Do you talk to strangers?

It's not a common thing to do here. I go to local events, bars, live music, parks and attempt to start conversations and people are disinterested and/or barely engage.

I'm a friendly and easy person to talk to. I've travelled to many other countries and lived in other cities in Canada and this has never been an issue for me.

I also have plenty of friends and this is not about that.

It's about the sense that people are open and interested in each other. That's what places with real community feel like.

Maybe it's because the city is isolated and not that many new people pass through.

Either way, it feels like a closed social environment. Which is unfortunate, because there's so much else to like about this city.

Boosters

At the wholesale club, just watched two native women, stuffed their backpacks with at least $1000 worth of meat and then walk right out, security guard never even question them, and then I paid $350 for my groceries, starting to think I’m the stupid one

Victoria Avenue Might Not Reopen This Year. Four Days Before the Deadline, We’re Just Hearing About It?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Victoria Avenue was supposed to reopen October 31. That’s Saturday. After months of construction, we’re now hearing it might not reopen until 2027, which seems like fairly important information to introduce four days before the deadline. Especially considering the underground infrastructure problem was discovered in late June.

Late June. We’ve gone through an entire summer, most of autumn and a municipal election since then. Somewhere along the way, somebody must have looked at the remaining work, looked at the calendar and realized those two things weren’t getting along. I’d be interested to know when that happened, because the businesses along Victoria Avenue have been planning their lives around a deadline that may have stopped being realistic quite some time ago.

The city entrusted the approximately $18.4-million reconstruction to Finn Way General Contractor Inc., a company with a history worth questioning. There have been court findings involving construction contracts in 2015 and 2024, and far more seriously, a 2023 workplace safety conviction following the death of an employee at its Thunder Bay facility, resulting in a $135,000 fine. Yet the city also awarded Finn Way the approximately $36-million indoor turf facility contract.

That’s roughly $54 million in municipal construction contracts. At what point does a contractor’s track record actually influence the city’s decision to keep handing it enormous projects?

Of course, construction surprises happen. Digging beneath an old downtown means encountering infrastructure installed by people who probably considered electricity a fairly exciting development. But that’s why an $18.4-million project employs engineers, consultants and professional project managers. Colliers Project Leaders is managing the redevelopment, and the city has its own responsibilities. Somewhere in that collection of expertise, you’d hope there’s somebody responsible for noticing when the construction schedule stops resembling reality.

I’ve seen construction in Toronto where you can drive past a giant hole in the road on your way to work, then drive past the same spot on your way home and there’s somebody standing on fresh pavement directing traffic like the hole never existed. Meanwhile, in Thunder Bay, we’ve spent months watching Victoria Avenue get reconstructed, and now we’re discussing whether the street might be ready sometime next year. Obviously, not every construction job is the same, but the difference in pace is difficult to ignore.

Unfortunately its the businesses along Victoria Avenue that experience the difference between a construction schedule and an actual calendar. They’ve spent months operating behind construction fencing, trying to attract customers while paying rent, ordering inventory, scheduling employees and preparing for Christmas. A small business can’t tell its landlord that an unexpected underground issue has pushed this month’s rent into the second quarter of 2027. It’s remarkable how accommodating a calendar becomes when somebody else is paying for the inconvenience.

This is the same city that spends an enormous amount of time discussing downtown revitalization. We want entrepreneurs, investment and occupied storefronts. Yet the people who’ve already invested downtown are left wondering how much longer they’ll be operating around a construction site. There’s something deeply backward about trying to attract new businesses while making life increasingly difficult for the ones that are already there.

Which makes the timing of Monday’s municipal election worth examining. Brian Hamilton was re-elected in McKellar Ward after publicly championing the Victoria Avenue redevelopment. He’s also familiar with downtown business, which makes the situation particularly relevant to him. Two days after the election, questions about the reopening deadline were circulating. Was the possibility of a delay known before election day? When was Hamilton informed? Did the election influence the timing of any communication? I don’t know, but I’d certainly be interested in seeing the timeline. The election managed to happen exactly when it was supposed to. The street might not be so fortunate.

I want this redevelopment to succeed. I want Victoria Avenue reopened and downtown Fort William thriving. But after all the planning, spending and promises, businesses deserve to know whether the deadline is still realistic, when that changed and what happens next.

For a city so committed to revitalizing downtown, Thunder Bay has developed a remarkable talent for making survival the first requirement for its independent businesses.

Thunder Bay Has 54,000 Reasons to Complain and Apparently Only 946 Votes to Spare

I swear, you could announce tomorrow that Thunder Bay was being sold to Manitoba and half the city would have a 600-word opinion about it before lunch. There’d be arguments about property taxes, crime, whether Winnipeg was getting the better end of the deal, and at least one guy blaming the bike lanes. But ask people to spend a few minutes deciding who actually runs the place, and suddenly we’re looking at 40.85% voter turnout.

