Resource request/tip I made a simple en/ett lookup + practice app for iPhone

I know there are already other en/ett apps and websites, but I made this (originally for myself) because I wanted something really quick and simple. Basically open it, type a word and see a big "en" or "ett" sign immediately.

It started as a little web app I wrote years ago, and I recently turned it into an iPhone app. And I also added a game where you just keep choosing en or ett for different words, which is actually surprisingly fun and quite a nice way of practising them!

Everything works fully offline. It is a paid app, but it's a one-time purchase (NO subscription, NO in-app purchases etc).

BUT I have some App Store promo codes, so if anyone here wants one just leave a comment and I'll send a link by DM so you can get it for free (and it will stay on your phone free forever - as if you purchased it).

App Store link:

https://apps.apple.com/app/ettenapp/id6811630391

(👉 again, if you wanna try it just ASK for a free link in the comments and I'll DM you one!)

/Disclaimer: I did use AI coding agents when making the iOS version. The original app/lookup was written by me in Javascript though, and the Swedish word data itself is from LEXIN./

-----
EDIT:

Thanks everyone for the interest! Really appreciate it - and please feel free to tell any friends who might find the app useful too!

I'm leaving 5 more promo codes here, first come, first served:

https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=34R6EW3JL7Y6
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=4FL4TPR46FR7
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=PEY3TANT6Y6Y
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=LFY7M3YJ3PLA
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=PHJKRN76HEMT

If they're all gone by the time you see this, please consider buying the app - it's just 49kr (or US$3.99), with no subscriptions or in-app purchases.

Lycka till!

Resource request/tip I made free Swedish crosswords for learners (A0–B2)

Post image
221 Upvotes

Hej allihopa!

As a native Swedish speaker, solving bildkryss is one of my favorite ways to pick up new words. Bildkryss are a distinctly Swedish style of crosswords, where the clues sit in boxes inside the grid and one of them is a picture.

I wanted learners to be able to use crosswords the same way, so I made a set for people who are earlier on in their Swedish: https://bildkryss.se/learn-swedish :) There are five puzzles each for levels A0-B2. The lower levels have English clues and small grids, and from B1 and onward the clues are in Swedish - mainly synonyms and cloze words. When you finish a puzzle you get a list of its words.

Although the layouts are generated by a program, the clues are handwritten. I am a little bit unsure about whether the synonyms I used in higher levels are at the right, um.. level, so any feedback there is very welcome (or any feedback at all, for that matter).

The site works on all screen sizes but I'd definitely recommend using a desktop or tablet.

To be clear: this is fully free, no ads or anything. I'm just happy if people want to give it a try. Stort tack to anyone who does!

Resource request/tip A free Pokémon-style Swedish game I made for my partner

I spent the last five months building a game to help my partner learn Swedish and I thought other people might find it useful too.

It's called Björkgatan ("Birch Street"). It is a cozy life simulation inspired by the old Game Boy Pokémon games but Instead of catching Pokémon, you catch Swedish words.

As you explore the town, you level up your words by practicing them through SFI lessons and spaced repetition. The goal isn't just to memorize vocabulary. You move to Sweden, attend SFI, go to work, shop for groceries, visit the park, buy a cat/dog, get children and gradually learn the language by living everyday life in the game.

It's still a free alpha and very much a work in progress. I'd genuinely love feedback from anyone learning Swedish, what works, what doesn't, and what you'd like to see added.

I'll put the download links in the first comment.
Thanks for reading! I'm happy to answer any questions.

Resource request/tip Made a free app for SFI C/D prep, sharing here since it's Swedish-learning specific

Been building this for a while and sub might find it useful. It's called SFI prov (SFI - Svenska för invandrare), a free app for practicing the SFI C and D national test material. Reading, listening, vocab, grammar drills, a couple of mini-games for vocab retention, and an AI-based writing/speaking grader so you get feedback instead of just guessing if your answer was right.

Available on both the App Store and Google Play, just search "SFI prov." No paywall or registration required. Happy to answer questions if anyone's prepping for their SFI C or D test and wants to know if it'd help.

Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.sverigefokus.sfi

Resource request/tip Any good Swedish dubs for shows?

I obviously know that there’s a lot of children shows with a Swedish dub but I wanted the genre of shows that I already watch and like. I like glee, pretty little liars, any tlc reality show and anime. I also know Disney Channel has a lot of dubs that I’m down to watch to! I’m open to other options of course!

