Help Me Find Racist incident at Mayfair around 3pm today

Today at around 2:50pm near the Food Court entrance to Mayfair mall, my wife (South Asian hijabi) was the subject of a racially motivated hate incident, where a woman and her husband in a black/grey pickup truck told her "take your mosque off, you dirty fucking indian" among other racial slurs.

A brave female bystander intervened and started telling off the woman before I got there and was able to intervene myself. It was only because myself and that bystander were white that the woman got scared and took off. If that bystander is on here (or someone here knows her), if she is comfortable reaching out to me via DM I would appreciate it; my wife and I would like to thank you directly. We pray that there are more people out there who have courage like you do - we will not forget what you did today.

Also, if the racist couple is on Reddit, please know that we forgive you. The Quran in 3:134. 8:70, 42:40, and 42:43 encourages Muslims to forgive those who have wronged us because it is better. We take that seriously. Just like other holy books and faiths do too. Despite your attempts to belittle her, we both had an amazing day, and as a result of your actions we have learned to be softer towards our community and each other. I hope one day your life gets better so that you do not feel the need to try to hurt people this way. And if anyone knows them, please show them this post.

Thanks everyone.

EDIT - didn’t think I’d have to mention this but my wife was born and raised here and her family immigrated over 40 years ago. This ultimately does not matter because the couple’s behaviour is inexcusable regardless of who it was towards - whether they’re a new immigrant or not. Anti-south Asian racism, and any type of racism, is reprehensible and disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourselves for justifying this kind of behaviour. Immigration is a good thing and we have much to learn from each other.

EDIT 2 - thank you to everyone that has posted something positive and kind. It’s always good to know that there are more people who choose love out there. I’ve decided to remove any reference to the license plate and will no longer be engaging in debates about Islam or racism. Whether one agrees with our faith or not such behaviour is unacceptable (and is unacceptable towards anyone by anyone).

Help Me Find Can we make a list of the non-lunatic candidates running in this year’s municipal election?

Serious question.

With the municipal election coming up, can we put together a list of candidates who are basically normal, competent people — regardless of whether they lean left, right or somewhere in the middle?

By “non-lunatic” I mean: no conspiracy-theory garbage, no culture-war obsession, no obvious extremist baggage, no pretending municipal council is Parliament, and preferably some actual understanding of what municipalities are responsible for.

I’d love to hear names, what they’re running for, and why you think they’re worth looking at.

Bonus points for links to their platform, website, interviews, council record, etc. so people can make up their own minds.

Help Me Find Cant seem to get hired for... anything

Long story short, I moved here back in December from Calgary and the job hunt has been PAINFUL. I think I've sent out at least 150 applications, cover letters, resumes, shaken hands with people at the locations, reapplied in person, and gone off on every job listing site I can think of. I even started the process to work through the military.

I'm 28, male, able bodied. I have experience in photography, restaurants, retail, management, computers, manual labour, assembly, and customer service. I have an N equivalent drivers license, and am willing to get certifications to acquire a job.

I would LIKE for it to be 20-25/hr but at this point I cant really be picky because I have bills to pay.

Live close to downtown Vic, any leads would be great.

We went on a whale watching tour today from San Juan Island, Washington and saw the brother and sister orcas that have been in the area. There appeared to be a wedding up on the ridge overlooking the harbor and it’s such a fun shot!

Help Me Find Mens haircut for under $60?

Hello friends,

Im looking for a new hairdresser.

Doesn’t need to be a barber, any solid hairdresser will do.

Ive been getting my hair cut at the mall, sometimes chatters, and ive ventured into some random barbers and have gotten some very lackluster haircuts.

Chatters does a good job but i cant justify 60 dollars for what i would consider a trim. Im being robbed!

Looking for something new that wont break the bank. $40 would be great. Im near hillside if that helps.

Thanks to anyone who has advice!

Update: went to avenue barbers in oak bay and paid $35 for a great hair cut. Said if i had any issues to come back and he’ll trim it up for free. Would recommend for sure!

Help Me Find Who can I report this ill deer to?

Hi, I recently spotted this sickly little guy in the PKOLS-Cordova Bay Area

He’s got a tumour bigger than a basket ball dangling off his front and, the eye on the side not pictured is swollen and popped out of his skull.

I want to know who to report this to so he won’t suffer.

My quick google search led to numbers not in service / ones that aren’t related to wild life.

EDIT: Called the RAPP line, hopefully they’ll send someone to put him out of his misery

Help Me Find As we once again wake up to the smell of TACO tariff threats, where is everyone getting their Canadian-sourced goods in the CRD?

I'm waking up today as motivated as ever to support local businesses and r/BuyCanadian. Wondering what some of your favourite Canadian-sourced goods are, and where do you find them?

