. No one can afford that. And the government then tries to drop a new law on us that makes it easier to evict people and makes landlords be able to grab a bigger caution and more mints of rent before you even get in the house? Abusive, people went ballistic

Edit: reasoning

Ask away, because there’s a lot to it!! :))

I have terminal brain cancer, my dream job, and a young family. AMA

• Upvotes

In May, I developed focal seizures that were being caused by a brain tumor. I had the tumor removed in July, at which point I found out that it was a glioblastoma grade 4, which my doctor's said was the worst.

I've since gone through months of rehab to learn how to walk again and have had radiation and chemo. Now, I've started back at work, but I'm not sure if i should stay. I think now that I should just be spending time with my boys.

I broke 90% of my body and lived. AMA

• Upvotes

Hey my name is Victor Hernandez! Here is the story of how I broke 90% of my body. I was coming back from dropping my bestfriend(I call him my brother) at his home. While I was going home the time was about 5am. I was on the highway driving when suddenly, I lost consciousness, I wokeup later and I was dizzy, my vision blurry, I began screaming for help. I noticed my body was in the shape of an L. Except my upper body was on the passenger side and my lower body was still on the peddle. I then lost consciousness again. In total i lost consciousness about 5-6 times, and then spent 5 days in a coma. When I wokeup out my coma, I tried moving. Thats when I felt an intense pain. I started screaming at the top of my lungs and nurses rushed in that's when they told me I had a seizure behind the wheel and broke 90% of my body. I looked at my body and it was cut open from head to toe even on my stomach. I was told by the hospital it's more than a miracle I'm even alive, and even more of a miracle that I wasn't paralyzed from the neck below. This is what I broke. My whole entire right side of the body(my arm, leg, ankle, hip, femur, ribs, etc), and my left arm and shoulder. I was told I wouldn't be able to walk for a year. But I started taking my first steps 2 weeks after leaving the hospital. December 24th.

Ask me anything!

AMA: Grew up with affluent, financially responsible parents who lived well below their means

• Upvotes

I know this is probably the most “white bread” of AMAs, but I know this is certainly not the norm for a lot of families around the world, so I thought I’d take a moment to talk about my experience and how it’s shaped how I view finances today. For reference, my Dad owns a small/medium-sized business and my Mom is an architect.

I have a birth defect with less then 100 recorded cases globally ever. AMA

• Upvotes

I was born with an angiokeratoma circumscriptum on my foot that goes completely from the top side through to the bottom side of my foot. I have had 3 major surgeries on it, soon to have a fourth and it’s been predicted I’ll have over 50 on it before I die. Mine has never stopped progressing and my surgeons are now considering the option of partial amputation to stop its spread and maintain my ability to walk.

Jessica and I have been best friends for 10 years. She has a 4-year-old daughter who I help raise, and neither of us have any romantic feelings for the other. We’re married because it makes sense for us and our situation.
we have very “traditional roles” I handle the finances, and she takes care of the house.

AMA I am an amateur linguist, who is currently working on preserving a critically endangered language know as Mandeali

Hello friends, I am an amateur linguist. I do not have a professional degree, but I am a very serious hobbyist. I have taken on certain minor projects in the past, but this is my first large one. I am working on a critically endangered language known as Mandeali; it is a language from Himachal Pradesh(I will be working on other similar languages, collectively known as Pahadi languages). I would love to have an opportunity to discuss this project(It is going well, if I say so myself), and please ask me any questions related to language preservation, languages, and the native speakers, or really anything.

EDIT: Mandeali is definitely endangered, not critically.

I (22F) live in my ex boyfriend’s old room with his family. AMA

Yes, this is my actual living situation. And no, it’s not nearly as dramatic as it sounds. 💀
A few months ago, I moved out of my parents’ house and into my ex-boyfriend’s childhood bedroom. He moved away for law school, and I essentially took his place in the house.
So now I live with his mom and younger sister.
Here’s where it gets interesting:
My ex and I are still friends. His family and I are genuinely close. His mom is technically my landlord, his sister is my roommate, and I have an entirely different boyfriend.
And somehow? Nobody thinks this is weird anymore.
I pay rent, have my own space, and live a pretty normal life. Except whenever I explain my living situation to someone new, I realize how ridiculous it sounds.
I feel like there’s a million questions people could ask about this arrangement, so go ahead.
AMA. 😂

I judge whether people should be parents. AMA

Hello! I am a social worker in the child welfare field and for over a decade I have been a home study practitioner - someone trained to interview and assess people who are looking to be foster or adoptive parents, or who are kinship caregivers (people who already know the child) who want to obtain permanent guardianship of a child. In this role, I have to use charisma and personality to quickly earn the trust of strangers and convince them to reveal the darkest parts of their lives to me - and you’d be surprised at how often it seems like they’ve just been waiting for a chance to tell someone. I’ve had some insane conversations, uncovered some crazy information, and have even had to make reports on people who have divulged crimes to me. I think I have some interesting stories and insight to provide, so AMA!

My father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease ten years before I was born. AMA

My father was a very successful commercial/voice actor from the years of 1996-2011, and he got diagnosed in 1998. We’ve been living on SAG-Aftra’s disability payments as our only income since, as my mother is his full-time caretaker. For reference I am 18 years old.

Edit: For clarification, he got diagnosed at 30 years old.

I basically grew up in a funeral home. AMA

My father and uncle owned multiple funeral homrs during my childhood. I often went there with my father while he was working, so I spent a LOT of time there. I would play hide and seek with our dog behind the coffins (and sometimes in them if my dad wasn’t watching lol). And would pick which urn or casjet I’d like to be buried in. I also went to ”zombie jobs” as I liked to call it, with my father. We just basically nailed flower toppings on the casket. I made up the name because I used to joke that I could take on a zombie if they came out because I had a hammer.

I know this is not a usual childhood experience, so I wanted to give you an opportunity to ask questions about not only being in a funeral home as a child but also the ”inner workings” of it.

I got laid off yesterday with 550 other employees. We didn't get a meeting, an email or even a message over MS teams. We all lost access to our official accounts and got forcefully signed out of the computers. The HR stayed silent till the end of the day and then sent emails on our personal email IDs. AMA

Thank you all for asking questions. All of you are extremely nice and kind people. all the best for everyone going through the same.
