Text and translation help Am I dumb, or is this translated in a totally unnecessary way?

Post image
154 Upvotes

For context, I was learning Swedish a few years back, and I remember some of it, but I definitely couldn't hold a conversation or translate on the spot. I do still get emails from the learning services I signed up for, however. I personally would translate this as "vem ringde?" And I feel like all those filler words are just over complicating it, but maybe I'm under complicating it. What do you guys think?

Edit: guys I would not personally ask "who phoned?", I was just asking about the translation because that is the email I received. Ive gotta loads of helpful advice, but some people seem adamant that I'm dumb for asking who phoned even though I DIDN'T ask that thank you. Special thank you to all the extremely helpful replies and the full clarifications ❤❤❤❤

SOLVED IN COMMENTS, THANK YOU :)

Hello, I think this might be Swedish. My translator app can't read it because of the cursive writing. But I typed Kisse into Google, and it said it is Swedish for pussycat?
(edit - people in the comments are saying it is Kirre instead)
I can't read the rest to type in to Google, as I don't know the language and the handwriting is, well, messy. Can anyone tell me what this says, please? Thank you.

Text and translation help I'm sorry for your loss

I'm attending the funeral of my husband's grandfather who lives in Sweden. I've only met most of the family once previously. What would be the best way for me to tell the family "I'm sorry for your loss?" Also a pronunciation guide would be extremely helpful! Tack!

Text and translation help How to say, "I'm sorry?" when you didn't quite hear someone.

In English, when you don't fully understand what someone has said or why, the proper response is "I'm sorry?" It's kind of the same in German, you would say "Bitte?" Like in Inglorious Basterds, Landa says "Let me see your foot." She says, "Bitte?"

I suppose another translation is, "I beg your pardon?" How would you say that?

Text and translation help Trying To Make A Discord Server For My Swede Girlfriend!

Hi! I’m trying to make a discord server for my girlfriend and I to chat in together, and I thought it’d be cute if I named the channels in her native language! I’d like to do my best with the extremely limited Swedish I know but I’m way too limited to actually do it on my own.

I’ve tried looking up some of the words online but I realized that some of them way seem awkward/formal or be plain incorrect for the context I’m using them in.

It’d be a great help if I could have the following words/phrases translated in whichever way you believe it best suiting!

Chatting, Images, Art, Writing, Translations, Language Questions, Complaining, Gaming, Streaming, (+ whatever else you think may be useful that I may’ve overlooked!)

Text and translation help Help with a Swedish idiom

Hello! I have a couple questions about an idiom/saying I found on Wikipedia, "ta på sängen".

Firstly, is this a common saying? Would it be understood if you said it in casual conversation with a random native speaker?

Secondly, it seems like it is used similarly to the English "blindsided". If you wanted to say "He blindsided you" in Swedish, using this idiom, how would that look? And what would the literal translation of that sentence back into English be?

Thank you for your help!

Text and translation help Never Gonna Give You Up translation

I'm trying to translate Never Gonna Give You Up in Swedish and I would need help to check the grammar. On everything but especially on this point: it's alright to say "kommer + verb" instead of "kommer att + verb", right?

I've found two translations on youtube but they stay very true to the original words despite the rythm. My goal is to keep the same number of syllables as much as I can, even if it means changing the lyrics a bit (ex: spola, vänstra...). If you have suggestions to make some parts better, I'd love to hear it!

We're no strangers to love
Vi känner kärlek väl
You know the rules and so do I
Du vet reglarna, jag också
A full commitment's what I'm thinkin' of
Engagemang är vad jag tänker på
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
Du får inte det av någon annan man

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Jag vill bara säga hur jag mår
Gotta make you understand
Måste få dig att förstå

Never gonna give you up
Kommer aldrig ge dig upp
Never gonna let you down
Kommer aldrig svika dig
Never gonna run around
Kommer aldrig vänstra dig
And desert you
Och spola dig
Never gonna make you cry
Du kommer aldrig gråta
Never gonna say goodbye
Jag kommer aldrig lämna
Never gonna tell a lie
Kommer aldrig dra en vals
And hurt you
Och såra dig

We've known each other for so long
Vi har länge känt varandra
Your heart's been aching, but you're too shy to say it
Ditt hjärta gör ont, men du är blyg och ta tyst
Inside, we both know what's been goin' on
Inom, vet vi båda vad som har hänt
We know the game, and we're gonna play it
Vi vet leken och vi ska spela

And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Och om du fråga hur jag känns
Don't tell me you're too blind to see
Säg inte du kan inte se

The rest is repetitions. Thank you in advance!

Text and translation help 2 “modal” verbs?

Hej allihopa, i asked my native friend about the structure of this sentence. I find it hard to adjust to without directly translating: “could you could…” for “skulle du kunna”… etc.

I’d like to get more examples of sentences where this structure is used; I understand it’s something I just need to get used to, but I need to know what’s the difference between just saying “kunna du”?

Text and translation help Help Identify Abbreviations from 1790s Husförhörslängder

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi all, I came across these two abbreviations while researching in the 1700s Visnums parish records. I have never seen them before, and I can't seem to find abbreviations that matches. These are on the far left side of the page, in the column where titles like "drang" or "pig" are usually listed. Does anyone with a better understanding and/or recognition of gothic swedish writing have any ideas? Thank you in advance!