Seriously, what the fuck?

Look at everything going on right now. Not just in Thunder Bay, but everywhere. The cost of living is ridiculous, housing is becoming a luxury, neighbourhoods are struggling, and the political situation around the world resembles something you’d expect to find in the rejected scripts for a particularly depressing science fiction movie. People are angry, worried, frustrated, and increasingly convinced that nobody in charge has a clue what they’re doing.

You’d think this would be the perfect environment for people to become more politically involved. Instead, we’ve somehow managed to turn politics into one of our favourite spectator sports, except most of us can’t be bothered to participate when the opportunity comes around.

Before somebody starts explaining that municipal politics is boring, I know. Nobody is confusing a city council meeting with the Super Bowl. But consider how much of your actual life is affected by municipal decisions. The street you live on, the taxes you pay, the businesses that open or close, the development happening in your neighbourhood. A politician in Ottawa might spend six months arguing about something you’ll never notice. Your city council can approve something across the street that you’ll be looking at every morning for the next twenty years.

Now consider this. More than 54,000 eligible voters in Thunder Bay didn’t vote yesterday. The difference between the two leading mayoral candidates was just 946 votes.
Nine hundred and forty-six.

That’s not some enormous, impossible-to-comprehend political divide. That’s a decent crowd at a concert. There are probably more people in Thunder Bay who own three copies of Rumours than the number of votes separating the two leading candidates for mayor.

I’m not suggesting those 54,000 people would have voted the same way or changed the result. Nobody knows that. But it’s pretty incredible that an election affecting an entire city can come down to such a relatively small margin while the majority of eligible voters sit it out.

We have a new mayor, five first-time councillors, and a former councillor returning. Most of the people I voted for won, so I’m not upset about the results. I genuinely hope this council does well, because regardless of who you supported, we all have to live with the decisions they make.

What bothers me is the disconnect between how passionately we discuss everything that’s wrong and how little interest we collectively show when there’s an opportunity to influence what happens next.

We live in an age where you can broadcast your opinion about absolutely anything to hundreds or thousands of people without leaving your couch. You can argue with strangers in other countries about politicians you’ve never met. You can spend an entire evening furious about something that happened in Washington, Ottawa, or halfway around the planet.

But the people making decisions about the pothole outside your house? That’s where we lose interest.

I don’t expect everybody to follow every council meeting or memorize the municipal budget. Christ, I don’t think most councillors would particularly enjoy that either.

But with everything happening in the world, and everything happening right here in Thunder Bay, I genuinely thought more people would want a say in where we’re heading. Instead, nearly six out of ten eligible voters didn’t bother.

For a city with this many opinions, that’s a hell of a lot of silence.

Almost just got hit by 2 separate vehicles back to back at this intersection. I'm going straight through (blue arrow), 2 geniuses cut right in front of me trying to turn left (yellow arrows) HEY, GENIUSES! Straight gets the right of way before your left turn 😑 I go, guy cuts me off and I honk, the idiot behind him does the SAME THING and came SO fucking close to hitting me. Never had to honk at 2 people for my life 2 seconds apart before. Can we learn how fucking right of way works? Getting a dash cam asap. Wish I had this on video so bad. Had to rant. Drivers in this city are so shit.

Anyone taken the CELPIP test in Thunder Bay?

Hey guys, has anyone taken their CELPIP test here in TBay? How was your experience, and how were your scores?

I’ve heard people say that test centres in Winnipeg are a bit more lenient compared to Toronto, but I’m not sure how true that is 😂

Just wondering how it is here in Thunder Bay, since I’d rather not travel to another city if I don’t have to lol.

Would love to hear your experiences!

Reviews for Dr. Siren?

As title says, how was your experience with Dr. Siren for infertility/IVF?
First appointment is approaching and I’m filled with emotions and questions. I have only a slim idea on what to expect.

How long did the whole process last, I know it’ll be different for everyone but still curious.

Were you given options or pushed towards something (IVF, IUI)?

Does he look for the reason for fertility issues or is he just.. pardon the word choice, but a baby making machine.

If anyone is willing to share their experience I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Edit Oct 28-
Thank you everyone for your replies! Feeling slightly more at ease, and mostly just excited about starting the process now. ❤️

Really McKellar Ward?!

What the hell people?! Brian Hamilton again?! Thunder Bay really looked at Brian Hamilton and said, “You know what this city needs? Another term of that.” 💀 Some mistakes you learn from. Others you apparently re-elect.

Fine expanded perlite

Is there a store in town that sells fine expanded perlite (0-3mm)? Particle size has to be smaller than 3mm. Everywhere I have checked only sells perlite larger than this.

Thanks