A couple random ones from me: I've long switched from Adams peanut butter to Island Nut Roastery, which I buy at Market Garden, and it's great (I've also seen it at Quality Foods). We also now use Nellie's soap products, found at various stores including London Drugs.

Let's hear the latest on your favourite Canadian owned/made stuff, and where to pick it up :)

Take care everyone.

Help Me Find Loonies in Victoria?

Hi. Bit of a strange request here. My laundry room in my apartment building only takes loonies, and it’s kind of tough to find them. I know I can go to a bank to change a bill, but that requires the dollar bill which is one extra step. Is there any place that would just give cash back from a debit card?

I usually go to the grocery store for cash back, but recently have been getting push back and only a few loonies at a time….

EDIT: I DO NOT HAVE A BANK BRANCH HERE. I know I can go to the bank, with bills and exchange it for rolls of loonies. I am well aware. I am asking if there is a suitable alternative.

Thanks!

Help Me Find Can we please agree, as a community, to use alternatives to FB Marketplace?

I'm doing as much as I possibly can to stop supporting big tech in America. With every mind-boggling development, I feel more strongly that I want nothing to do with anything that might profit the American Oligarchy.

So, even though dropping my Prime account, Netflix, FB, de-Googling, etc., feels like a tiny chip off the American corporate stronghold, I can't use these services without feeling icky.

Can we agree as a community to start using VarageSale and Used Victoria again? I remember (years ago) when those were the go-to places to sell stuff.

Please, let's do what we can.

And also, I need to sell some nightstands and buy curtains.

Help Me Find Where is the nearest swamp?

I’m feeling the need to be in a swamp for swamp reasons. I’d accept a bog in a pinch, though a swamp would be preferred. The creepier the better.

Help Me Find Missed connection at Phillips Concert

Me: long blonde curly hair, covered in tattoos, wearing a grandmother-like polka dot dress, 28F 5 foot 2.

You: a dude. medium length straight blonde hair, piercings, not much taller than me, 20s-30s no facial hair, pale ish skin, and lanky. I would describe you as a small, non-threatening alt man.

We were waiting in the crowd for Angine de Poitrine and talking with 2 other guys, one was on mushrooms from Gabriola who was gushing about his orchard, the other guy was from Quebec and kept mentioning that it was his 1st year in vic. You like Primus. I like primus. You invited me in front of you when the mosh pit started and I felt your hands on my shoulders while I danced against you. Then the mosh pit squished us next to eachother and you said you swore you could hear Winonas Big Brown Beaver in one of the Angine de Poitrine songs.

I wanted to hang out with you but you went to get a drink and I left to buy more tickets.

Leaving the crowd I had sweat off most of my makeup, my face was burnt, and my hair was drenched so I felt too unattractive to ask you for your number, insta, or name.

The next time I saw you you were talking to a couple and I didnt want to intrude on that convo. Then I saw you again running to the portable restroom and I thought it would be so weird if I approached you at the toilets.

I like that we both like strange music and I was hoping we could play or listen to music together.

I was also hoping we could dance some more, you had such a chill vibe.

I FEEL SO CREEPY POSTING THIS but im actually so pissed I didnt even get your name. Dm me if this post described our interaction

Help Me Find Women’s only gym in Victoria?

Does anyone know if there’s any women’s only gyms in Victoria? The demand is so incredibly high, and I’ve been looking for one everywhere with no avail. If you know about one/ are planning to open one please DM me, I know so many women that are looking for a women’s only gym in sannich / Victoria.

Edit:

Looks like I should clarify what I’m asking for lol.

I’m asking about if there IS a women’s only gym in Victoria, not on if there’s a demand for women’s only gyms, nor did I ask about the disagreement with the idea of women only gyms.

I’m not sure if it’s because I worded my question oddly or just an overall rise in a lack of reading comprehension, but please just focus on the question.

Help Me Find Does anyone know if the doggo is OK?

This happened on Wednesday 14th, at around 11:30 AM on Blanshard. Driver of white truck sped up as he was turning and dog flew out the window. Vehicles stopped and multiple pedestrians tried to help the dog. Does anyone know if the dog was OK and reunited with the owner (various vehicles including my wife honked at them and tried to get their attention, but they didn’t stop)

Help Me Find Jobless and sad

Is it just me or is it incredibly hard to find a job here in Victoria. I’ve applied to so many places online using indeed LinkedIn and websites (I’m aware indeed usually gets no responses but I have no other options atp) and I have yet been able to find a job. No one seems to be hiring and even for an entry level job with minimum wage there is so much competition. I’ve never experienced this else where so I’m wondering if this is a Victoria thing? Or possibly I could just be the problem I suppose…

Sincerely, there are a lot of open spots. More than I've seen while booking. Please consider being there for Canadian Blood Services this week.