Resource request/tip Does Google translate work okay with Swedish for very simple sentences?

I'm writing something that has a character who's Swedish, and while he mostly speaks English and his internal thoughts are "translated" there are a few lines that have popped up that are not regular phrases I can easily look up.

I'm going to post it on AO3 so it doesn't need to be the best it could be, but I know how good GT works varies wildly by language.

Resource request/tip For those struggling to get an intuitive feel for en/ett, I made an app.

Hej allihopa!

I hope it's ok to post this here. Seeking feedback on an app I'm working on.

My wife, who's Italian, has been struggling to remember which words are en and which are ett.

Her teachers always said "there are no rules" and "you just have to learn the word with its article."

That didn't seem to be true.

So I decided to have a go at it and build a super-specific app for en/ett. It's available for download and still under development and that's why I'm posting to bring in feedback from more learners.

I've relied on help from SFI teachers and Swedish learners to take the app where it is today.

So let me know your honest and brutal opinion on this.

Attached some screenshots for reference.

Features

  • Discover common, uncommon and rare nouns and add them to your learning list.
  • Practice words to learn their gender as well as the rules of thumb.
  • Supports both article, definite form and plural.
  • Uses spaced repetition (but which language learning app doesn't today... 😄)
  • Time challenge to build intuition.
  • Lets you build lists of nouns to share and practice with friends.
  • Handy "rules of thumb" reference which tracks your rule-learning progress.
  • Built-in dictionary to track the nouns you've mastered.
  • Statistics to see your progress.
  • Streaks to keep the habit alive.
  • Homescreen and lock screen widgets to learn the rules at a glance.
  • Noun of the Day notifications.
  • Earn badges as you progress and unlock facts about Sweden.
  • Available in Swedish and English.
  • Sounds effects and music (both can be turned off) because... why not?

4,500+ nouns in the database for paying users. 100 for the free version.

Resource request/tip Uninstalling Duolingo, there must be better ways to learn Swedish.

I feel like these apps are not really getting me anywhere. I find the best way is to speak with a Swede, but in social settings its hard because they switch to English all the time...

Is there an app speaking with a random swede? Like actually talking, not texting.

Resource request/tip How do I learn swedish ?

Hello Sweddit !

I'm unfortunately, for now, not fluent in your language and I'd like to change that. I'm french but english is not an issue so... How should I proceed ?

I stumbled on Duolingo but it's heavy on the AI and I'd prefer to avoid that, are there local solutions I'm not aware of for a complete beginner ?

Thanks !

Resource request/tip An app to learn oregelbundna verb(irregular verbs)

I'm building an app to learn Swedish irregular verbs.

  • You have to enter a correct verb form on a card.
  • There are no lessons - you can practice as many verbs as you want, set a daily goal verb number and notification time.
  • You can also practice on a set of verbs, for example the essential ones or a specific pattern.
  • The interface and verb translations exist in different languages.

I’d really appreciate some feedback, especially from people who are learning Swedish as a second language:

  1. Would you consider using something like this?
  2. Does the interface feel intuitive?
  3. Most importantly: what would make you stop using it after a few days?

I am learning Swedish myself and would like to make if a bit easier for you guys as well!

Resource request/tip If you struggle taking your Swedish to the next level, I might've something for you 🇸🇪

Hey everyone,

I’ve been struggling for a while to find something in-between Duolingo and the “real” stuff like books, podcasts, or shows. Duolingo is fun, but it doesn’t really make me think in sentences. On the other hand, diving straight into books or conversations felt overwhelming.

So I started journaling in my target language. Just writing about my day, my thoughts, what happened.

It has been a game changer for me. Taking the effort of thinking about my day in Swedish sort of created these neural links somehow, and I've made tremendous improvements on my daily life just by journaling, because actually… most conversations in real life are about your daily life anyway 😂

I thought others might benefit from this too, so I put together a small mobile app called Journalingo
(Play Store & Apple Store)

You'll have to dive into the empty page, it's scary at first, but it's a great exercise, and then it'll give you corrections + feedback. Right now it’s in a testing phase (so yeah, expect some bugs 😂), but I’d be super grateful for any feedback from people who try it.

There is also a small section about your progress, using a system of XP points, and when there are new words in the correction from the journal, it is saved and you'll be able to review them in the "Vocabulary" page, sort of like flash cards.

Having a journal require some commitment, like 10 minutes a day to write, and also review corrections, but I really think it’s worth it if you’re serious about progressing.