There are lots of buses that stop near that area and they have free parking. The buses that go to Uptown are #95, 26, 30, 31, 32, 47, 48, 53, 61, 65, 70, 71, 72, 75.

If you do go, make sure to drink a large glass of water and have some significant food before going. You don't want to give him too much of a good deal! 😉

If you decide to drop in, you may have to wait a tiny bit longer because they will not turn you away but still slot you in when they have available time. But they'd rather be over busy than quiet.🤘

Best wishes everyone and happy Spring 💐

Help Me Find Alternatives to Jones BBQ?

I recently went and it was not the best. Dry and very salty. Does anyone know of any other places that sell smoked brisket? I know there are sometimes people that sell it on FB marketplace, but I haven’t been able to find one. Wasn’t sure if there were any word of mouth BBQers.

Help Me Find LF gamer friends

Hey, I'm 41/F, and looking for some local friends to game with. I've been separated for about a year and a half and miss having a player 2. I like cozy games like ACNH, Sims 4, etc but mostly play WoW. I also love Baldur's Gate and would love to have someone to couch co-op BG3 with (but I only have it on PC and don't have a PS5).

I have kids and am retraining to work in health care right now, and outside of gaming I like to read, knit, and garden. I have and love cats, and I also love horses and dogs and bunnies. Looking for friends that are left leaning like me. DM me if you're interested and maybe we can exchange discord handles or something.

Help Me Find Good places for a big steak?

What are some good places for a big steak dinner? It’s a birthday dinner, but we’re also kinda poor so… maybe not the most expensive place around lol 😅

Somewhere downtown or at least not too far out of the area would be the best since we don’t have a car. Thanks!

Edit: to clarify on price, I just mean no crazy expensive, hundreds of dollars for a wagyu kinda place, should’ve been more clear there. Just one person is getting a steak. The $70 range is fine, under would be great, a little over could be worth it.

Help Me Find Jobs for teens

Hello all! Long time lurker, first time poster. I’m wondering if anyone knows of any part time jobs my 17 year old could apply for that isn’t McDonald’s or fast food places. There are factors as to why those wouldn’t be great for them. They’ve applied to Walmart and Thriftys but the systems screened them out without even a phone call. They’re hard working, compassionate, and reliable but unless you know someone in this town, it’s hard to get in anywhere.

I know we should tailor their resume to the job they’re applying for but at this point there’s no jobs available. Are there any smaller places looking to hire? They’re a work horse and able to do a lot.

Thank you for your help! Sorry if I did this wrong, I rarely post on Reddit, mostly read and comment lol.

ETA - lowkey racist comments not welcome. We’re all people trying to make it, let’s not make it harder for anyone.

Help Me Find Arriving in Victoria International Airport at Midnight

Hi all, due to my poor planning I will be arriving in Victoria at midnight. I can only move into my housing during the day. As such, I will be without a roof till then. Getting a hotel isn't really an option because my budget is pretty tight.

I saw some an article online where people managed to live in the airport with airport security's permission. However, I am unable to call ahead of time as I am not in North America. Even then, it is not guaranteed that I will be able to sleep in the airport.

Any recommendation will be really helpful :)

Help Me Find Budget restraunt suggestions for birthday

Hey people of Victoria,

It's my husband's birthday on Sunday and I want to take him out somewhere but we're really struggling financially (and every other way) after a big move.

Before you suggest a picnic and or eating at home - please note Im disabled and can't carry too much, don't drive and we have children so staying in isn't ideal.

I really want to make his day special and let him know I care - without spending a whole bunch because frankly I don't have a whole bunch. Believe me, I would if I could.

Any cute date ideas downtown? Hole in the walls we can grab really yummy food and sit by the water with? Something like that? I dunno. Help me out.

Life has been so hard lately and Im really depressed so if you could not be mean about me not being able to afford much that would be really swell.

Thanks all.

Help Me Find One my goals for this summer is to eat at as many little league or sport field hot food concession stands as possible, so who knows of some good ones?

One of my fondest childhood memories is getting an order of fries from the concession stand after a game back when I played baseball at National Little League here in Vic (I used to put mustard on my fries so my teammates wouldn't steal them but then it backfired as its actually delicious and so my teammates stole em' even more), so I have this weird goal to try and eat at as many concession stands as possible this summer (I will probably document it for content too) so I'm just wondering if you fine folks know of any little leagues or sport fields or whatever that still have concessions stands running that serve hot food?

I'm pretty sure National still has one, though I haven't been back there in decades, and I think the ball field over by Tillicum has one too, but other than that I don't know of any other one's personally, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Edit: Thanks for all the awesome suggestions! Seems I'm not the only one who appreciates a good concession stand.