I’m also working on adding small games and challenges along the way. If you have any idea again, I'd love to hear it :)

I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, or how you’d like to see it grow. Maybe it can become a tool that helps more of us bridge that gap between “Duolingo” and “real-world use.”

Thanks for reading 🙏

Resource request/tip Built a Swedish learning tool for my parents to help them with SFI

I made a tool for learning Finnish, mostly to fix my own problem: every time I started a new language, I had to rebuild my word list from zero. But for Swedish, I did something different. I'm fluent in Swedish, so I sat down and chose every word for levels A1 to B1 myself, by hand — no shortcuts. I also decided the order, so each new word builds on words you already know, instead of a random list.

The reason: my parents wanted to learn Swedish, and everything out there was either just word cards with no order, or a course where you still have to build your own word list as you go. I wanted something that actually guides you step by step. It also has a reader where you tap any word to see its meaning, and saved words go straight into a review system so you actually remember them. There's also a real dictionary (not just a translator) that shows word forms, like plural or past tense.

It's free right now, no paywall, I want honest feedback more than money at this stage. You can try it, just write in comments is you want it, there is also a link in my profile, and you can add it to your phone straight from the browser, no app store needed.

Would love to know if this is how people would actually want to learn Swedish, especially if you've taught it to family or beginners before. It is free.

Resource request/tip A1 beginner Learning Swedish at Folksuniversitetet, looking for resources/tips to study solo as a supplement my classes. I have someone I can speak Swedish with, which is great help, but I don't want to only be learning during the course lessons and assigned homework.

Obviously speaking the language and also watching/listening to Swedish media is very important, but since I am still at the very beginning I would also like some resources that might help me train my grammar and vocabulary that I can study alone in between lessons. Currently we're using Rivstart A1A2 Textbook and Övningsbok and it's been good so far.

But my goal is C1 and I want to get in the habit of studying independently of the courses I'm taking, so if you have any tips/resources you would recommend to help me master the basics quicker so I can progress faster, that would be great.

Resource request/tip Svenska learners: tips, please!

I´m a Spanish native speaker and I am learning Swedish at a B2 level. The fact is that I feel that I´m stuck at this level and I do not feel any progress even if I study every day. I know that my Swedish is not perfect and I know I´m capable to master the language at a C2 level (I also want to master it to complete my studies in that country). When I speak to my friends in Swedish I feel that most of my expressions are too generic like if I an AI chatbot with no personality, and unable to acquire the slang words they use.
Any advices?

Resource request/tip Struggling with Verb Order any recommendations?

I’ve been trying to learn Swedish for about a year and started really pushing hard in June spending an hour ish per day. I’m A2 early B1 level but my grammar is just awful. I mess up verb order all the time or mess up infinitive, past, present and supine forms. I text with my Swedish friend every day so I’m practicing often but I’m feeling so discouraged that I’m not retaining/developing the automaticity for the verb order. I know the rules! But my brain just doesn’t implement them when I’m just chatting casually with my friend.

Was there anything that really helped the sentence structure to click for you? I had hoped that reading out loud might help with pattern recognition but I’ve read ~1000 minutes (I keep a log) in the last two months and I’m not picking up the pattern from that or writing sentences out.

Would love any insight or advice. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Resource request/tip Favorite Youtube Channels, TV Shows, Musicians etc. to learn swedish from?

Hej hej,

I just started with swedisch, but I want to get used to hearing swedisch and maybe learn from it too. Right now its still really hard for me to seperate words when I hear people talk, but I guess it will change some day. Currently I am watching "The swedish Family" with subtitles and I really love their positive and uplifting mood. I prefer content about the outdoors, gardening or lifestyle, but I am also open to other topics.

In my Swedish class, https://svtplay.se was brought to my attention. There are a bunch of free shows you can watch in swedish. Subtitles aren’t always 1:1 with what is being said but its been a great immersion resource for me. Hope this helps someone discover this great resource.

Resource request/tip A friend built a Swedish news reader that adapts articles to your CEFR level (A1–C2)

A friend of mine has been building a Swedish learning side project, thedaily-nomad.com, and I've been using it for a while now.

It pulls daily news from SVT Nyheter and rewrites each article to match your CEFR level (A1–C2). Nice if you want to keep up with local news and practice the language at the same time. You can also tap any word for a translation, and have articles read aloud.

Disclaimer: I'm ofc biased since it's my friend's project, but it's been helping me a lot, so I wanted to share.
